I found a Stephen Saylor book I didn't know about! I happened to be on
Audible.com looking for something entirely unrelated, and there it was! It
is Rubicon, by Stephen Saylor, and it is also now mine! I'll read it just
as soon as I finish the 2nd book in Robert Johnson's fictionalized biography
of Pompey.

Salvete Omnes!

I have just finished the 2nd in the 3 volume fictionalized biography of
Pompey by Robert Johnson. Before I review it anywhere, though ... I have a
question. It has always been my understanding that the name Pompey is an
Anglicization of the Roman name Pompeius. I have no idea how it got created
or by whom, but as far as I know, it isn't Latin, and would never have been
used by any Roman.

However, in case I'm wrong, I'd like the instruction of those (and there are
many, here) wiser than I about such things. I'd prefer not to make a fool
of myself through ignorance.

ATS:  That it is.

I have no idea how it got created
or by whom, but as far as I know, it isn't Latin, and would never have been
used by any Roman.

ATS:  Not sure what you are driving at here…Pompey certainly is not Latin, and would not have been used by any Roman [not to mention that y occurred only in Greek-derived words], but Pompejus / Pompeius [the medial i is consonantal] certainly is Latin, and as a nomen, was used by several Romans.  Many Roman (and Greek) names are Anglicized by dropping the case-ending or changing it; Horatius becomes Horace, Martialis becomes Martial, Vergilius becomes Vergil, Ovidius becomes Ovid.  These and other Roman names appear differently in other languages; if I am not mistaken, Tacitus stays put in English, but becomes Tacite in French, and Ovid becomes Ovide.  German also changes these names although German (being a civilized Indo-European language) is equipped with declensions, whose endings, however, do not resemble those of Latin or Greek (or Sanskrit…).

However, in case I'm wrong, I'd like the instruction of those (and there are
many, here) wiser than I about such things. I'd prefer not to make a fool
of myself through ignorance.

ATS:  You are not ignorant.  Pompéjus (or rather, in agreement, Pompéja) was the name of a Roman gens which contributed many notable persons.  Pompey is an Anglicization thereof, supposedly facilitating transfer into the grammar-deprived English language.  One wonders how these names might be rendered in languages even more lacking in grammar than is English.

Omnibus in Foro S. P. D.

I have been indulging myself in a Stephen Saylor extravaganza over the last
several days. I have read four books, and I recommend all of them! Granted,
this is historical fiction, not an academic dissertation. However, the
author does excellent research as far as I can tell, and he knows how to
tell a great story. Three of these books deal with Julius Caesar's civil
war. They cover the period between his crossing of the Rubicon, and his
final triumphant entrance into Rome. They should be read in the following
order.

1. Rubicon
2. Last Seen In Massilia
3. A Mist Of Prophecies.

The fourth book is a collection of short stories that fill in the gaps
between the longer books. If you have followed the adventures of Gordianus
the Finder, then you will probably enjoy this collection. It's called A
Gladiator Dies Only Once. The other collection of short stories, the Venus
throw, is also very good, and serves the same purpose. I got all of these
books from audible.com. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Salve et Salvete;

I am creeping back from what has been an emotionally devastating year thus far.

As those who've known me longest are aware, I am a cat person, and am also very sentimental about family and friends.  Machinatrix and I never had children, so the cats have been a big repository of our affection and feelings.  We do have wonderful nieces and nephews, but the distance has been too great to see them with any good frequency.  They send pictures, especially of y great nephew and great nieces, but visits are definitely better.

Our cats have never been a substitute for human family and friends, but they are a wonderful addition to our lives. They are creatures of pure spirit, unburdened by the curse of reason. They give affection without envy. They have needs without wanting. They are pedagogs without dogma...and they take up real estate in your heart bigger than you realize while you watch them play, sleep, eat, live...

My little friend Chesapeake Bandylegs the Hunter, calling name Chessie Bear, who slept by my side every night, died of a heart attack a couple of days after my last message to you in January, my friends of Nova Roma.  She'd been by my side for just over 1/5th of my life thus far.

In February, my mom had a fall and broke her cheek bone, me being half a day away by car.  Also, a manager at the store for whom I'd developed a deep and abiding respect passed suddenly.  Bob was a good man, attended his burial at Arlington at the beginning of June.

Then in March, my great aunt Anna Maria passed away.  She was definitely part of the granite in my life's foundations.  Nothing worked for Auntie Anit except the unvarnished truth of life.

In April, we lost my great uncle Albert, who was a WW2 veteran, badly wounded, but rebuilt himself (with help) and built a strong life and family.  Another of my plain spoken elders, but always so joy filled.

May seemed to be a reprieve, went to Norwich University in Vermont, my alma mater. I walked across the stage and received my bachelor's degree, 35 years after the rest of my class.  My mom and 2 good friends from my college days were there with my wife and me.

But at the end of May, Hildiekatt Halfshadow the Harrier, calling name Hildie, was taken ill.  On June 8th, we had to do the Final Kindness.  She had intestinal Lymphoma, which is what caused her sister Silver Kestrel the Ransacker's (Kessie) death just 2 years ago.

These Passings and others of close family friends, compounded on supporting my wife in uprooting from our comfortable life in northern Illinois and moving to southern Maryland.  She has rejoined the work force (civilian engineer with the US Navy) after being out 15 years dealing with PTSD and other effects of service connected disabilities. All this had an emotional toll that just kept building up and I fear I had a bit of inner collapse in some ways.  I have not kept up a lot of correspondence, save through my main FB page, put on a braver face there than I have truly felt.  It is, as my counselor called it, creative procrastination and distraction.

I did manage to publish a book of gnomic poetry (450 verses) in December before the gush of inner mush welled up.

