I just found a very nice site, with interesting articles about Rome and the
ancient world, so I thought I'd share the link, in case some of you haven't
discovered this, yet.

Avete omnes,

Soon election season will be upon us.  If you wish to have your vote count more strongly in the tribes and centuries you need to pay the tax.  Over the next two weeks is the final Window in order for each citizens to be placed in assidui status and thusly in a rural tribe and in one of the 5 classes for the comitia centuriata.

Also, If you are in a lower class (5th or 4th class) you can purchase placement in the higher (and thusly less populated) centuries.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to respond...or contact me privately @ robert.woolwine@...

Ave Sodalis mi,
I'd like to know how much I've to pay in order to be regular citizen in N.R.; I'm a new citizen and I depend from the dear friend Lentulus, cause I live in Italy. I've no idea what to do. Please, tell me how much and where may I pay ( bank draft or card ) and if may I have an invoice or not.
Thank you very much in advance.

You would pay the 5th class rate which is $9.68.

You also would pay the 5th class amount.  But in the US the amount is $9.58.

Salve Sulla Censor et Salvete omnes!

If I remember correctly, a citizen can go to their page on the Album Civium, and they will find a link to pay their taxes.  Does that still work, has it changed, or am I misremembering?

In compliance of the Lex Cornelia de classibus et ordine equestri I have begun sending some requests for those citizens who meet the qualifications to join the Ordo.  They have 30 days to respond to the request.  If there is no response received I will consider that a rejection of the offer, since there must be an acceptance of the invitation to join.

Salve!

Pontifex, thank you for the warm welcome, it is very nice to be home and to have time to dedicate to Nova Roma.

I could not agree with you more. The wiki is one of the greatest online assets of NR. I also believe we have only just scratched the surface of what we can build in regards to our wiki and the online presence of the res publica. I do believe an online journal would only further promote the development of well constructed wiki pages. In fact, I can imagine a single well crafted manuscript in our journal lending itself to the improvement of multiple wiki pages.

If I may interject with a few additional comments.

After watching NR grow, witnessing its triumphs and failures, I think, as a private citizen, we are at somewhat of a cross roads. After pondering the future for sometime I'm convinced that at least part of our future should exist in promoting credible academic works. In doing this we would establish ourselves a respected academic organization where citizen and non-citizen can come and learn about ancient Roman culture. In doing so we will raise a new generation of citizens and retain current citizens and grow our respublica. I believe we have the core human resources to accomplish this, its a matter of building the infrastructure.

So what is this infrastructure? Part of it is expanding the wiki. That's our main face to the world. Unfortunately, very few posts have been made on the wiki list lately. Certainly some renewed vigor is needed. How could we encourage this further development? Well the journal mentioned could assist in driving research and academic activity. I suspect there may be a synergistic effect.

However, the more I think about this, the more I wonder if a journal alone is enough. Ultimately, I think we will need more. Why not a centralized NR place of education. It was a shame to see the Academia Thules close. It approach such an aim. Yet, still it left many things to be desired. What if we had a NR endorsed and operated Academia. We would offer automated online courses. The technology exists to make this happen. I've been part of such courses at multiple universities. From within the infrastructure of the Academia the online journal would exist. Maybe some courses would require one to publish. Thus, the academia proposed would educate, promote research and also be a forum of cross disciplinary discussion, bringing the expertise of the Sodalitas together under one virtual roof.

If we pulled this off we would have a self propagating academic engine within our community. The wiki would benefit, the journal would benefit, the cultus deorum would benefit, politics would benefit. More people would learn about Rome, and our citizenship and tax income would grow. All of these individual components are stronger together than in isolation. They seem to naturally fit together.

Ancient Roman culture spread throughout the ancient world behind the vanguard of the legions. Maybe such an academia could form the vanguard of the 21st century. Lets build an Academia which has within it an academic journal.

Thoughts?

Salvete omnes!

I've been silent on the forum for quite some time. However, I've been following things at a distance. Please give me a moment to reintroduce myself.

I've been around Nova Roma for over ten years. I've largely grown up as a citizen having spent most of my adult life in Nova Roma. When I first became a citizen I had an interest in Rome. However, by holding citizenship in our res publica I have found a true love for Rome. It has inspired over a decade of learning and related formal academic activity. Nova Roma inspired a love and passion for all things Roman. I hope it will always continue to do so. I largely thank Nova Roma for igniting this passion. I hope many of you reading this share similar sentiments.

