Subject: IRS Interview
Avete Omnes,

Today was the phone interview with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This, of course, was due to our organization being referred to audit.
A couple of weeks ago, I had sent over 250 pages worth of
documentation as requested by the IRS. The agent reviewed the
documentation and for the past hour interviewed me over the phone with
questions on a variety of topics related to the complaint that was
filed as well as questions regarding the history of the organization,
how we conduct elections, how new members come to the organization,
the tax system we have in place. I answered every question asked.

After about an hour on the phone he stated that he has no problems
closing the audit for the organization. That it is clear that we hold
board meetings, that the membership are notified regards to the
meetings and that we hold elections. He will prepare his report
within 2 weeks to go to his supervisor for signature. Then a letter
will be mailed to me confirming that the audit of Nova Roma is over,
unless if his supervisor has any questions.

As soon as I receive the letter I will make sure it is scanned and put
on the website.

The one compliment he clearly gave to Nova Roma, the IRS agent, was
our transparency. He stated it is clear that if anyone had any
questions on what the Board of Directors met on, that it can be found
easily on the website. He said that the complaint that was filed to
us was shown to be without merit given the transparency. To this I
give sincere thanks to Lentulus and the others who keep our website
updated!

What a wonderful wonderful day!

Respectfully,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul of Nova Roma

Congratulations on the successful outcome with the IRS. Indeed a wonderful day.

Having proved the case, no doubt we will be in much greater standing with the IRS in the future, and they will be amenable to requests we might make.

Presumably they will take a less favourable line with whoever brought us to their attention .

Salvete omnes!
Hello everyone, and a special greeting to our newest citizen Lucia Maria Silvana.

Welcome Silvana. You are now a citizen of the Nova Roma Republic, a very real and tangible community spread across the globe who are creating in our everyday lives the real qualities of ancient Rome.

By adopting your new name you become part of our society, and you will come to feel that your Roman name is as much, if not more of your personality, as your name in the macronational world.

Please help us to welcome you and guide you in your future progress by telling us a little more about yourself. Here are some questions to help you introduce yourself:-

--What led you to us, and why did you choose to become a citizen of Nova Roma?

--What do you hope to gain from joining this organization?

--What books or other information have you read about the ancient Roman World?

--What are your three main areas of interest in the study of the ancient times?

--What skills, training, or historical background do you bring to Nova Roma associated with this area of history?

These questions are designed to assist you in introducing yourself, if you wish to, so that we, the older citizens, can get to know you a little better in a shorter length of time.

As well as being a member of this mailing list, you should also use your Provincial mailing list to make contact with other citizens in your own locality. It is only by meeting and taking part that you can experience the full benefits of citizenship.

But for now, just be welcome, - and over to you to tell us something about yourself.

Vale bene!

Salvete, Omnes!

This is a little random, but I heard a great interview on NPR with a doctor who is studying what is colloquially called near-death experiences, but which he calls after-death experiences. I didn't realize that there were such studies producing such concrete results. I found it fascinating and heartening, and for those who are interested, I strongly recommend it.

Here's the link to the radio program: http://www.npr.org/2013/02/21/172495667/resuscitation-experiences-and-erasing-death

Salve,

As your significant attorney has no doubt oft reminded you, lawyer shows on TV were and remain entertainment, not reality.    As an attorney, I make it a point not to watch lawyer shows.    I yell at the TV too much, and it annoys my wife.    I suppose the same could be said of police officers and cop shows.   My least favorite lawyer show was JAG.    I was an Army JAG officer for 22 years.   I never flew a jet, commanded infantry troops, or accompanied a specials ops team behind enemy lines.

Be careful with Shakespeare's alleged comment about lawyers.   It is not what most think it is.   In my experience, those who complain most bitterly about lawyers sure love their lawyers when they are in trouble.  Ces't la vie.

