Salvete omnes!

Hodie est pridie Kalendas Decembris; haec dies comitialis est.

"After uttering this prediction, which proved to be as true as it was
reassuring, he took the field and, keeping his movements as secret as
possible, fixed his camp in the neighbourhood of Caudium. From there
he sent ten soldiers disguised as shepherds to Calatia, where he
understood that the Roman consuls were encamped, with instructions to
pasture some cattle in different directions near the Roman outposts.
When they fell in with any foraging parties they were all to tell the
same story, and say that the Samnite legions were in Apulia investing
Luceria with their whole force and that its capture was imminent. This
rumour had purposely been spread before and had already reached the
ears of the Romans; the captured shepherds confirmed their belief in
it, especially as their statements all tallied. There was no doubt but
that the Romans would assist the Lucerians for the sake of protecting
their allies and preventing the whole of Apulia from being intimidated
by the Samnites into open revolt. The only matter for consideration
was what route they would take. There were two roads leading to
Luceria; one along the Adriatic coast through open country, the longer
one of the two but so much the safer; the other and shorter one
through the Caudine Forks. This is the character of the spot; there
are two passes, deep, narrow, with wooded hills on each side, and a
continuous chain of mountains extends from one to the other. Between
them lies a watered grassy plain through the middle of which the road
goes. Before you reach the plain you have to pass through the first
defile and either return by the same path by which you entered or, if
you go on, you must make your way out by a still narrower and more
difficult pass at the other end.

The Roman column descended into this plain from the first defile with
its overhanging cliffs, and marched straight through to the other
pass. They found it blocked by a huge barricade of felled trees with
great masses of rock piled against them. No sooner did they become
aware of the enemy's stratagem than his outposts showed themselves on
the heights above the pass. A hasty retreat was made, and they
proceeded to retrace their steps by the way they had come when they
discovered that this pass also had its own barricade and armed men on
the heights above. Then without any order being given they called a
halt. Their senses were dazed and stupefied and a strange numbness
seized their limbs. Each gazed at his neighbour, thinking him more in
possession of his senses and judgment than himself. For a long time
they stood silent and motionless, then they saw the consuls' tents
being set up and some of the men getting their entrenching tools
ready. Though they knew that in their desperate and hopeless plight it
would be ridiculous for them to fortify the ground on which they stood
still, not to make matters worse by any fault of their own they set to
work without waiting for orders and entrenched their camp with its
rampart close to the water. While they were thus engaged the enemy
showered taunts and insults upon them, and they themselves in bitter
mockery jeered at their own fruitless labour. The consuls were too
much depressed and unnerved even to summon a council of war, for there
was no place for either counsel or help, but the staff-officers and
tribunes gathered round them, and the men with their faces turned
towards their tents sought from their leaders a succour which the gods
themselves could hardly render them." - Livy, History of Rome 9.2

Today is the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle. Tradition has it
that Andrew was martyred by crucifixion; when he was shown the cross
upon which he was to be nailed he hesitated, saying that he was
unworthy to be crucified on an instrument identical to that of the Son
of God. To humor him, his cross was tilted to form an "X", and he was
then crucified on it. The X-shaped "St. Andrew's Cross" is on the
flag of many nations, most significantly those of England and
Scotland, of which country he is the patron saint.

At a time when few people could write in Europe, contracts and
agrrements were often signed with a simple "mark", that is, an "X", in
honor of the saint. To confirm the agreement, the signer would then
kiss the X and swear to honor his agreement by St. Andrew. This has
led to the phrase "sealed with a kiss" and to the identification of an
"x" on a letter with a kiss.

"I asked Tom if countries always apologized when they had done wrong,
and he says, 'Yes; the little ones does.'" - Mark Twain, American
humorist, born on November 30, 1835, in "Tom Sawyer Abroad"

"It is a fine thing to be honest but it is also very important to be
right." - Sir Winston Churchill, British prime minister, born on
November 30, 1874

From June 11th 2004 to December 22nd 2004 I was a member of the Boni.
The date of 22nd December was when it was announced formally on the
Main List that the Boni had ceased to function. I remain friends with

Salvete omnes.

Although unable to vote for either of these two men, being patrician,
I would still like to offer them my support and best wishes for the
campaign. Both are exceptionally dedicated to making Nova Roma succeed
and it is marvellous to see them both standing at the same time for
the same office.