From early on I have realized that one of the greatest resources we have as Nova Romans are our fellow citizens. I've always been amazed by the vast array of knowledge held by many of our citizens. Just look at our wiki and list archives! What a treasure trove of information! I think this and our many other works stand as testament to the incredible knowledge many of our citizens possess.

I'm wondering if we could do more to tap this knowledge. To preserve current knowledge. To inspire the acquisition of further research and the further dissemination of all Roman history and culture. I hope we could further inspire others, both citizen and non-citizen alike to learn more about Rome.  If we can do this we are only furthering the mission set by the founders of Nova Roma.

To achieve this I'm curious if any other citizens would be interested in founding a Nova Roma peer reviewed academic journal.

Pretty much all academic journals are fully digital these days. Yes, many are subscription based. But more recently (the last 10 yrs) they are free, digital and open source. I proposed our academic journal be free and digital. However, it should still be professionally published online. I have many of the resources needed to publish online in this manner. I'm more than happy to volunteer towards this ends.

This journal would be open for anyone to submit well researched, well sourced review articles or original research relating to ancient Roman history, religion or culture. Most importantly articles will need to be vetted for academic rigour and receive approval by a peer review panel which is experienced in various Roman topics eg. religion, military, law, medicine, engineering etc. I think we many have more than a few citizens who have such expertise. This peer review process would be key to establishing the academic credibility of the journal. I would also suggest opening submissions to non-citizens. This way our journal could serve as an outreach tool and also a means for dialogue with non-Nova Romans.

Ultimately, I would hope this project would further inspire Nova Romans to rediscover the culture and to find a formal outlet to gain experience in contributing in an academic manner. It would also hopefully serve to further the academic activity already going on in the res publica. Personally, I believe that the promotion of high quality academic works is essential in teasing out our ancient Roman culture, religion and our history. Maybe this project could play a role in this?

With all this said, there is no way I can succeed in launching such an ambitious project alone. In fact, I think that in order for such a project to succeed it must involve several citizens and be a community directed project. I write this message to see if others may share my desire and would be welling to dedicate some time to discussing this proposal further.

I eagerly await your thoughts and opinions!

Valete!

This is Gaius Octavius Tranquillus, I have a couple of quick questions, firstly I believe I am a paying citizen but as far as I can tell from my album page I am not placed in a tribe, I would like to know what I need to do to be placed in a tribe and have my vote count more fully in the elections. Secondly, I live in the province of America Mississippiensis, there is currently no one in the provisional government, having been in nova Roma for a while now I would like to enter into government service for my province. Any information you can give me about getting into a try and and entering into governmental service for my province would be great and much appreciated.

Welcome back to our forum, optime P. Caece, sodalis Palatine! It's good to see that you are coming back full of enthusiasm and initiatives!

As for myself, I will support your project as much as my other commitments will permit. You can count on my help and assistance. I think we should also focus on expanding and enhancing our greatest resource, the Nova Roma wiki website. There are plenty of articles which need yet to be written or need to be polished and improved. Maybe this is something we could do in parallel while creating the online journal -- or before it. What do you think?

Salve civis, libenter te! Good and reasonable question.

There are several ways to be active as a citizen. I would start by contacting your provincial govonor. You can find information about your province here: http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Provincia_(Nova_Roma)

By doing this you can become connected with citizens who live near you.

Additionally, you can join one of the many interest groups called sodalitas. More info found here: http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Sodalitas

Also search for "sodalitas" within yahoo groups. You will find some other non-official groups which may interest you.

If you are interested in the Roman Reglion join this group: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ReligioRomana/info This group is a terrific resource for those who are curious in this aspect of Roman life.

Another useful task to do is adding and improving pages on the wiki over at novaroma.org.

Most importantly, join in on the conversations here on the main list of the forum. Many opportunities for further involvement come up here. It looks like you are already on track.

Nova Roma is very young. We are still growing. If you have an idea which you think will enhance our community go out and do it! I'm currently getting together a few projects of my own and other citizens are doing the same. It are these citizen driven projects which build our community!

Let me know if you have any other questions! Pleasure to meet you!

