Ave and Salve,

i agree but that did happen within the Senate and not on the Forum messaged out

to every citizen in the Respublica. That is all what I mean.

And I also believe that most people today are not interested in adding more

stress and frustration to their mostly hectic live in general.

If we want to succeed that all has to go in some private or limited space but it

is surely not inviting for others!

Ave,

Except for the fact that one arguments and fighting in NR is not different

than what went on in ancient Rome.  Lets we forget the debates between

Cicero and Hortensius.  Scaveola the Jurist vs Livius Drusus (and probably

others who I am leaving out) Or Cato Uticensis vs Caesar etc etc.  To put a

clamp on the fighting and debates on the ML would be to take away something

imminently Roman from Nova Roma!

I will gently remind you that first, it is the *job* of the senators, as the supreme policy-making body of the Respublica, to "discuss and question" everything. It is our responsibility and obligation to do so.

Second, our Roman ancestors were indeed creators - and one of the greatest legacies they have left is is the practice of oratory and rhetoric in the law.

Salve Priscilla,

Welcome to Nova Roma! There are several things you might want to do to get acquainted with us. First, may I suggest you join the Newroman list? This list was created, specifically, to help new probational citizens learn about us, and to answer any questions you may have concerning NR. You can join by sending an email to: Newroman-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Then, take a look at our site. You'll find information on our Provinces, there, and you might want to contact the Governor of your Province, to find about any local events, and to also find out if there are any Nova Romans living near you.

In addition, you will want to chose a Roman name, and you can find information on doing that on our site, as well. Best of luck, and I hope you enjoy your stay with us.

Vale quam optime,
C. Maria Caeca

The Declaratio states otherwise, and quite clearly. And yet you joined
anyway.

I am continually baffled as to why folks would read the foundational
documents of Nova Roma and somehow interpret them in such a way that we
must somehow have not really meant what they actually said. All too
often, they come here bound and determined to show us our folly, and
"fix it" for us. Despite, of course, our plainly-stated wishes and
intentions.

Gods save us from people who come here intending to save us from ourselves!

Salve,

I had joined because of the Religio. Nova Roma may aspire to be a real nation(even a sovereign one) but it's not there yet. No reason not to deal with reality, Vedius.

You make my argument for me. If you disagreed with such a fundamental
point, there were (and are) other organizations that claim to practice
the Religio; you could easily have joined one of them. But here you are,
telling us poor benighted souls how foolish we are, struggling against
reality. And why? Either because you enjoy being a gadfly (which we've
certainly had our share of), or because you are trying to save us from
ourselves and force us to "deal with reality" despite ourselves (ditto).

Either way, you came here at odds with one of the core, fundamental
principles of the organization, one that was the very basis for its
creation, and came here and continue to attempt to change it. You had
other options, and yet you came here, knowing what Nova Roma claims to
be, and change it despite itself.

That is an attitude I simply do not understand.

Kindly provide a list of them please.

I'm pretty sure I didn't say any of you were benighted souls or that you were foolish. Nice projection there.

And why? Either because you enjoy being a gadfly (which we've

Or I merely provided my opinion on the nation status of this organization.

How have I attempted to change it in this context? I'm not even a member of this organization.

This attitude that you simply don't understand is irrelevent.

Vedius Germanicus, you wrote:

"The Declaratio states otherwise, and quite clearly. And yet you joined anyway."

Now, I agree with you to a certain extent. But using the Declaratio as a legal document is an unsupportable argument. You do refer to the Declaratio as one of the "foundational documents", which is of course correct, but our law is based upon our Constitution.

The Constitution says two things which are, taken together, a rather equivocal statement:

"We, the Senate and People of Nova Roma, as an independent and sovereign nation..." and "...Nova Roma shall endeavor to exist, in all manners practical and acceptable..."

So we quite clearly state the intent to be an "independent and sovereign nation", yet will do so only as far as it is "practical and acceptable".

But the term "nation" is itself fraught with ambiguity - the meanings of "nation", "state", and "country" being a tangled and confusing issue, and serves no real purpose in our situation; like the Constitution itself, the meaning you imply is the creative result of individuals who are themselves products of a late 18th-century political framework.