Agrippa has obviously worked very hard on the new NR coin project and
has also invested a lot of time, effort and money in that, as well as
in setting up his store of NR goods. Paulinus has constantly sought to
improve his province and NR in general and has done so despite a
horrendously busy schedule of work and volunteer commitments.

I wish them the very best of good fortune in the election.

Just to provide a small and mild countering viewpoint...

Quintus Fabius Maximus has threatened to blow up my home - the boat on
which I live. The FBI, my local police department, and the Los Angeles
police department have requested and received copies of the email
containing his direct threat, and have them on file. (Incidentally,
anyone else threatened by him - as I understand others have been - are
welcome to contact me for the case reference numbers.)

This is, perhaps, not quite what anyone would call a criminal record -
but it is, in my opinion, a direct illustration of his moral qualities.
Since a Censor is supposed to be the highest example of the Roman
Virtues - the guiding light of *morality* for all to follow - I have a
hard time seeing how bomb threats are supposed to demonstrate that
unswerving rectitude.

In addition, anyone with even the most basic skill of using a search
engine will find a very interesting absence of support for his claim of
being a Hollywood producer and screen writer. "Sales manager" for a
studio, certainly. IMDB (the Internet Movie DataBase, pretty much the
canonical reference for anyone in the business) lists exactly one hit
for a Stephen Phenow -

``
Past Films & Videos (1 title) Year Budget
Dalton's Reward (short) - Assistant Camera 2005 $20K
''

So much for his adherence to the truth, then.

So, is *this* - leaving aside the matter of his lack of competence in
other matters - what we want as a model of the Virtues? Quirites, I
leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Let's be more precise, shall we? Your rants about "liberals" - when you
don't really know what the word means and can't define it - were
accurately noted to be just that, rants without substance. *You* were
not called any 'nasty things' - at least that I can recall.

(Incidentally, 'definitions' like "liberals are bad, that's why all bad
things are due to liberals" would only cause people to laugh. I'm just
letting you know so you can avoid it.)

> My complaints were exactly the same as yours.

No, Gaia's complaint actually had substance and structure, and stated a
problem in resolvable terms (that isn't to say that it was easily
resolvable.) Yours were, and are, rants - without substance, without
basis, and - unfortunately - without end.

> I drop this issue now. vale.

You would have been much better off to drop it *before* gracing this
forum with yet another non-Roma-related, inappropriate, off-topic post.
I would be the last person here to claim that you don't have the right
to do so... but I reserve the right to expose these things for what they
are when you do.

Salve Gaia,

I feel your pain. I have two daugthers and face this problem constantly. We beat the system by augmenting to it: You might want to consider the Hopkins Talent Search to challenge your child academically. They offer on-lime courses at affordable rates. They will require him to take the SAT test to see where he is academically. Also, search for a good martial arts academy that doesn't only teach martial arts. My students get a good dose of Oriental and Roman philosophy, culture & history to go along with the physical requirements. Although academies like mine are rare, they do exist elswhere. You may want to browse through my webpage for information on how to choose a good one that will motivate your child (male or female) to achieve with excellence any endeavor they may choose to engage in (he or she will need to have an interest in martial arts in order for the magic to work - and a good teacher so choose carefully :-)

Ave Scaevola,

It does my heart good when we can respond to each other in a measured manner.
Disagreement need not ever lead to disagreeableness.

As for your words on my poetry; I've always said that a poet is little
more than a scribbler of words. Without readers, the words just use
up ink and paper ( or electrons ;-)

I write because I must. I am grateful that you read.

I wrote this little poem 4 1/2 years ago to start off my first
self-published book.

A Starting Point

The long trail ends, homestead's in sight;
Hunter smiles, journey is done.
Strides neath the trees, enters the town;
Lengthens his pace, comes to his house.

Puts wealth of hunt in cooling hut;
The huntsman grey, then enters door.
Puts up his bow, upon its pegs;
Removes his cloak, and other gear.

Embrace for wife, and scritch for cat;
Hot water bath and toothsome meal;
A mug of mead and yawning stretch;
Sits at his desk, takes up the pen.

Constitution of Nova Roma Sections II.A. 4 and IV.A.1.b
Lex Fabia de Censu 31 May 2003
Edictum Censoris CFBQ XXXIV 4 July 2005

Purpose and Results

The Officina Census conducted a census of all current and former
members of Nova Roma from 4 July until 23 Oct. 2005. On file with the
censors are the records of approximately 4332 applicants for
membership. Among these are 520 files of applicants who were never
approved for membership. Another 193 former members have officially
renounced their citizenship. By the conclusion of the census, 1021
former applicants and/or members were determined to have
"disappeared." Three former cives are listed as deceased. The focus
of the census was then placed on the remaining 2595 members to
determine who among them remained as Active cives and who were to be
reclassified under recent leges as Inactive socii.

Among Active members are four categories of cives:
o Assidui who contributed annual dues to Nova Roma in 2005
o Cives who voted in the elections of December 2004
o Probationary Cives who joined after 1 January 2005 and had
not yet completed their probationary period prior to 23
October 2005.
o Capite Censi who responded to the Officina Census or to the
propraetor/propraetrix of their respective provincia.

Inactive members consist of Socii who did not meet any of the above
criteria for Active membership. In addition those listed as
"Disappeared" were Socii who could not be reached by any means of
communication and who were found to have invalid email addresses,
postal addresses, and telephone numbers.

At the completion of Census 2005 it was determined that Nova Roma has
a total of 662 full citizens and an additional 184 probationary
citizens, for a potential of 846 Active members. Inactive Socii
amounted to 1749 members, including 501 Socii who warrant being
reclassified with a status of "Disappeared."

Cives: Socii: Other Total
Assidui Capite Censi Prob. Inactive Disappeared
238 424 184 1248 501 1737 4332

From among all 4332 applications for membership that Nova Roma has
received, 3906 have been granted citizenship at one time or another.
Of these only 662 members remain full cives. That is, Nova Roma has
lost 83% of its membership. At the end of summer 2000, Nova Roma had
an "active" membership of 850 cives. Essentially Nova Roma today,
with 846 assidui, capiti censi, and provisional cives, has failed to
grow over the past five years.

Progress of the Census

Periodic counts were made as the census was being conducted. The
figures below reflect membership response to announcements and email
campaigns conducted by the Officina Census. While the census was
being conducted additional applications were being processed as other
probationary cives entered into full citizenship. A number of those
531 socii who were originally found to have invalid email addresses
were contacted by propraetores through alternate means of
communication, and thus their total number declined.

Organization of the Census

Censor K. Fabius Buteo Quintilianus established a new Officina Census
on 28 June 2005. He named M. Moravius Piscinus Horatianus as Scriba
Censoris Census Primus to head the office composed of scribae M.
Antonius Biachius, A. Apollonius Cordus, and C. Fabius Buteo
Modianus. Additional support was provided by Q. Cassius Calvus, M.
Octavius Germanicus and M. Hortensia Maior. Additional assistance
was extended to the Officina Census by propraetores M'. Constantinus
Serapio for Italia, M. Flavius Philippus Conservatus in Germania, M.
Lucretius Agricola in Asia Orientalis, and M. Curiatius Complutensis
for Hispania and Mexico. Each of the scribae was assigned provinciae
so that each oversaw the registration of approximately the same
number of potential cives. The scribae were instructed to work with
the propraetores of their assigned provinciae in locating and
registering cives. Responsibility for updating the files of cives
was assigned to A. Apollonius Cordus and M. Moravius Piscinus
Horatianus. Letters received directly by the Officina Census from
cives were responded to by M. Moravius Piscinus Horatianus. All of
the scribae responded to letters sent indirectly through propraetores.

Conduct of the Census

Announcements of the census were posted to the Nova Roma Mainpage,
Mainlist and Announcements Board. Scriba Census Primus M. Moravius
Piscinus contacted each of the propraetores, followed up by the other
scribae of Officina Census. Propraetores then posted the
announcements of the census to provincial email lists. The
announcement of the census was also passed on by matres/patres
familias.

The Officina Census sent out mass mailings to all potential cives
requesting that they register in the census. Care was taken to
ensure that all mailings were sent on a dies comitalis to avoid
religious proscriptions. The first mailing, consisting of 2115
emails, was sent on 17 July 2005, dies comitialis a. d. XVI Kal.
Sextilis A. U. C. MMDCCLVIII. This first mailing was sent in
English, followed up by selective mailings in Italian and German,
beginning on 27 July, and also in Spanish to members located in
Hispania, Mexico, and Argentina. Translations of the census letter
were provided by M'. Constantinus Serapio, M. Flavius Philippus
Conservatus, and M. Curiatius Complutensis, respectively. In some
provinciae these mailings were also followed up by individual
mailings from propraetores. Afterwards the Officina Census received
546 bounced emails from erroneous addresses. From mid-July through
mid-September the scribae and propraetores continued in their efforts
to reach individual members via email, postal services, telephone,
and by personal contacts as well. A second mass mailing was then
sent out on 17-18 Sept. to these same socii who had not yet
registered with the census as cives. This mailing was sent to 1991
socii with 308 emails subsequently bouncing. Again the mailing was
followed up by additional mailings translated into Italian, Spanish,
and German. The scribae censoris of the Officina Census and some
propraetores again followed up these emails with phone calls, postal
mailings, and personal contacts in an attempt to reach all members.
The two mass mailings were the minimum efforts needed to meet the
requirements of conducting the census under Nova Roma leges. The
Officina Census took it upon itself to make additional efforts in
different regions and provinciae when it was suspected that a special
problem might exist. The translated emails, alternate mailing
schedules, networking, and alternate means of communication were all
part of the additional efforts that aimed to contact all possible
members and have them register as cives.

Each month of the census consisted of four phases: contacting cives
and propraetores, collecting information, updating files and
disseminating information back to propraetores when needed. From the
4,417 letters sent out by the Officina Census, the scribae received
and responded to 952 letters, answering inquiries and taking
complaints. The scribae of the Officina Census updated 2586 files
with current information on street addresses, email addresses, phone
numbers, and status. Removed initially from the provincial lists of
active members were 152 files due to duplications, resignations, or
for other problems. From among the socii 88 were reclassified as
having Disappeared. These were former members in whose cases all
attempts to contact them proved that they did not have valid
addresses or phone numbers recorded with Nova Roma, and those whose
contact information had already been found missing in previous
censuses. Under recent Nova Roman leges distinguishing Active
members as cives, and all others being then recorded as socii, 1750
files were reclassified as Inactive. Under the previous leges any
civis who failed to respond to the census had been removed from the
list of citizens. The new requirements that distinguish between
Active Cives and Inactive Socii under Nova Roma leges therefore
resulted in a 68% reduction in the membership that previously
appeared on the public webpages of Nova Roma provinciae.

In the course of conducting the census various aspects of Nova Roma
were revealed. Recent laws that distinguish different categories
among cives and socii make possible the use of the census to analyze
Nova Roma's membership and to identify strengths and weaknesses in
the organization. Further discussion of these observations are
available in the Addenda to the Census 2005 Report. From these
observations the Officina Census forwards the following
recommendations:

o That the census be conducted at the beginning of the year rather
than in summer months, so that its completion would correspond with
21 April, Dies Natalis Urbis. A practical reason for this
recommendation is that during the summer months many cives are away
either on vacations or on school holidays and thus do not have access
to their computers, so that response to the census is generally poor.
A second reason is to tie the census into historical religious and
political themes. The census could be conducted beginning with the
dies comitiales in the latter part of January, tied then with the
purification rites of February, and then with the religious rites
historically performed by Republican consules during March.
Reporting of the results of the census would be due prior to 21 April
and their announcement could made over into a renewal of Nova Roma.
Playing on such themes might better solicit citizen participation in
the census and would return the census to its religious context.

o That the census codes used in the file system be coordinated with
the status codes. Currently when the status of a member is changed,
the census code remains the same. This causes a complication in
extracting information. Limiting which census codes could be used in
the different categories of membership status would create a more
flexible informational system and better allow censores to access
information. Much of the time-consuming work of the census would be
eliminated as the coding system would then allow easier and more
accurate extraction of information from the files. The Officina
Census would then have more time available to locate and correspond
with members, better encouraging participation with the census, while
the tedious task of counting was better handled through the filing
system.

o That the nature of provinciae be reconsidered and their
organization be more fully integrated into the overall organizational
structure of Nova Roma.

o That a new provincia be organized for the Caribbean region in order
to encourage further recruitment there. Interest has already been
expressed by some cives in this region. Membership levels suggest
that other very small provinciae could be formed in Chile, Ecuador,
and possibly Peru.

o That a review be conducted of provinciae Venedia and Sarmatia to
determine whether these remain viable.

o That a review be conducted of the provinciae of North America to
delineate new boundaries that will create more efficient provinciae
based on current clusters of population rather than on geographical
areas. As the provinciae of this region are presently constituted,
the distances involved make administration and communication
impractical. Difficulties with recruitment and retention of
membership exist throughout Nova Roma, but the size of the provinciae
of North America work against a practical solution for these
problems.

o That performance of an individual provincia be assessed in the
three areas of recruitment of new members, retention of members, and
participation of cives as assidui. See the Addenda to the Census
2005 Report for further discussion.

o That special recognition be given to propraetores/propraetrices M.
Curiatius Complutensis, M'. Constantinus Serapio, T. Iulius Sabinus,
Arnamentia Moravia Aurelia, M. Flavius Philippus Conservatus and Sal.
Sempronia Graccha Volentia for their exceptional cooperation with the
Officina Census in this effort.

o That special recognition be given to civis M. Lucretius Agricola
for his work in filling in the role of a propraetor for the difficult
provincia of Asia Orientalis and contributing to its exceeding our
goals.

THE ANNUAL PROVINCIAL REPORT OF PANNONIA PROVINCIA
Letter to the Senate and People of Nova Roma

CN. CORNELIVS LENTVLVS: PROPRAETOR PANNONIAE: CONSVLIBVS: PRAETORIBVS: TRIBVNIS PLEBIS: SENATVI POPVLOQVE NOVO ROMANO: SALVTEM:

Cn. Cornelius Lentulus, Propraetor of Pannonia, salutes the Consuls, the Praetors, the Tribunes of the Plebs, the Senate and the People of Nova Roma.

Esteemed Consuls, Fr. Apulus and C. Laenas, and Honoured Senators,

I. 1) As the Governor of Your Provincia in Pannonia, I have the duty to make the annual report of the provincia. It is a great pleasure to me, because I can demonstrate to You, Patres Conscripti, that Pannonia has developed so much, and in a good way since we started its reorganization in this April. We have a whale of things to do still, but the grounds of the Romanization are already done with this year -- and this is the most important event in the life of our Pannonia till now.

2) Pannonia Provincia was restored by the decision of the Senate and People of Nova Roma on November 15th 2752 A.U.C. (1999) during the consulate of L. Cornelius Sulla and Decius Iunius Palladius. The province includes the two regions of Pannonia Inferior (Slovakia) and Pannonia Superior (Hungary), in those times goverened by separate Legates. Since March 15th 2754 A.U.C. (2001) there was established a Civitas Bohemiae (Czech Republic) associated with the province and governed by Praefectus Civitatum. The first Propraetor was Alexander Iulius Caesar Probus Macedonicus (01 Jan 2000 - 27 Feb 2002), the second C. Marcius Coriolanus (27 Feb 2002 - 12 Mar 2004).
In this period our provincia developed almost only in Slovakia, though the number of the citizens was about 30-35, but these citizens were mostly just passive.

II. 1) After the resignation of Propraetor C. Marcius, Pannonia did not have governor and all its activity let up. This miserable situation ended on April 1st of this year when I was appointed as Propraetor of Pannonia by You. I had some friends with whom I had founded a little group called "Consociatio Hungarica Ad Rem Romanam Reficiundam" and with some of these friends I started in on reorganizing the provincia. Unfortunately from these old 30-35 cititens I couldn't find anyone who would responded to my insistently sent messages, only Alexander Iulius Caesar Probus Macedonicus ex-senator, ex-proparetor; C. Marcius Coriolanus ex-propraetor; and finally, Tib. Petrus Bellangus citizen. Alexander Probus however resigned from Nova Roma and disapeared. C. Marcius said he wanted to be only a passive citizen for the time being. Only Tiberius Petrus Bellangus helped me from the old citizens.

2) From the new citizens who came with me into Nova Roma I appointed C. Laelia Laeta as Scriba Propraetoris 1st Rank Official. She is a very helpful and dedicated citizen but does not send messages frequently to the main mailinglist of Nova Roma. With my friends the number of the citizens was augmented to 40 or so.

