You know what happened on your end, and Livia is just trying to clear up some misconceptions.

<<Quintilianus did not ignore me?>>

You missed the deadline. I don't think he was expecting any more declarations of candidacy after the deadline, but I won't discuss this any further with you. I will let Quintilianus do his own explaining.

<<The senior consul has already spoken, in his veto. That's pretty clear.>>

His veto has nothing to do with your candidacy, as Livia explained. I think you might need to read her post again. Here it is:

Salvete omnes,
the comments by C. Valeria Pulchra below are an example of the confusion
that may ensue when one reads the main list only superficially. This is a
high-traffic list, so if one doesn't have hours each day to read carefully
each post it's very easy to lose track of what's happening and form
unprecise ideas.

I'm travelling these days, so I barely had time to read all the posts, but I
feel that I need to clarify some things, because obviously nobody bothered
to so far.

This is what Valeria Pulchra wrote: "Piscinus moved to announce his
candidacy for office on a holy day, and an edict was put fourth to
officially announce Piscinus' candidacy. Cato then moved to do the same, and
as a result Cato and Sulla were both Moderated on the Main list by Maior".

Well this is absolutely incorrect.

What happened is that consul Quintilianus issued a call for candidates for
the current elections. The call contained a deadline and some requirements
for the candidates, one of which was to announce their candidacy privately
to Quintilianus.
Unfortunately very few people announced their candidacy, and even after
these elections we will still be short of two Quaestores.
On the last day before the deadline, since no candidates were forthcoming,
Piscinus announced his candidacy for Diribitor on the main list.

Immediately after that Quintilianus issued an edict waiving the requirement
of contacting him privately about candidacies for the case of Piscinus.
It then turned out that the edict was superfluous, because Piscinus had
announced his candidacy privately to Quintilianus on the phone, even though
not by email, but the requirement was to contact Quintilianus privately, not
to contact him by private email, so in reality no exception to the
requirements had been made in order to accept Piscinus' candidacy.

Two days later Cato suddenly woke up and decided to announce his candidacy
for Quaestor, so he asked Quintilianus to make an exception for him, since
he was two days past the deadline.
His request wasn't accepted, but he will have a chance to run (by announcing
his candidacy in time) when a new call for candidates will be issued for the
two still uncovered posts of Quaestor.

The moderation of Cato and Sulla has nothing to do with candidacies and
elections, except maybe because of the fact that both used the topic as an
excuse to post offensive posts.
They wrote several posts which were offensive to one person or another, not
only the two ones which are linked to in the Praetrices' edict. I personally
can't spend the time required to review all past posts and point out the
offensive ones, but the offenses have been going on for almost a month now,
and I hope the Praetrices will actually spend the time to collect and quote
all the posts in question on this list, since our collective memory seems to
be so short.

I have to remind everybody that being put in moderation is not a curtailing
of one's right to free speech, but only a curtailing of the right to free
insult.
It means that the person can still post, but their posts are reviewed before
going through in order to make sure that they comlpy with the posting
guidelines.

Optime valete,
Livia

Cato Messallinae sal.

Yes, I missed the deadline. Piscinus didn't write privately to him. Both of us missed a requirement. Yet Piscinus was given a waiver in less than 24 hours, and I... well, if you're waiting for Quintilianus to respond, as I still am, you might want to get some food and water ready. It's been 11 days so far without a response yet.

Vale,

Cato

Well, we could make pom poms out of roving (fleece before it is separated and spun into yarn), which the Romans certainly had, and I expect, is fuzzy. But make lots and lots of white ones!

Vale Bene

I concur, it would be cool for each cheer section to have their own pom-pom
(they must be fuzzy!) colors... Awesome idea!!

Email him! That's what I would do. I do know that he was very sick and also had to travel on business. I think he posted that on the Senate list. In any case, by the time he wades through all the posts from the ML....well...

Group: Nova-Roma Message: 73904 From: Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Date: 2010-02-27
Subject: FIRST EQUIRRIA - Sacrifice Made by Pontifex Cn. Lentulus
Cn. Lentulus pontifex consulibus, praetoribus, senatui populoque Novo Romano s. p. d.

Salvete Quirites et Commilitones!

Today
is Equirria, and Mars Pater is celebrated. Currently there is no Flamen
Martialis, so traditionally his duty is undertaken by one of
pontifices. As pontifex, I have conducted the Equirria Sacrificial
Ceremony today, before my home altar.

We honour all soldiers and
retired soldiers among us, who do serve and served in any of the
world's armed forces, and we ask Father Mars, the Father of the Roman
people, that he bless them and their families and their lives.

We
honour all Nova Roman legionary re-enactors among us, who continue the
symbolic traditions of the Roman Army as a honour guard and as a
demonstrative and educational military, and we ask Father Mars to
support them and to give them success in their efforts.

About the ceremony I conducted.

Since
the Roman religion is very conservative and once a ceremony is
established it should have to kept in the same form using the same
words and choreography, I tried to keep as much part of the previous
Equirria ceremonies as it was possible, for example, the words taken
from Ovid's Fasti, yet some modifications had to be made. Some
sentences were in bad Latin, and some very very superfluous and not in
agreement with some formal requirements.

On the other hand, I extended the previous ceremony with new parts in line with Roman ritualistic traditions.

Celebrate Father Mars.

Please,
forget all the disgusting and insignificant personal rivalry in Nova
Roma, and rejoice with Father Mars, God of War and Agriculture, who is
both peaceful and terrible in the same divine person. Pray to him and
ask him to support Nova Roma, to expel the harmful and strengthen the
prosperous.

Nova Roma will celebrate its Twelfth Birthday on
this 1st March: Nova Roma was born in the first day of the month of
Father Mars, so Nova Roma is under the protection of Mars: we can
placate him with our offerings and prayers, and finally we will triumph!

EQUIRRIA RITUAL TO MARS FOR THE QUIRITIAN PEOPLE OF NOVA ROMA

by offering this incense to you
I pray good prayers so
that you may be benevolent and propitious
to the Quiritian Senate and People of Nova Roma,
to me, to my household and to my family.]

- I placed incense in the focus of the altar.

as by offering to you the incense
I have well prayed good prayers,
for the very same reason
be thou blessed by this sacrificial wine.]

- I poured a libation on the altar.

"Mars Pater,
uti te ture commovendo
bonas preces bene precatus sum,
eiusdem rei ergo
macte vino inferio esto"

2) SACRIFICIUM I

"Mars pater,
quod tibi fieri oportet culignam vini dapi,
eius rei ergo macte
hac illace dape pullucenda esto!"

[Father Mars,
to you it is proper for a cup of wine to be given,
for the sake of this thing therefore may you be blessed
by this feast offering].

- I poured a libation on the altar and added laurel for Mars.

3) PRECATIO

"Mars Pater,
qui currui temporis equos citos iungis
ut mensem Martium adducas,
te precor, venerorque,
quaeso, obtestorque,
uti fortitudinem constantiamque,
vim ac virtutem gravitatemque,
imperium magnum maiestatemque,
auctoritatem severitatemque,
victoriam valetudinemque
populo Novo Romano Quiritibus,
Reique Publicae Populi Novi Romani Quiritium
semper tribuas;
utique milites Novos Romanos veros et proprios custodias;
militesque legionum reconstructivarum ipsasque legiones adiuves;
utique sies volens propitius
Senatui Populoque Novo Romano Quiritibus,
consulibus, praetoribus, praesidibus provinciarum,
omnibus militibus veris et propriis
atque omnibus militibus legionum reconstructivarum,
legatis, tribunis, centurionibus,
collegio pontificum,
mihi, domo, familiae!"