In this framework, is it truly "practical" to declare ourselves an "independent and sovereign nation"? Would it be remotely "acceptable" to, say, the Federal Government of the United States of America to do so? The answer to both these questions is obviously "no".

As I have said repeatedly, we most certainly *are* a res publica by the definition of the time period with which we are concerned, but even by their understanding of the term we most certainly are *not* a "nation".

Does this mean that someday we could not be one? Not at all; we live in a world of infinite possibilities, and there is certainly nothing wrong in a desire to become that we are not at the present time. In my own opinion, I often think of us as the basic equivalent of the Government of Poland or France in Exile, in Great Britain after the Nazis had overrun the actual territory of Poland and France during the Second World War. We are a political "state" - a respublica; we have a form of government and law which could, in fact, function fully if we did become a "nation" in the 18th-century ideal to which you refer.

But we are faced with much more urgent challenges - immediate and pressing, like our electoral process - than concern over a term which is hotly debated by political scientists and philosophers to this day and serves no immediate or useful purpose in our current condition.

Technically, a triclinium is simply a room that held long low benches wide enough for three people to lie down on with enough room for their right hands to reach the table :)

You'd just need to find a restaurant/rental space large enough to place enough of them for your guests and which is willing to allow that mode of dining.

Hodiernus dies est pridie Kalendas Octobris; haec dies comitialis est.

"My full heart bids me boldly sing the horses of the ravisher from the
underworld and the stars darkened by the shadow of his infernal
chariot and the gloomy chambers of the queen of Hell. Come not nigh,
ye unititiate. Now has divine madness driven all mortal thoughts from
my breast, and my heart is filled with Phoebus' inspiration; now see I
the shrine reel and its foundations totter while the threshold glows
with radiant light telling that the god is at hand. And now I hear a
loud din from the depths of the earth, the temple of Cecrops re-echoes
and Eleusis waves its holy torches. The hissing snakes of Triptolemus
raise their scaly necks chafed by the curving collar, and, uptowering
as they glide smoothly along, stretch forth their rosy crests toward
the chant. See from afar rises Hecate with her three various heads and
with her comes forth Iacchus smooth of skin, his temples crowned with
ivy. There clothes him the pelt of a Parthian tiger, its gilded claws
knotted together, and the Lydian thyrsus guides his drunken footsteps.

Ye gods, whom the numberless host of the dead serves in ghostly
Avernus, into whose greedy treasury is paid all that perishes upon
earth, ye whose fields the pale streams of intertwining Styx surround,
while Phlegethon, his rapids tossed in spray, flows through them with
steaming eddies — do you unfold for me the mysteries of your sacred
story and the secrets of your world. Say with what torch the god of
love overcame Dis, and tell how Proserpine was stolen away in her
maiden pride to win Chaos as a dower; and how through many lands
Ceres, sore troubled, pursued her anxious search; whence cornº was
given to man whereby he laid aside his acorn food, and the new-found
ear made useless Dodona's oaks.

Meanwhile Proserpine is borne away in the winged car, her hair
streaming before the wind, beating her arms in lamentation and calling
in vain remonstrance to the clouds: ['Why hast thou not hurled at me,
father, bolts forged by the Cyclopes' hands? Was this thy will to
deliver thy daughter to the cruel shades and drive her for ever from
this world? Does love move thee not at all? Hast thou nothing of a
father's feeling? What ill deed of mine has stirred such anger in
thee? When Phlegra raged with war's madness I bore no standard against
the gods; 'twas through no strength of mine that ice-bound Ossa
supported frozen Olympus. For attempt of what crime, for complicity
with what guilt, am I thrust down in banishment to the bottomless pit
of Hell? Happy girls whom other ravishers have stolen; they at least
enjoy the general light of day, while I, together with my virginity,
lose the air of heaven; stolen from me alike is innocence and
daylight. Needs must I quit this world and be led a captive bride to
serve Hell's tyrant. Ye flowers that I loved in so evil an hour, oh,
why did I scorn my mother's warning? Too late did I detect the wiles
of Venus. Mother, my mother, whether in the vales of Phrygian Ida the
dread pipe sounds about thine ears with Lydian strains, or thou
hauntest mount Dindymus, ahowl with self-mutilated Galli, and
beholdest the naked swords of the Curetes, aid me in my bitter need;
frustrate Pluto's mad lust and stay the funereal reins of my fierce
ravisher.'" Claudian, "The Rape of Proserpine" XXXIII, XXXV