This is an unofficial opinion, my personal experience.
Benefits to being a Nova Roma Quirite (citizen) is I get to practice Roman ways, both modern & ancient; people share Roman food recipes; I get to experience freedom of religion with Roman tradition, e.g., Mars, agriculture etc; they teach as well we speak Latin; periodically Nova Roma offers items i.e. calendars etc; there are discussions debates elections ludi (games) with an ancient Roman flair or spirit; we learn about our Roman forefathers - remember, there's two sides to every story (think Caligula, Nero).
I would suggest more discussions about Roman architecture, real estate development.
Being a purist, I feel we should be called eRoma (Electric Rome) because technically, "New Rome" or "Nova Roma" already exists from the time period 1,083 a.u.c. (330 a.D.) during Roman Emperor Constantine in the "Eastern Roman" empire surrounding the Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia in Constantinople (Istanbul).
Also, Nova Roma has a very useful website.
Most importantly, my fellow Romans herein really care about our Roman culture, so much in my case, that I attended in full Augustus Caesar form with toga, a friend's beach side wedding. The pastor asked me "what is this" to which I replied, I'M A ROMAN (it's part of freedom of religion & speech USA 2nd Amendment) and he just smiled and went on with his business... it helps that I believe I'm a descendant of Mars, and my friend a descendant of Apollo.
Salvete,
Tiberius Marcius Quadra

It is with great sadness that I remember all citizens and friends of Nova Roma that we observe the second day of the state mourning for the depart of our esteemed Ti. Galerius Paulinus.

Today the funus censorium ritual will be held.

I would like to remember all Ti. Galerius Paulinus services as Magistrate of Nova Roma, indeed he served as:
TWICE Quaestor,
THREE times Tribunus Plebis,
Praetor,
Consul,
TWICE Censor,
Senator,
Province governor for many years.

Without counting all his service outside the scope of Nova Roma offices. Besides all service Paulinus was a good man, a good Roman and friend to many in Nova Roma. We all miss him deeply.

I ask all citizens and friends of Nova Roma to honor the memory and your prays for Ti. Galerius Paulinus.

Cn. Cornelius Lentulus pontifex C. Aemilio Crasso et St. Corneliae Aeterniae consulibus, senatui populoque Novo Romano S. P. D.

Consules, Senatores, Quirites!

I report you that I have fulfilled my very sad duty and I have buried Censorial Senator Ti. Galerius Paulinus for Nova Roma. The ceremony was attended by me and by T. Popillia Laenas, who assisted me as popa during the ceremony. I know, Quirites, I know how sad is that this is how Nova Roma had to say goodbye forever to our Paulinus, it is so sad that we could not assemble in great numbers for the funeral, which was, by all means, let's face it, only a symbolic action. But I do believe, Quirites, that it mattered. It mattered to the Gods, it mattered to the Divine Genius of Nova Roma, it mattered to the immortal soul of Paulinus, it mattered to our Roman ancestors who are watching upon us and who are glad to see however small is what we can do currently, we still try to do things in the proper way, as our circumstances allow. At the moment, it would have been absolutely impossible to assemble in any great numbers for such a funeral ceremony. But we had to do it, it was the right thing, the Roman thing to do. So we can now proudly say: Nova Roma said official goodbye to Paulinus in the Roman way, even if symbolically, even if in tiny, primitive dimensions. But it WAS his Roman funeral, a funus censorium, the greatest award to any Roman, and Nova Roma also financed part of his real funeral, so our little ceremony today, together with the donation to his actual physical funeral, constitute a real, true, meaningful way to have our own Roman funus censorium for the dear late Ti. Paulinus.

On a personal note: it was a psychically very demanding thing to do, and a very sad day for me that I had to do this, but I feel also honored that I could say goodbye to Paulinus on behalf of the entire Nova Roman community, representing the consuls.

My report follows:

REPORT ON THE NOVA ROMAN CENSORIAL STATE FUNERAL OF TI. GALERIUS PAULINUS

Since the actual burial of the body happened earlier, now I had to rely on symbolism when conducting the funeral of Ti. Paulinus. A printed image of Paulinus substituted his body during the ceremony.

BEFORE THE CEREMONY: REPRESENTING THE CONSULS

Before we would do anything, I requested the gods to accept me as a substitution and as a representative of the consules C. Aemilius and Sta. Cornelia. The consules are the ones who actually offer this funerary ceremony, and what I do they are doing through my person.

Huius rei ergo macte hoc ture estote fitote volentes propitii
consulibus C. Aemilio Crasso et Sta. Cornaliae Valerianae Iulianae Aeterniae,
rei publicae Novae Romanae,
mihi, domo, familiae.