[Father Mars,
who hitch your swift horses to the chariot of time
to bring on the month of March,
I ask and revere you,
I pray and beseech you
so that you may grant
fortitude and constancy,
strength, virtue and gravity,
great power and majesty,
initiative and seriousness,
victory and safety
to the Quiritian people of Nova Roma,
to the Republic of the Quiritian people of Nova Roma;
so that you may take care of every soldier in Nova Roma serving in armies;
and may support every soldier in the reenactor legions and their legions;
so that you may be benevolent and propitious
to the Quiritian Senate and People of Nova Roma,
to the consuls, praetors and provincial governors,
to every real soldier serving in armies,
as well as to every soldier in the reenactor legions,
to the legates, tribunes and centurions,
to the college of the pontiffs,
to me, to my household and to my family.]

4) SACRIFICIUM II

"Quarum rerum ergo macte
hoc libo libando,
hoc vino libando,
huc thure obmovendo
esto fito volens propitius
Senatui Populoque Novo Romano Quiritibus,
consulibus, praetoribus, praesidibus provinciarum,
omnibus militibus veris et propriis
atque omnibus militibus legionum reconstructivarum,
legatis, tribunis, centurionibus,
collegio pontificum,
mihi, domo, familiae!"

[For all these reasons, thou blessed
by offering this libum,
by offering this wine,

be benevolent and propitious
to the Quiritian Senate and People of Nova Roma,

as well as to every soldier in the reenactor legions,
to the legates, tribunes and centurions,
to the college of the pontiffs,

- Libum, wine and incense were sacrificed.

5) REDDITIO

"Mars Pater,
qui in campo tuo certamen Equirriae semper prospicis,
macte istace dape pollucenda esto,
macte vino inferio esto"

[Father Mars,
who always observe from afar the race of the Equirria on your own field, may you be blessed by this feast offering,
may you be blessed by the sacrificial wine.]"

- I offered Mars Pater laurel, cakes and wine on the altar.

"Iane Pater,
uti te ture commovendo
bonas preces bene precatus sum,
eiusdem rei ergo macte vino inferio esto"

[Father Ianus,
as by offering to you the incense
I have well prayed good prayers,
for the very same reason
be thou blessed by this sacrificial wine.]

- I poured a libation on the altar.

"Illicet!"

[It is permitted to go.]

- End of the ceremony.

6) PIACULUM

"Iane,
Mars Pater,
Iuppiter Optime Maxmime, Iuno, Minerva,
Concordia,
Omnes Di Immortales quocumque nomine:
si quidquam vonis in hac caerimonia displicuit,
hoc ture veniam peto
et vitium meum expio."

[Ianus,
Father Mars,
Iuppiter, The Best and Greatest, Iuno, Minerva,
Concordia,
All Gods Immortal by whathever name I may call you:
if anything in this ceremony is displeasing to you,
with this incense and wine I ask forgiveness
and expiate my fault.]

- I offered incense on the altar and poured a libation on the altar.

You know they would! Blue ones, white ones, green ones, red ones, pink with purple polka dots ones, wouldn't matter the color as long as they could drag them all over the house and it wouldn't be long before I'd find the pieces all over the place, but at least, they'd have had fun tearing them to shreds! Just have to share this. As I was typing my previous reply to Caeca, Numa strolled by with a toy stuffed fish in his mouth. It had been attached to a toy fishing reel. Emphasis on the word *had*. So, I asked, "Where's the reel, Numa?" A few seconds late, Felix shows up with the reel in his mouth. Nevermind! ROFL

Red is a pretty color ...so pretty. So pretty that looking it can distract folks from ...things like ...driving chariots! Subject: Re: What really happened (answers to C. Valeria Pulchra).( Was: "Eno
Salve Cato,
lying is not going to work. It will waste a lot of my time, but I will
repeat the truth every time someone spreads disinformation.

The consul waived the requirement of contacting him privately about
candidacies, because he thought he had required in the edict that candidates
contact him by private email.
It turned out that he had not written in the edict that candidates should
contact him by private email, but only that candidates contact him
privately.
This requirement was fulfilled by Piscinus, because he had contacted the
consul by a private phone call.