As September moves on and October greets us, the days grow shorter and
we remember the changing of the seasons because of great Pluto's
abduction of Proserpine, Ceres' only daughter.

"It was by my account the 30th of September, when, in the manner as
above said, I first set foot upon this horrid island; when the sun,
being to us in its autumnal equinox, was almost over my head; for I
reckoned myself, by observation, to be in the latitude of nine degrees
twenty-two minutes north of the line. After I had been there about
ten or twelve days, it came into my thoughts that I should lose my
reckoning of time for want of books, and pen and ink, and should even
forget the Sabbath days; but to prevent this, I cut with my knife upon
a large post, in capital letters-and making it into a great cross, I
set it up on the shore where I first landed – 'I came on shore here on
the 30th September 1659.'" - Defoe, "Robinson Crusoe" ch. 4

M. Moravius Piscinus Pontifex Maximus Quiritibus, cultoribus Deorum et omnibus salutem plurimam dicit: Mercurius eloquentiam in nos communicet.

Hodie est die pristine Kalendas Octobras; haec dies comitialis est:

MERCURIUS

"May You, Mercurius, make plump the richness of my house and all else within, save my natural talents, and as usual, may You remain the primary guardian over me." ~ Q. Horatius Flaccus, Satires 2.6.14-15

"There are four Mercuries. First is the son of Caelus and Dies; second of Jupiter and Cronia or Proserpina; third is the Son of Kronos and Maia, who invented the lyre; and fourth is the son of Cyllenius who they say invented the Egyptian hieroglyphs and numbers." ~ Lucius Ampelius, Quot fuere Ioves vel alii in loco dii deaeque 9.5

TALASSIO

"Why is the far-famed 'Talassio' sung at the marriage ceremony? Is it derived from talasia (spinning)? For they call the wool-basket (talaros) talasus. When they lead in the bride, they spread a fleece beneath her; she herself brings with her a distaff and her spindle, and wreaths her husband's door with wool. Or is the statement of the historians true? They relate that there was a certain young man, brilliant in military achievements and valuable in other ways, whose name was Talasius; and when the Romans were carrying off the daughters of the Sabines who had come to see the games, a maiden of particularly beautiful appearance was being carried off for him by some plebeian retainers of his. To protect their enterprise and to prevent anyone from approaching and trying to wrest the maiden from them, they shouted continually that she was being brought as a wife for Talasius (Talasio). Since, therefore, everyone honored Talasius, they followed along and provided escort, joining in the good wishes and acclamations. Wherefore since Talasius's marriage was happy, they became accustomed to invoke Talasius in other marriages also, even as the Greeks invoke Hymen." ~ Plutarch, Roman Questions 31

AUC 80 / 673 BCE: Fetiales, Horatii, and Curiatii

"[Fufetius says] 'Tullius, some God who keeps watch over both our cities would seem, just as upon many other occasions, so especially in what relates to this combat to have made his goodwill manifest. For that the champions who are to fight on behalf of all their people should be found inferior to none in birth, brave in arms, most comely in appearance, and that they should furthermore have been born of one father and mother, and, most wonderful of all, that they should have come into the world on the same day, the Horatii with you and the Curiatii with us, all this, I say, has every appearance of a remarkable instance of divine favor. Why, therefore, do we not accept this great providence of the God and each of us invite the triplets on his side to engage in the combat for the supremacy? For not only all the other advantages which we could desire in the best-qualified champions are to be found in these men, but, as they are brothers, they will be more unwilling than any others among either the Romans or the Albans to forsake their companions when in distress; and furthermore, the emulation of the other youths, which cannot easily be appeased in any other way, will be promptly settled. For I surmise that among you also, as well as among the Albans, there is a kind of strife among many of those who lay claim to bravery; but if we inform them that some providential fortune has anticipated all human efforts and has itself furnished us with champions qualified to engage upon equal terms in the cause of the cities, we shall easily persuade them to desist. For they will then look upon themselves as inferior to the triplets, not in point of bravery, but only in respect of a special boon of Nature and of the favor of a Chance that is equally inclined toward both sides.'" - Dionysius of Halicarnassus 3.14