You know I wonder if it would be easy to create a calendar on the Wiki for
meetings and a way to track yearly how many provinces have meetings, a sort
of friendly competition in a way. It would also be a great way to show new

Marcius Quadratus SPD,

A routine I've personally experienced regarding extra-circular activities is as follows:
Meet twice a week on Wednesdays & Saturdays at 7:30pm.
Create five groups that rotate/share the responsibility of preparing for the meetings.
Meet for ALL DAY MEETINGS every 5th week for the first 2 to 4 years.
Meet for ALL DAY MEETINGS every 4th week for the remaining years.
Meet for THREE DAY MEETINGS twice a year.
Hold an all night vigil twice a year (children are present).

Testis ego sum huius formulae operantur propter perquam prospere organizationem.
I've witnessed this formula work for an extremely successful organization.

Valete,

Regular in-person meetings are vital.  Such activity would foster a sense of community.  Growth would follow.

Salvete omnibus in foro!

Mercurius, who gazes upon my lararium, sent me a good omen today. In contemplating this, I recalled something that happened about ten years ago.

My late wife was an elementary school teacher. Her third grade class was studying mythology and I was invited in to talk about Hermes.

While Apollo is often depicted with a lyre, it was actually the precocious Hermes who, as an infant, invented that instrument. He borrowed a turtle shell and added the strings. Then he offended Apollo and as punishment had to turn over the lyre to him. An ex-colleague of mine had a large turtle shell which I borrowed and into which I inserted a wooden 7-string lyre. I brought this to the class, played some melodies, and told them the story of how it was really invented by me but that I was forced give it to my brother. After some stories about the rest of my immortal family, the bubble was burst with one question from an 8-year-old.

Q: Are you a god?

A: If I were really a god, I wouldn't be wearing bi-focals.

Salve et salvete;

As many are aware, I had some personal and family ordeals with which
to deal the past few years.

One of the things that has suffered has been my writing...

I am once again penning verse, short bits, but ramping up to efforts
as in the past.

A little one from today...

There comes a time in ev'ry life
When warp and weft are badly worn
The threads of Life are frayed and thin
A gauzy mesh, not canvas strong

From cares and strife, from ills and hurt
These take a shock, absorb the blows
When all seems lost, we must take heart
Collect them all and spin anew

write your own prose or poetry, the story you save is your own.

Publius Annæus Constantinus Placidus omnibus civibus S.P.D.

I am greatly pleased to announce that, during the upcoming Ludi Novi
Romani, I will be setting up, organizing and managing a Virtual Chariot
Race, according to the following rules.

1. The Race is open to all citizens of Nova Roma, including the current
members of the Cohors Ædilicia.

2. The minimum number of entries required to start the Race is 12
chariots; the maximum amount is 16. (It would be great to actually have
not more and not less than 16 entries, but of course I cannot control
that.)

3. Each citizen may enter a maximum of two chariots by sending an e-mail
to me at <ugo DOT coppola AT tin DOT it message and DO NOT post your entries on the main NR list, otherwise you
shall be disqualified.

4. Each chariot entry should include the following:

A. Your name in Nova Roma;
B. The name of your driver;
C. The name of your chariot;
D. Your tactics for the Quarterfinals and Semifinals;
E. Your tactics for the Final;
F. The name of your "factio" or team: Russata, Albata, Præsina, Veneta.

Please feel free to add descriptions to points B and C. Tactics to be
chosen for points D and E may be found on the "Regulae ludorum" NR Wiki
page (http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Regulae_ludorum#Circenses_Rules).
Please enter only one letter in points D and E.

5. Dirty actions will NOT be allowed, although I cannot rule out the
possibility of accidents happening to chariots and drivers. However, all
drivers will be alive at the end of the Race. :-)

I am looking forward to your entries. Have a great race, everyone!

Optime valete omnes,

Cn. Lentulus quaestor, pontifex Quiritibus s. p. d.

My fellow citizens: 15 years ago, today, on pridie Kal. Mar., a day before March 1st, the declaration of Nova Roma was signed by our patres patriae, M. Cassius and Fl. Vedius.