If the consul had written into the edict the requirement about the private
email to him, the exception he made for Piscinus would have had to do only
with waiving this requirement.

Piscinus announced his candidacy before the deadline.

You, Cato announced your candidacy two days after the deadline and asked the
consul to make an exception for you by extending the deadline.

So Piscinus' exception (if it had existed) would have been about the
requirement to write a private email to the consul.

Your exception (if the consul had made it) would have been about extending
the deadline.

This is not the same exception, but they are two different exceptions. Get
it?

Even if Piscinus had been given an exception, this would not have entitled
you to receive a different exception.

I already wrote once that I don't want to spend my time re-reading all the
posts in order to find the offensive ones by you and Sulla.
I think this job should be done by the Praetrices and their cohors, and that
they should then quote the offending posts in their moderation edict.

Anyway, be sure that you have been, and still are, extremely annoying and
offensive. If for nothing else, because you seem to be taking people for
morons and assuming they will buy your heavily modified version of facts.

Optime vale,
Livia

Cato Liviae sal.

Cute, but inaccurate.

"so in reality no exception to the requirements had been made in order to
accept Piscinus' candidacy."

Piscinus did not fulfill the requirement as stated by the junior consul,
which was why it was necessary that the consul waive that requirement. When
I asked the junior consul to consider my candidacy by making a similar
exception, he simply ignored me - and has done so even until this very
moment. Not even the briefest courtesy of acknowledging that I asked in the
first place. He thinks it's perfectly acceptable as a member of the
government to be rude to me simply because he dislikes me.

"except maybe because of the fact that both used the topic as an excuse to
post offensive posts."

Please show me exactly which post(s) I made that were offensive, Livia.
Just because a post says something you don't like doesn't mean it's
offensive, and the senior consul obviously disagrees with you.

Vale,

Cato

Salve, Livia. I already have Iulius Crassus' entry for Russata. But of course nothing forbids you from entering your chariot, if you wish. There are 3 places still open.

I know we do in Brazil and Argentina, but I don't know about Chile. Still, that earthquake was so strong it was felt in Buenos Aires! My heart goes out to them. I lived through many an earthquake, but nothing like that, thank goodness. There's a tsumani headed for Hawaii due to hit in about half an hour. We have tsumani advisories in effect here right now and the police are out in force getting the surfers out of the water and asking everyone to stay off the beach until further notice. I only live five minutes from the ocean, so I am staying on the alert in case they tell us to leave.

As of this moment we are being told that a very high surf with stronger than normal currents are due to hit us sometime this afternoon. So, it's coming. It's already hitting the southern tip of Baja California. They're mostly concerned with having no one in the water or on the beach. People who have boats in the marina are worried about them and obviously, no one is being allowed to take their boats out to sea. So unless something really odd happens, like your friend, we, too, expect a bit of a mess but nothing more. Nevertheless, since I do have my mother and my animals to worry about, I'm keeping an eye on the situation. You know what's really telling - I can usually see seagulls out on Morro Rock, but they have all flown inland. It's like they know that they're better off away from the shore. Yet, I heard some surfers complaining about not being allowed to go and ride the high surf. Honestly, sometimes animals are so much smarter

First, I did not say they were the *same* exceptions. Please do not put words in my mouth. I do not lie, and repeated attempts to say that I do have failed in every instance. Yours is just one more feeble attempt to deflect away from the actual discussion.

There was an exception made for a political pal of Quintilianus - an exception that Piscinus didn't even request - and simple (continued) silence in response to my request. He does not even deign to respond that he has thought about it and has turned me down. Nothing. And this even after his <cough> sincere expression of concern that our vacant magistracies be filled.

What does this say to citizens?

It says that as long as you're a friend or ally of the junior consul, he'll do anything necessary to give you a leg up; if you are not, he will simply ignore you.

Is that the kind of attitude from the government that derives its authority from us that we should expect or that we deserve as citizens?

ABC news is running live video from Hawaii. You can access it on the Yahoo home page. My neighbor has a horses and she is taking them and leaving. We are so close to the ocean and not very high up and it was making her so nervous, she just decided to leave. It made me think that perhaps I should, too. Better safe than sorry. If it were just me, I would stay, but my mother moves very slowly and I have our precious Nova Roma kitties as well as my horse and my dog. My other neighbor took his kids to his parents and then came back to watch over his house. So, I'm going to take them to my friend who lives on higher ground than me.
Oh, the ocean is starting to recede on the video. Ok, be back in a while.

Subject: Pridie Kalendae Martiae: Romulus and the Senate
M. Moravius Piscinus Horatianus Quiritibus, cultoribus Deorum et omnibus salutem plurimam dicit: Di Deaeque vos bene ament.

Hodie est die pristini Kalendas Martias; haec dies comitialis est:

Felices natalis Gai Iuli Iuliane! Di dent tibi, noster Flamen Florialis, quae veils.

The Ancestry of Romulus

"At length, after many kings had reigned in this city, Numitor and Amulius became joint sovereigns. But Amulius, having deprived
Numitor, who was the elder, of his share of the throne, condemned his daughter Rhea to perpetual virginity, that no male offspring of
Numitor's family might arise to claim the crown, palliating the injury by an appearance of honour, so that she might not seem to have been compelled, but to have been chosen one of the vestal virgins. Being shut up, accordingly, in a grove sacred to Mars, she gave birth to two boys, whether the offspring of an illicit connexion with a mortal, or of the god Mars, is uncertain. This affair becoming known, Amulius, whose fears were increased by the birth of twins, ordered the children to be exposed, and threw his niece into prison, of which ill-treatment she died. Fortune, however, having a care for the raising of Rome, threw the children in the way of a she-wolf to be suckled, which, having lost her cubs, and longing to empty her overcharged teats, offered herself as a nurse to the infants. As she made frequent returns to the children, as if they had been her own offspring, Faustulus, a shepherd, observed her proceedings, and, withdrawing them from the beast, brought them up in a rude way of life among his cattle. That they were the sons of Mars, was believed, as on plain proof, either because they were born in the grove of Mars, or because they were nursed by a wolf, which is under the protection of Mars. The names of the boys were Remus and Romulus. As they grew up among the shepherds, daily contests in strength increased their vigour and agility. While they were frequently engaged, with great activity, in preventing robbers from seizing the cattle, it happened that Remus, having been taken by the robbers, was brought before the king, as if he had himself been guilty of that which he was endeavouring to prevent in others, and had been accustomed to make depredations on Numitor's flocks. He was consequently given up to Numitor for punishment. But Numitor, who was touched with compassion for the stripling's youth, was led to suspect that he might be one of his exposed grandchildren, and while the resemblance of his features to those of his daughter, and his age corresponding with the time of the exposure, kept him in suspense, Faustulus unexpectedly came in with Romulus, and the origin of the youths being ascertained from him, a conspiracy was formed, the young men taking up arms to revenge the death of their mother, and Numitor to recover the throne of which he had been deprived." ~ M. Iunianus Iustinus, Historia 43.1

Romulus First Establishes the Senate

"As soon as Romulus had regulated these matters he determined to appoint senators to assist him in administering the public business, and to this end he chose a hundred men from among the patricians, selecting them in the following manner. He himself appointed one, the best out of their whole number, to whom he thought fit to entrust the government of the city whenever he himself should lead the army beyond the borders. He next ordered each of the tribes to choose three men who were then at the age of greatest prudence and were distinguished by their birth. After these nine were chosen he ordered each curia likewise to name three patricians who were the most worthy. Then adding to the first nine, who had been named by the tribes, the ninety who were chosen by the curiae, and appointing as their head the man he himself had first selected, he completed the number of a hundred senators. The name of this council may be expressed in Greek by gerousia or "council of elders," and it is called by the Romans to this day; but whether it received its name from the advanced age of the men who were appointed to it or from their merit, I cannot say for certain. For the ancients used to call the older men and those of greatest merit gerontes or "elders." The members of the senate were called Conscript Fathers, and they retained that name down to my time. This council, also, was a Greek institution. At any rate, the Greek kings, both those who inherited the realms of their ancestors and those who were elected by the people themselves to be their rulers, had a council composed of the best men, as both Homer and the most ancient of the poets testify; and the authority of the ancient kings was not arbitrary and absolute as it is in our days.