3) Then I apponted Tib. Petrus Bellangus as my Scriba Propraetoris who controls Slovakia and the Czech Republic in general. I myself am Hungarian and with Laelia Laeta I personally control Hungary. I appointed Sex. Lucilius Tutor as Scriba Propraetoris to control the Czech Republic under the guidance of Tib. Petrus Bellangus as his superior. Sex. Lucilius send messages to the main list from time to time and he is good man, but doesn't do may things for this reorganization. The long distance between Hungary and the Czech Republic impedes me to do much for the Romanization of that area. And, being the only active citizen in the Czech Republic, I was constrained to appoint him.

4) As You could see, Patres Conscripti, what kind of administration I have created in Pannonia -- even if it's temporary because we have many of prospective citizens who did not still register themselves in Nova Roma but during our annual programs they expressed their intention to join in, and these future citizens are involved in our real life activities, so I know there are some of them who will be appointed as Scriba, Legate, Procurator and so on -- I come to the point of the activities, events and developments of the year.

III. 1) Firstly, we have established a provincial mailinglist I invite You with pleasure to visit it and join in if they are interested:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NR_Pannonia/

This became a quite active mailinglist, we have several discussion in Hungarian, but with the Czech Sex. Lucilius Tutor and with other non-Hungarian members of the list we discuss in English. Some Latin appears from time to time. This mailinglist is the main base of the communication with Slovakian and the Czech regions, but we, in Hungary, keep the contact personally or by phone as usual.

2) The other important step of the initial times was the creation of an official Pannonian Nova Roma Website. It's done, too: (Please visit:)

http://nrpannonia.iweb.hu

This website is also temporary, we want to have a www...org site, with a much more beautiful design. The English translation of the site is under way.

3) These are, Esteemed Consuls and Patres Conscripti, the first steps in the developing the virtual base of the Nova Roman Pannonia Province. Let the report continue now with the real life events.

IV. 1) Before I was apponted as Propraetor I had had a good relationship with Italia Provincia, especially with Praetor M. Iulius Perusianus, then Aedilis Curulis; and the Propraetor of Italia, Aedilis Plebis M' Constantinus Serapio who informed me of everything important about Nova Roma and last year I met M. Iulius in Rome when we discussed about the restoration of Pannonia. When I was appointed Propraetor, on these grounds I started the work with my friends to bring to life our province. We met every second week as usual and planned our future projects. We sought a reenactment group we can grow the number of the citizens with and get help in our work. And in the beginning of the summer, we found it: the "Gladius" Roman and Sarmata Historical Reenactment Association, leaded Mr. János Tokai, with his unofficial Roman name (because he is not citizen yet) M. Caecilius Metellus.

2) Nova Roma Pannonia and the Gladius Association worked out a good project of an Roman Summer Camp in which people who aren't memebers of neither of the organizations can participate by fee. We rent a camp in Szolnok city, Hungary, and buit a Roman "castrum" after ancient sources. Tib. Fabricius, one of the Gladius Association, made Roman armours (lorica segmentata) from cartboard, but with such an artifice that You cannot notice they are from cardboard when You look the photos on our website! The Szolnok Roman Camp was taken from 17 July to 23 July.
I can state it was really fantastic and had a great success.
As the Propraetor of the Provincia I opened the program with an Latin speach, which was interpreted by M. Caecilius Metellus, tribunus militaris of his reenactor cardboard-legion, the XXIth Rapax.
We performanced some battles, gladiatorial combats, Roman dinners. Outsider children who participated by fee have gained a military training conducted by centurio Fabricius and myself. There was held a Mithras ritual (look at the photo) and a prayer to Iuppiter offerred by me. The regional television channel and the local press were present in this event which was very important for our promotion. Please look at these very nice pictures made in the Szolnok Roman Camp, our first demonstration:

We will place little descriptions under the photos: it's under way. In the pictures you can see me in the white toga, centurio Fabricius, the old and the young Metellus, my scribe Laelia Laeta, my lictor Laelius, the legionar children, and some barbarians too. So welcome in the living New Pannonia!