With the rising of the Sun, morning, the next day, Nova Roma was born.

Tomorrow it is Concordialia, the Birthday of Nova Roma! Let's spend tomorrow with celebrations, anywhere we live, anything we do, let's do it for Nova Roma, in honor of Nova Roma!

Lit a candle this night, and read our Declaration, pray for Nova Roma and let's unite ourselves in one big prayer: Long live Nova Roma!

Vivat Nova Roma annorum 15!

------------------------------------------------------------------
Declaration

We, the Senate and People of New Rome, in order to restore the foundations of Western civilization, declare the founding of Nova Roma
as a sovereign nation. We manifest Nova Roma as an independent world
nation and republic, with its own legal constitution and lawful
government, with all international rights and responsibilities that such
status carries.
As a sovereign nation Nova Roma makes the following claim to various international territories and rights:
We acknowledge ancient Roman territory to be our cultural and
religious homeland, and claim historical rights to all sites and
territories which were under the direct control or administration of the
ancient Roman Republic and Empire between 753 BCE and 395 CE.
We recognize the modern political realities which make the
restoration of such ancient lands to us impossible. Therefore we limit
our active territorial claim to an amount of land at least equal to that
held by the sovereign state of Vatican City; 108 contiguous acres. On
this land a world capital for the administration of our culture will be
founded in the form of a Forum Romanum. The exact site for this New
Roman governmental and spiritual capital is to be determined.
Further, in order that our world presence may be established,
Nova Roma claims our physical territory to be extant and manifest
through those places that our state, citizens, and religious
organizations may physically own, occupy, and maintain throughout the
world. These territories shall exist in a status of dual sovereignty,
being under the cultural and spiritual administration of Nova Roma, even
as they remain under the civil dominion and laws of other hosting
nations. Our pledge is to embody a benign and beneficial cultural and
spiritual influence throughout all societies, while remaining
politically neutral and lawful in action.
Nova Roma also claims temporary dual sovereignty over all other
sites where the gods and goddesses of ancient Rome shall be worshiped by
our citizens, to preserve our cultural and spiritual unity. This dual
sovereignty shall be administered by the People directly and shall last
only for the duration of religious ceremonies and rites. In this way we
shall remain one culture and nation, even as we exist throughout other
world countries.
Citizenship in Nova Roma is open to people of all nationalities
and races. The express purpose of our nation is to promote international
understanding and cooperation through the preservation of our common
classical foundation, and to breathe new life and honor into all Western
Civilization through the restoration of ancient Piety, Virtue, and
Civilitas.
We, the citizens and Senate of New Rome hereby formally renounce,
eternally and without exception, the use of force, rebellion, coercion,
or intimidation in the pursuit of our international status and claims.
We strive to exist as a lawful, peaceful and benign nation, in accord
with the principles acknowledged and shared by the world community.
Signed this day on behalf of the Senate and People of the New Rome:
prid. Kal. Mar. ‡, Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c.
Fl. Vedius Germanicus, Consul
M. Cassius Iulianus, Consul

Unfortunately, I've lost the pertinent link, but, if you would like to have
a real treat, there is a video on YouTube where Lentulus reads the
declaration in Latin, and it is gloriously beautiful. I've listened to if
often, and it still has the power to affect me deeply.

Contemplation

This, my Nova Roma.
This, my home, impervious
To , place to boundaries;
Drawing together from
Many cultures, many native
Tongues: each with a vision,
Each vision connected: separate:
Each personal ideal
Creating imperatives that must
Mesh to become one
To form something unique; each citizen
A brick in an edifice always
Being built; changing yet solid:

Dea Concordia, be the mortar
That holds our bricks, keeping
Them together, strongly bonded;
Holding our patterns; making many
Into one; dreams into dream:
Energy and effort united
Making of us a structure that
Can and will withstand all tests:
Defined by its unity,
Celebrating each living brick
And always mindful that it is you,
Concordia, that holds and keeps
This, my Nova Roma safe
For all of us.