"Gods Immortal,
the consuls and I ask you
that you accept me Cn. Cornelius Lentulus pontifex
as the performer of the funus censorium,
in place of the consules themselves,
C. Aemilius Crassus and Sta. Cornalia Valeriana Iuliana Aeternia.
For the sake of this be you blessed benevolent and propitious by this incense
to the consules C. Aemilius Crassus and Sta. Cornalia Valeriana Iuliana Aeternia,
to the Nova Roman Republic,
to me, to my household and to my family."

After this incense sacrifice, the sacred preparations for the funeral started.

THE PREPARATIONS

I. LAMENTATIO

I had to substitute the mourner choir. For a couple of minutes, I was calling on Ti. Galerius Paulinus by his Roman name, once or twice using his native USA name, Timothy Paul Gallagher, too. I applied ritual cry, as it is required at this part of the ceremony, lamenting and wailing in a ceremonial, formular way.

II. PURIFICATION

The image was symbolically washed (I poured some drops of water on it), anointed, and placed on the ground. I recited the prayer of purification.

III. CENSORIAL PROCESSION

I elevated the image of Paulinus from the ground, and, covered by a Nova Roma flag, I went around in three circles, while crying the following words: "Ti. Galerius Paulinus, vir censorius, ad funus censorium fertur." Then I placed the image of Paulinus on my home altar.

IV. LAUDATIO FUNEBRIS

This is the most famous element of Roman funerals, the eulogy: funeral oration or funerary praises. I first read my own speech aloud, then I read the speeches of the consuls, then, the speeches of the praetors and censors, and then all farewell messages or speeches that were sent to me or to the Main List during September. You can read here all the texts that I have read aloud as Laudatio Funebris for Ti. Paulinus:

After I have finished reading aloud the speeches and messages, I started the funerary sacrifice and the symbolic cremation-burial.

THE FUNERAL

I recited the following prayers in front of the image of Ti. Galerius Paulinus, covered by Nova Roman flag:

Favete linguis!

"Take care of your tongues!"

to his soul, to his household, to his family,
to all Nova Romans,
to us, to our households, to our families."

III.2. Sacrifice

Libum was sacrificed.

IV. CREMATIO

This was the most important part of the ceremony, but it could only happen on a symbolic level, since the corps of Ti. Paulinus had already been buried in September. We symbolically buried it by burning the image of Ti. Galerius Paulinus, used during this ceremony to represent him. First, I invoked Vesta, goddess of fire, to guide Paulinus to among his ancestors:

IV. Prayer

Vesta,
hoc thure dato te precor,
uti per hunc ignem
animam Ti. Galeri Paulini
ad Deos Manes suos adducas!

"Vesta,
by offering you this incense I ask you
that through this fire
you guide the soul of Ti. Galerius Paulinus
to among the ancestral deities."

IV. Sacrifice

Incense was sacrificed.

After Vesta had been invoked, I burned the image of Ti. Galerius Paulinus with a piece of the same sacrificial libum cake, as sacred tradition requires, which was offered to Ceres previously. After the ceremony, I placed the ashes into a beautiful little box, which I will preserve until there will be an opportunity to bury it together or next to the real remains of Ti. Galerius Paulinus.

At the end of the ceremony, the usual phrase was pronounced:

Ilicet!

"It's permitted to go."

(End of the ceremony.)

V. PIACULUM

V.1. Prayer

Iane,
Dis Pater,
Di Manes,
Lares Familiares Ti. Galeri Paulini,
Geni Ti. Galeri Paulini,
Ti. Galeri Pauline,
Ceres et Vesta,
Omnes Di Immortales quocumque nomine:
si quidquam vobis in hac caerimonia displicuit,
hoc ture et vino inferio dato veniam petimus
et vitium meum expiamus.

"Iane,
Di Manes,
Lares Familiares of Ti. Galerius Paulinus,
Genius of Ti. Galerius Paulinus,
Ti. Galerius Paulinus,
Ceres and Vesta,
All Gods Immortal by whatever name I may call you:
if anything in this ceremony was displeasing to you,
with this incense and sacrificial wine we ask forgiveness
and expiate our fault."

V.1. Sacrifice

I placed incense on the altar and poured libation of wine on the altar.

REST IN PEACE!
FAREWELL, OUR DEAR PAULINUS!

Salvete,

I would like to second the sentiments of our Pontifex Maximus. The transcript of the censorial state funeral was quite moving. Cornelius Lentulus, thank you for sharing that detailed description. A magnificat ceremony for a Roman who gave so much and was so influential to the history of our res publica.