2) After this Szolnok Roman Camp, Pannonia Provincia together with the Gladius Association have participated in the biggest Roman Reenactment Festival in Europe: the Ludi Savarienses, Savaria-Games, on 26-27-28 August, held in the ancient Roman Savaria, now the Hungarian city Szombathely.
We preparate ourselves very well to this demonstration. We have made throwaways about Nova Roma and Pannonia Provincia to introduce ourselves in this grandiose festival and to gain more new members.
You can see pictures from the Ludi Savarienses with Nova Roma Pannonia here: (Please have a look at these gorgeous photos:)

In this event we met some Italian Nova Romans and I have talked long with Q. Fabius Allectus, now Quaestor Candidate. This was the first Inter-Pannonian meeting too, because there was present Tib. Petrus Bellangus my Scriba for the Slovakian Region and his girlfriend. So: with Italian, Hungarian and Slovakian Nova Romans it was a little second "Conventus Novae Romae" of Central Europe, while the real Conventus ran in Rome.
In 27 August we celebrated our provincial feast by a great ritual to the all gods and godess of Rome giving thanks for the Roman Rebirth and prayin them in order to help us in the restoration of Rome.

3) In the beginning of September we have participated in another program of Szolnok city on the fundation day of the city. We have held a little military and civil clothes demonstration and a passage of arms and distributed our Nova Roman throwaways. Some photos made but not placed on the website still.

4) Since I have returned to the university I have made efforts to gain new members from the Latin Department (where I graduate student) and from the whole university. Some of our citizens frequent this university so we can usually meet. We hold every second week a little meeting and from time to time a little scientific session where one of us give a lecture on a Roman subject and then we discuss about. I have started to organize an Egressus Club according to the Go Roman Project, but this is in a very inchoative stage for the time being. I have to make contact with the Go Roman staff and so on.

5) We are making a website too, where the authentic way of drapping the toga will be explained with photos and descriptions. This will be a great help for all the reenactors because it will be very detailed and accurate with more than 30 picture of each step of the drapping.

5) These were our main activities this year, Patres Conscripti, I hope this demonstrates we worked hardly any have met with great success. There are however -- and I am fully aware of this -- many things to do and I can promise only more and more hard work. We have good relationship with Italia Provincia, Dacia Provincia and Venedia Provincia. The only problem in our province that the most of our citizens can't speak English and so cannot represent themselves on the main mailinglist of Nova Roma: I look for people with English knowledge. We also have the intention to register Nova Roma Pannonia as a legal person in Hungary to be able to gain subventions from the State.

V. Esteemed Consul Fr. Apulus and C. Popillius; Praetor M. Iulius and L. Arminius; Honoured Senators, I have arrived to the end of the Annual Report of Pannonia Provincia. I hope You are content with this Report but if You have any question or doubt, I am ready to answer to You as I am the servant of the Senate and the People of the New Rome, promagistrate of the Republic. Please forgive me for my bad English: I would gladly write this Report in Latin, the language of Rome, but our times in which we do live don't favour the language of our ancestors: we have the duty to change these times. Therefore I pray the gods for protect our Republic and expand the Romanitas through all the world as well as in our Pannonia, wishing that it become the pride of Nova Roma someday.

Salvete, Quirites.

You may remember me from a while back, when I was involved in the
Sodalitas Egressus.

I had fallen on some bad luck with computer problems and personal
affairs, and as such took a leave of absence from NR, but I am back
and am ready to serve.

I just wanted to say hello again to everyone, old and new!

Yours,

Titus Aurelius Ursus

Subject: Many Thanks
Pompeia Minucia Tiberia Quiritibus S.P.D.

First of all, I would like to thank those who have expressed wishes of
support and endorsement on my behalf; I very much appreciate your
confidence and I am honoured by your trust.

We have some very good candidates, but I think they deserve a separate
post with some detailed elaboration on my part, regarding their
attributes.

Secondly, I wish to extend a public thank you to the Censores and
their respective Cohortes for their collective hard work in conducting
this Census. Alot of communication, phone, email, documentation of
data was involved... And the governors, in the process, were kept
abreast of what was required of them in their provinciae. And the
cohors were available for any questions.

As one who does a certain amount of statistical maintenance, I can
appreciate their efforts very much at what can be at times a laborious
and well, 'nitpicky' task.

I am sure the data will be an invaluable tool in the determination of
the needs of the republic.

Bene valete
