Cn. Lentulus legatus pro praetore Pannoniae Quiritibus SPD

As could be now be expected this time of the year, the Pannonian Nova Roman Reenactor Summer Camp has started again. This is it is open only to Pannonians, due to financial problems, but hopefully next year we can invite all citizens of Nova Roma, as we did in previous years.

The Summer Camp is held in the same location as last year, in Mountain Zemplén, Rostallo, Hungary, a beautiful montain landscape in the deep forest.

The event is organized by our new Nova Roman Pannonian local community, burgus Colonia Rostallo. The opening was held today, and I will travel there tomorrow, to preside over our Camp.

I had hoped to post this on the NRwiki group, but the whole board seems to be infested with spam, and I noticed another post on the matter here, so I might as well. I have run into a very strange error while trying to set up my editing account for the wiki and I hope someone can help. While in the Album Civium I go to the page to activate my wiki account, and after entering my password, I get the following error:

error:
Can't call method "abort" on an undefined value at /home/public/webhost/www.novaroma.org/http/civitas/lib/NovaRoma/EditMyAccount.pm line 534.

The error seems to be generated by the website itself, rather than my network or what have you. I have a screenshot of the error page that I can send on request. I certainly hope someone can help me sort out this problem, as I am eager to get started helping to fill in some of the blank spots in the wiki.

The creator of the NRwiki group was M. Lucretius Agricola. Perhaps expelling
him from NR was a mistake.
I think Lentulus might be a moderator, but currently he is at a Roman
reenactor camp, so I doubt he has Internet access.

The Wiki itself needs regular maintainance. I know that the NR Wiki had not
been upgraded for a while, then it was suddenly upgraded, creating some
problems in the process. This might be the cause of the error.

Again, it's not a good habit to scare off or expel the only people who know
about IT.

As far as I know it's not possible to delete a Wiki account. That should
explain why former citizens still have access. Unless things changed
recently.

Optime valete,
Livia

This error means that the variable on which the method "abort" is called is undefined instead of being an object that accepts the method. I don't know exactly who is the wiki IT Manager, maybe this could help him/her to fix the code.

I have just been returned from the Nova Roma Camp yesterday very late night, and I can address this idea just now.

That is a very good initiative and I fully support it, by any means with which I can, although with coding I can't help. I suggest you address the senate IT committee with this idea, because the power to decide about such things lies there.

Indeed, upon having read what you wrote, I checked your membership status (flavia@...), and it was set up to receive only "special notification" instead of "individual messages", which means that you would not receive regular messages from that mailing list. I changed your status to "individual messages". Sometimes Yahoo makes this kind of spontaneous changes out of error; I don't think it was made by someone.

At this current time, the ownership of the NRwiki mailing list lies in the hands of the consul Cn. Iulius Caesar.
I, as magister aranearius, have some limited access to some of the moderator tools, and I went to follow your suggestion and I have now made some changes on the settings of the group and changed it to initial moderation, to filter spammers out. I have now also removed the sole member who sent those spams during last week when I worked in the Nova Roma Summer Camp of Pannonia.

I hope I could help.

Vale optimé!

I think it's fair to point out that Tullia was entirely correct in her assumption that I was not around because I left the "civilized world" about Monday noon (my last Facebook action was at that hour), in order to travel to the Nova Roma Camp which is on the mountains, in the midst of a wild forest, where there was not only no internet connection, but not even cell phone coverage. It was quite an adventure, a Roman experience!

C. Maria Caeca Omnibus in Foro S. P. D.

I read this on my Kindle, but I expect it's also available in print.

This is a Kindle book, with TTS enabled, and currently $3.99, and worth the price many times over!

I am emphatically not a military expert of any kind, and have only a passing acquaintance with Roman military history. I admit this, because, despite my obvious limitations, I thoroughly enjoyed this impressive book. I cannot verify the accuracy of the research obviously done, but it rings true, and from what I *have* read, I strongly suspect the research and the portrayal of Roman military life is right on target.