"Having made these regulations, he distinguished the honours and powers which he wished each class to have. For the king he had reserved these prerogatives: in the first place, the supremacy in religious ceremonies and sacrifices and the conduct of everything relating to the worship of the Gods; secondly, the guardianship of the laws and customs of the country and the general oversight of justice in all cases, whether founded on the law of nature or the civil law; he was also the judge in person the greatest crimes, leaving the lesser to the senators, but seeing to it that no error was made in their decisions; he was to summon the senate and call together the popular assembly, to deliver his opinion first and carry out the decision of the majority. These prerogatives he granted to the king and, in addition, the absolute command in war. To the senate he assigned honour and authority as follows: to deliberate and give their votes concerning everything the king should refer to them, the decision of the majority to prevail. This also Romulus took over from the constitution of the Lacedaemonians; for their kings, too, did not have arbitrary power to do everything they wished, but the gerousia exercised complete control of public affairs. To the populace he granted these three privileges: to choose magistrates, to ratify laws, and to decide concerning war whenever the king left the decision to them; yet even in these matters their authority was not unrestricted, since the concurrence of the senate was necessary to give effect to their decisions. The people did not give their votes all at the same time, but were summoned to meet by curiae, and whatever was resolved upon by the majority of the curiae was reported to the senate. But in our day this practice is reversed, since the senate does not deliberate upon the resolutions passed by the people, but the people have full power over the decrees of the senate; and which of the two customs is better I leave it open to others to determine." ~ Dionysis of Halicarnassus 2.12.1; 2.14.1-3

Our thought for today comes from Annaeus Seneca minor, Epistles 31:

"And, if you would be happy, entreat the Gods that none of Their fond desires for you may be brought to pass. What They wish to have
heaped upon you are not really good things; there is only one good, the cause and the support of a happy life, - trust in oneself."

Salvete, Livia, Caeca et al.

Yep, Livia, the seagulls were right. When we got to my friend's house, it started raining, so she invited us to stay for dinner. We had a very nice time. She has house bunnies and the kitties had a great time with them. I don't know if they thought the bunnies were just funny looking cats or if the bunnies thought the kitties were just funny looking bunnies, but either way, a good time was had by all of them.
We watched from her second-story balcony how the ocean pulled away from the shore and exposed the base of Morro Rock and about twenty minutes later, the sea surged in and covered it back up with about another two feet of water added, That was something to see. Some of the waves would be coming in while some were receding and they were crashing into each other. Never saw anything like it. It was still going on when it got too dark to watch anymore.
Actually, I wasn't the least bit concerned until President Obama appeared on TV and told everyone to take it seriously and then read off the places where the tsunami was to strike and when he said California, I went, "Uh-oh!" My neighbors saw the President, too, and it made us all nervous. Luckily, the tsunami was only a few feet high. So, we're all right and back home safe and sound.
Went out this morning to see how the ocean looked today. The surf is still a bit too high, but the surfers are out in force and there's quite a bit of debris washed up on the beach. I know it's all right now, though, because the seagulls are back.
Wish the people of Chile had been spared. Still, they are in better shape than Haiti. They have a better infrastructure and Chile is not a poor country. Btw, does anyone know if we have any citizens there? Caeca asked, but I only know we have citizens in Argentina and Brazil.

Valete bene,

ABC news is running live video from Hawaii. You can access it on the Yahoo home page. My neighbor has horses and she is taking them and leaving.

Honestly, sometimes animals are so much smarter
than people.

We should have that painted on all our Veneta chariots! On the back, of course, so all the other charioteers can read it as we go by.
That is, if they're still in their chariots...