"There happened to be in each of the armies a triplet of brothers, fairly matched in years and strength. It is generally agreed that they were called Horatii and Curiatii. Few incidents in antiquity have been more widely celebrated, yet in spite of its celebrity there is a discrepancy in the accounts as to which nation each belonged. There are authorities on both sides, but I find that the majority give the name of Horatii to the Romans, and my sympathies lead me to follow them. The kings suggested to them that they should each fight on behalf of their country, and where victory rested, there should be the sovereignty. They raised no objection; so the time and place were fixed. But before they engaged a treaty was concluded between the Romans and the Albans, providing that the nation whose representatives proved victorious should receive the peaceable submission of the other. This is the earliest treaty recorded, and as all treaties, however different the conditions they contain, are concluded with the same forms, I will describe the forms with which this one was concluded as handed down by tradition. The Fetial put the formal question to Tullus: "Do you, King, order me to make a treaty with the Pater Patratus of the Alban nation?" On the king replying in the affirmative, the Fetial said: 'I demand of thee, King, some tufts of grass.' The king replied: 'Take those that are pure.' The Fetial brought pure grass from the Citadel. Then he asked the king: 'Do you constitute me the plenipotentiary of the People of Rome, the Quirites, sanctioning also my vessels and comrades?' To which the king replied: 'So far as may be without hurt to myself and the People of Rome, the Quirites, I do.' The Fetial was M. Valerius. He made Spurius Furius the Pater Patratus by touching his head and hair with the grass. Then the Pater Patratus, who is constituted for the purpose of giving the treaty the religious sanction of an oath, did so by a long formula in verse, which it is not worth while to quote. After reciting the conditions he said: 'Hear, O Jupiter, hear! thou Pater Patratus of the people of Alba! Hear ye, too, people of Alba! As these conditions have been publicly rehearsed from first to last, from these tablets, in perfect good faith, and inasmuch as they have here and now been most clearly understood, so these conditions the People of Rome will not be the first to go back from. If they shall, in their national council, with false and malicious intent be the first to go back, then do thou, Jupiter, on that day, so smite the People of Rome, even as I here and now shall smite this swine, and smite them so much the more heavily, as thou art greater in power and might.' With these words he struck the swine with a flint. In similar wise the Albans recited their oath and formularies through their own dictator and their priests.

"On the conclusion of the treaty the six combatants armed themselves. They were greeted with shouts of encouragement from their comrades, who reminded them that their fathers' Gods, their Fatherland, their fathers, every fellow-citizen, every fellow-soldier, were now watching their weapons and the hands that wielded them. Eager for the contest and inspired by the voices round them, they advanced into the open space between the opposing lines. The two armies were sitting in front of their respective camps, relieved from personal danger but not from anxiety, since upon the fortunes and courage of this little group hung the issue of dominion. Watchful and nervous, they gaze with feverish intensity on a spectacle by no means entertaining. The signal was given, and with uplifted swords the six youths charged like a battle-line with the courage of a mighty host. Not one of them thought of his own danger; their sole thought was for their country, whether it would be supreme or subject, their one anxiety that they were deciding its future fortunes. When, at the first encounter, the flashing swords rang on their opponents' shields, a deep shudder ran through the spectators; then a breathless silence followed, as neither side seemed to be gaining any advantage. Soon, however, they saw something more than the swift movements of limbs and the rapid play of sword and shield: blood became visible flowing from open wounds. Two of the Romans fell one on the other, breathing out their life, whilst all the three Albans were wounded. The fall of the Romans was welcomed with a burst of exultation from the Alban army; whilst the Roman legions, who had lost all hope, but not all anxiety, trembled for their solitary champion surrounded by the three Curiatii. It chanced that he was untouched, and though not a match for the three together, he was confident of victory against each separately. So, that he might encounter each singly, he took to flight, assuming that they would follow as well as their wounds would allow. He had run some distance from the spot where the combat began, when, on looking back, he saw them following at long intervals from each other, the foremost not far from him. He turned and made a desperate attack upon him, and whilst the Alban army were shouting to the other Curiatii to come to their brother's assistance, Horatius had already slain his foe and, flushed with victory, was awaiting the second encounter. Then the Romans cheered their champion with a shout such as men raise when hope succeeds to despair, and he hastened to bring the fight to a close. Before the third, who was not far away, could come up, he dispatched the second Curiatius. The survivors were now equal in point of numbers, but far from equal in either confidence or strength. The one, unscathed after his double victory, was eager for the third contest; the other, dragging himself wearily along, exhausted by his wounds and by his running, vanquished already by the previous slaughter of his brothers, was an easy conquest to his victorious foe. There was, in fact, no fighting. The Roman cried exultingly: "Two have I sacrificed to appease my brothers' shades; the third I will offer for the issue of this fight, that the Roman may rule the Alban." He thrust his sword downward into the neck of his opponent, who could no longer lift his shield, and then despoiled him as he lay. Horatius was welcomed by the Romans with shouts of triumph, all the more joyous for the fears they had felt. Both sides turned their attention to burying their dead champions, but with very different feelings, the one rejoicing in wider dominion, the other deprived of their liberty and under alien rule. The tombs stand on the spots where each fell; those of the Romans close together, in the direction of Alba; the three Alban tombs, at intervals, in the direction of Rome." ~ Titus Livius 1.24-25

Our thought for today comes from Epicurus, Philosophical Discourses 29:

"Of our desires some are natural and necessary, others are natural but not necessary; and others are neither natural nor necessary, but are due to groundless opinion."

Ummmm... I'm not attempting to "weasel around" anything at all. I made my case quite clearly, I thought, without rancor or hostility. The Declaratio is a great document, just as the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America is, but neither one is a basis for the law. We can identify ourselves the God-Kings of Mars if we like, but it would have no relevance to a real, functioning state.

It may be, Vedius, that the snap to retort with hostility is one of the very basic problems we have in this Respublica.

Salve,

Considering "weasel" is used as a pejorative, it's not out of the question to percieve your post as hostile.

You're just upset that not everyone believes the NR is a nation, so you're being defensive and perhaps hostile. Were you this upset when NR changed from being a micronation per the senatus consultum?

Salvete omnes,
I find the discussion on whether NR is a nation or not totally superfluous
in this context.

Of course people can leave nations, and they do it all the time. It's called
emigration.
There is a long history of people leaving their countries when they don't
like the political regime (or when the regime doesn't tolerate them). From
people fleeing communist regimes to Iranians leaving after the Khomeini
revolution. There were even a number of US citizens who moved to Europe
after Bush was elected.

Voting with your feet is actually quite common, specially for people who
find they have no alternatives.
And while emigration requires huge financial and emotional sacrifices,
leaving NR can be accomplished quite easily, for free, and without even
leaving your armchair.
Of course it's going to be a pretty common occurrence.

Optime valete,
Livia

I'm neither upset, defensive, nor hostile. Disappointed might be a
better term.

Believe me, there are many more things that one could find upsetting in
Nova Roma these days than a relatively abstract question on the nature
of nationhood. That ranks waaaay down on the list.

That said, Livia Plauta makes an excellent point; it is indeed possible
to leave a nation. People do it all the time in the modern world.

And in the Roman world, we have numerous examples of people becoming
Roman citizens, in effect leaving their former nation. So it was
certainly not unheard-of historically, either.

Salve,

Yea, I said that a while ago. Except I used the word "immigration."

Incorrectly, as it turns out. One leaves a nation through emigration.
One enters it through immigration.