One of my first thoughts while reading this book was that military life, in any age, in any army, has many things in common. This is demonstrated in so many ways throughout the book, from the Roman version of boot camp, to the soldiers' complaints about food, officers, lack of leave time, and boredom when not fighting. Although this is the story of a particular army during a specific period, the author focuses on several characters and develops them with care. Most of his major characters are not famous men, though a few famous men do make cameo appearances. His concern is with one soldier and his friends, and he follows their careers, and their lives over several years. Pullus, the main character is well drawn, and we come to know him as not just a soldier, but a human being with doubts, concerns, and attachments that shape his life as much, if not more, than his military life.

One of the things I appreciate most about this book is that it tells the story of Caesar's Gallic campaigns in a way that made them "real" and comprehensible to me as nothing else has. I've read the Commentaries, and I've read non fiction histories of these campaigns ...but I never got a real sense of what happened, in terms that even I, a non expert, could understand until I read this book. This alone would have made me give it 5 stars, but it is a good story, well told. The writing is straightforward, with few embellishments, but it is exactly right for this book. The subject matter has more than enough drama, and the author does justice to it and presents great events in a way that does not reduced them in scope, yet gives them immediacy and relevance to anyone willing to immerse him/herself in this long, but deeply satisfying book.

Valete bene!

For next year holidays I suggest all Novaromans to think about the
possibility of programming a week or 2 in Romania in the second half of
August for the ancient Roman festival held in COSTANTzA
( ancient Greek and Roman city port of TOMIS) just after mid-August, from
17 to 19 August.

This an automatic translation into english (from romanian language, and
with a few corrections) of the Festival's program taken from a newspaper of
Constanta (the romanian port on the Black sea).

Those who will decide to come can write me for their transit in Bucarest,

Subject: Last call for Grammatica Latina class
A. Tullia Scholastica quiritibus, sociis, peregrinisque bonae voluntatis
S.P.D.

The Grammatica Latina I class will begin in a little over a week, so
this will be my last reminder. Unless one lives near a college or
university which teaches Latin and whose bookstore stocks either the Sixth
or Seventh Edition of Wheelock¹s Latin, it is getting late to obtain the
text in time for the beginning of the course. We shall begin on August
27th, and present the first assignment the following Monday. It is highly
advisable to have the text by then, especially since we do not allow
registration until the students have confirmed to our satisfaction that they
do in fact possess a copy of the text. The text is necessary for the
homework, so registration will close once the first assignment is due.

The Grammatica Latina I course covers the first 22 lessons of the
Wheelock text, evenly divided into two semesters. This popular text is
rather traditional, so we use a fairly traditional method involving
memorization of vocabulary and grammatical forms, but enhance this with more
modern methods as the students learn more and become able to absorb Latin by
other means. There is weekly written homework, which is corrected but not
graded, and an examination at the end of each semester.

There is still time to register for this course, though it is growing
short. There is a longer lead time for the Sermo Latinus courses, which
produce fluency in reading, writing, and speaking Latin. They are quite
effective, but in my experience work best for those who already know the
basics of Latin. These use the Desessard Assimil text, now available only
in Italian / Latin from Assimil in Italy; we provide a translation of the
vernacular portion of the text for those who do not read Italian. The
accelerated class, which will begin on September 17th, has a new lesson
every alternate day; the slower Sermo Latinus I course (which will begin a
week later, on September 24th) has a new lesson every third day. Both have
written assignments after every seventh lesson, and periodic examinations.
There are two exams in Sermo I, and four in the accelerated class, Sermo
Combined (I & II).

If anyone would like to take any of our courses, he or she should
contact me directly. The Wheelock text is available from their own website
or from Amazon as well as college (and other) bookstores; the Desessard
Assimil text, le Latin sans Peine / il Latino senza Sforzo apparently is
available only from Assimil in Italy. The site is entirely in Italian, but
Avitus has provided me with a Latin translation, which I can then translate
for anyone who requires such assistance.

C. Maria Caeca