These are the latest verses in my 2nd book of gnomic poetry.

Within my heart there is a place
Reserved for pets, my furry friends
Tis unrealized how large it is
Until they ail and need your help

Within the death of Kin or Kith
Or even that of furry friend
There comes a time of deepest thought
To meaning find of them to us

I've donated quite a bit in Kessie, Hildie and Chessie's memory to cat rescues this year.

Salve Venator!

I am very saddened to hear the depth and range of the misfortunes that have plagued you and your family this year. Of course, I was aware of some of the tragedies but this message lays out much more than I ever imagined. Hearing of this makes me regret all the more the fact that my wife was not ready to make the move from Bethel, Alaska back to Maryland where I had a great job offer in Leonardtown and an apartment lined up in California, not far from you and your wife. I will offer a blot with prayers and mead to a few of the Aesir and Vanir that they might support you and guide you along your journey with the hope that sweeter and brighter days will soon come to you.

I do hope you will reconsider your role in the Senate. I believe we can all understand that family and other aspects of life take priority and may limit involvement in Nova Roma. Events sometimes overwhelm us and limit participation. But I do hope you can find the strength to remain on the Board. Your voice in the Senate is valuable and instructive. We need you as a Senator.

Salvete omnes!

I am a relative new comer to our res publica (though I actually became a member a year ago, my higher education at university has forced my attention on work, but things have become more manageable now) and would like to be a virtues citizen whom does his duty and  participates in voting. I have spent time learning the voting system but am unable to find a timetable for elections throughout the year.

If a fellow citizen could aid me in this endeavour it would be deeply appreciated.

Usually, our elections are held in November of each year, but there will be lots of notice, and calls for candidates and such information when the time comes.  It is good to see a citizen who is eager to perform the responsibilities of citizenship!

Yesterday I re-visited the P(B)rocolitia  Mithraeum near Hadrian's Wall which is luckily within reasonable distance from my house. I have made many visits to this Mithraic Temple and have noticed that more and more visitors are kneeling and then leaving coins on each altar stone.
I am wondering if we are seeing a return to the old Gods & Goddesses who have never actually left us??

Your pictures didn’t show up on the list because attachments are not allowed on the Main List.  However, if you use Facebook, we have a group there where you would be welcome to share them, and many of our citizens are also in that group.  I don’t have a direct link to the FB group, but if you go to Facebook and do a Search on Nova Roma, you should be able to find it quickly and easily.

That is a shame, and we will need to look at the reason.

ATS:  A few years ago the settings on the ML were changed, and since then have not allowed attachments.  The praetores may be able to change them back.  However, in those days when we had a high volume of posts on the ML, and some attachments were gigantic, that appeared not to be a good idea.  It's worth considering now, however, since the volume is far less than it used to be.

For those of us not on Facebook, it might be a better idea to post the pictures on Britannia or some other list which allows attachments.

BTW, when we were at the Conventiculum in Britain a few years ago, one of us, (Astur, I believe) put some coins on the altar of the Mithraeum, which a little brat took for himself.  Perhaps he also robs the church collection plate.  I would have liked to have found his parents and provided them with some relevant instruction.

However, you are free to post pictures in the Britannia list, so why not try there.

ATS:  Good idea.

We experienced a similar downtime last year. The server went offline because Fredrik had a power outage. There have been no changes to the server in the past two weeks on my end so I expect that something has happened in Sweden. I emailed Fredrik - hopefully he will respond soon.

Salvete omnes,

I back at home since last Saturday but still forbidden to drive while recovering from the surgery I had last week. The recovery is going well even if slowly but finally I can sit for a little longer so I thought I could use some of that computer time to share with you all the photos I took at Mérida recently.

Mérida was founded by Augustus with veterans from Legio X Gemina and Legio V Alaudae with the name of Augusta Emerita. The city was the capital of Provincia Lusitania, roughly modern Portugal, and it is in Spain near the border with Portugal.

In the summer has many Roman related activities including gladiators shows in the Roman amphitheater and theater plays in the Roman theater. I couldn't go to either but could see some Gladiators reenactors training in the amphitheater.

I could only spent part of a day in Mérida so I only visit the amphitheater and theater ruins, the Roman Art museum  and a villa called Villa Mitreo.

The amphitheater and the theater are side by side and well preserved for ruins. I got the impression the amphitheater to be a little smaller than the one in Italica, also in Spain, but nevertheless more than well deserved the visit.

You can see the photos and a small video of the gladiators training at the following link:

Subject: Augusta Emerita - Theater
Salvete omnes,

The theater is also in relative good shape and it is used to stage plays in the summer. For the several advertises I saw it looked to be a different play each weekend, on Friday and Saturday nights, and they are, this year at least, mainly ancient plays or adaptations of ancient texts with some more modern ones. There was one that called my attention that was a modern adaptation of the Iliad that was to be staged in Greek with Spanish subtitles, what I wouldn't give to be sit in a theater build in the times of Augustus and watching a play in Greek about Achilles and Troy.

The fact that the theater is being used to stage plays made it not possible to access all theater grounds mainly the stage and actor entrances and that was the only downside.

The theater it self seem to be dedicated to Mater Ceres with her statue in center position.

Behind the theater there was garden surrounded by a portico with statues of Augustus, Tiberius and Drusus, a well and latrines in the back of the garden and portico.

In the late empire some privatus build a house in the grounds of the garden, house called House Balisitca due its paintings in the wall which was thought to represent the Christian Apostles but now is believed to be representation of the house serfs as it was custom of the time.

I must confess it was great to be able to sit in a theater where so many generations of Romans watched theater plays through so many centuries.

The photos of the theater and gardens can be seen at:
