Salvete omnes!

Hodie est pridie Kalendas Sextilis; haec dies comitialis est.

"Why is it forbidden to mention or to inquire after or to call by name
that deity, whether it be male or female, whose especial province it
is to preserve and watch over Rome? This prohibition they connect with
a superstition and relate that Valerius Soranus came to an evil end
because he revealed the name.

Is it because, as certain Roman writers have recorded, there are
certain evocations and enchantments affecting the gods, by which the
Romans also believed that certain gods had been called forth from
their enemies, and had come to dwell among themselves, and they were
afraid of having this same thing done to them by others? Accordingly,
as the Tyrians are said to have put chains upon their images, and
certain other peoples are said to demand sureties when they send forth
their images for bathing or for some other rite of purification, so
the Romans believed that not to mention and not to know the name of a
god was the safest and surest way of shielding him.

Or as Homer has written,

'Earth is yet common to all,'

so that mankind should reverence and honour all the gods, since they
possess the earth in common, even so did the Romans of early times
conceal the identity of the god who was the guardian of their safety,
since they desired that not only this god, but all the gods should be
honoured by the citizens?" - Plutarch, "The Roman Questions" 61

Dear Triarius,
My last name MARQUARDT; I've heard rumors in my family that we are decedents of certain high profile people; one that the name is Latin, another that it is from holy blood or blue blood.
Not to take up too much of your time, do you know anything about the lineage to the last name?

I support Nova Roma particularly through purchasing the 2760 A.U.C. Calendar (what does A.U.C. stand for?)
If N.R. sold shirts I'd buy. The shirts that I would hope to see are, among others, a cotton t-shirt, and a semi-casual, front button up, short sleeve, collar, and front left pocket shirt; both extra large size in my case.
Maybe in a red, gold paisley, or "bandana" print. Don't be alarmed with the "bandana" print... it is very nice... I got one made by RON CHERESKIN. I'd describe the pattern more like "carved stone border."
I've also named my construction company Roma Construction Company.
Valle Optime,
Robin Marquardt

Here is one of my family's lines that I have researched to William the

Conqueror (my 34th Great-Grandfather. ..it's pretty clear from here on

down). Yes, it DOES include mythology.

Valid or Invalid? I welcome any critique from our historians, as any

additions, deletions, or corrections will improve the quality of my

Ab Urbe Condita means "from the founding of the city." The Roman calendar
takes its point of origin as the founding of the city of Rome in 753 BCE.

First, on family lines, specially the one you have attached to your
letter, do not give it too much importance. Such lines seem, as the
one beneath, very fanciful, and published to have us all here get
some relax reading it.

Second, and on a serious level this time, on William the Conqueror,
he is simply the 6th direct descendant of the born in 854 Hrolf,
later called Rollon, who had been banned from Norway and became the
1st duke of Normandy, France.

Third, the origin of your family name, MARQUARDT.

This name comes from Germany, and is made from two Old German parts :
MARK-, which designed the horse, and HARD-, which has roughly the
same meaning as in modern English (severe, harsh, strong, vigorous).
The word MARK- or perhaps MARCOS come probably from the Celts, and
adopted by the Germans.

You still find many MARQUARDT in Germany.

So, your name does not come from Latin.

Vale Robine,

P. Memmius Albucius

-M. Hortensia T. Iulio spd;
It wonderful to read what progress has been done on the
Magna Mater Project, my congratulations Sabine, for all your follow
through & hard work.
I notice and so has Aquila that there seems to be very
little interest not only in this splendid project but the great
temple for the gods in Rome. But there is tons for a stamp.
Are North Americans so uninterested in partipating in
European activities that we see 0 to 1 interest in real life
buildings & 9 interest in a postage stamp? I really wonder & find it
troubling.
I hope I am wrong.

Yes, MMP has its course and development. You know that because you
participated active to this work. I can't say MMP has a continuous
and uniform rise. We depend very much of donations and it seems this
year is not in conformity with our expectations. But I hope to see
this situation in other colours until the end of the year.

In my opinion the problem is that in each year new ideas for various
projects arise. In this time we are not able to finish what we
started in the past. In order to succeed the key is to do all is
possible to continue with what we already started and in which we
already invested. Wasting our energy in many directions is the same
for me with an army fighting on two or more fronts. Even if
the "soldiers" are determinate and courageous, finally the logistics
will fail.

Salve!

This America is interested in both stamps and temples, but which one is
more readily accomplished? It's hard to get excited over long term
projects especially when the project isn't in the same hemisphere.

btw, I've donated to the MMP, and I will continue to donate when I have
the spare funds.