I didn't know Galerius Paulinus well, but his accomplishments and and dedication to Nova Roma are clear upon reading the numerous stellar accounts of him. Clearly this is a Roman who has raised the bar high for those who follow in his foot steps.

Omnibus in foro S.P.D.

Before this became Veterans' Day, it was Armistice Day, and it was a solemn
celebration of the end of World War I. It was also a time set aside to
honor and remember all the war dead of all Nations, but especially those who
lost their lives during that horrific war.

As a child, we celebrated November 11th at our school in a simple but
profoundly moving manner. At 11:11 AM, taps would play over the loud
speaker system, and we would all stop what we were doing, stand with bowed
heads, and keep silence for a minute or so. Even before I understood why we
did this, I understood that what we did was important and necessary.

As I always do on this day, I offer this very beautiful and familiar poem,
in memory, honor and gratitude to all who gave their lives for their Nations
in time of war.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae

The other day, I was trying to explain to a 23 year old young man why the
original purpose of this day is so important, and should be remembered. He
couldn't understand why something that happened almost 100 years ago is
still so significant, or why we should bother about it. I explained to him,
finally that, like it or not, that global conflict not only changed the face
of war forever, but it changed society, as well, and that he and I, albeit
indirectly, are products of those changes. So, we remember, and I hope
that, in our remembering, we pray, and determine that Nations will never
embroil themselves in situations that cost the world an entire generation of
young people again.

Salvete, Quirites!

First of all, thank to all of you who commented and reflected on the report of the funeral ceremony. I hope it was meaningful and it performed the role well what we intended with this funus censorium. And thanks to all who have helped make this happen, to the members of the collegium pontificum, who supported the initiative, to the senate, which accepted it, to both consuls, who administered the process, especially to consul Crassus, who was in charge of the administration. Thanks to L. Vitellius Triarius for creating the beautiful picture of grave stone for Paulinus with my epitaph poem on it, to Popillia Laenas, who helped me during the funeral, thanks to all citizens who prayed for Paulinus, during the funeral, and finally, thanks to Nova Roma for the generous donation to the family of Paulinus, supporting his real physical funeral.

Yesterday, Paulinus was buried in the Roman way: after the Underworld Gods, Paulinus' ancestors and Ceres and Vesta had been invoked, I burned the ritual image of Ti. Galerius Paulinus with a coin to Charon, and with a piece of the same sacrificial libum cake, as sacred tradition requires, which was offered to Ceres previously. After the ceremony, I placed the ashes into a beautiful little box, which I will preserve until there will be an opportunity to bury it together or next to the real remains of Ti. Galerius Paulinus. I have already offered the box containing his symbolic Roman ashes to Paulinus' brother, his closest living family member.

After his Roman burial yesterday, now we are spending this day in quiet reflection and prayer for Paulinus. The website is still in black, our souls are still heavy, but tomorrow a new day comes, a new life begins, and we uphold the sacred red flag of Nova Roma for Paulinus, and we carry on to continue the mission he always served with honor. Let tomorrow be a renewal of our efforts to become a better Roman, and a better man.

If you haven't paid a visit to our mourning website, you can still do it today:

Why am I passionate about this project? It is because of the mission
which Nova Roma strives towards, to create a Roman culture for today.
This is something I've believed and lived for over a decade. I’m
convinced that we cannot achieve our mission without dedicated
educational outreach. Yes, Nova Roma has done this in the past. But
citizens, we can do so much more! I firmly believe that the foundation
upon which we build our culture is education.

Academia Minervalis can become a new social hub of Nova Roma, the
educational and cultural soul of our res publica. The courses the
academia will provide gives new citizens something to do besides
politics and yahoo email groups. It connects new citizens with old,
experienced with inexperienced. All of this in the name of Nova Roma and
a mutual love of Rome. Through this new hub of our community I hope that
we can reach out to the world in a new way. Recruit new citizens, and
inspire them to action. Idealistic? Yes indeed! But didn't our founders
create Nova Roma with such a mindset?

We have such talent within our ranks to make this possible. We have
citizens who are experts in Roman military history, literature,
language, politics, law, religion and more. Literally we have a bank of
knowledge on everything that could fall under the umbrella of culture. I
hope the Academia Minervalis will provide a welcoming community within
the larger Nova Roma society to those citizens who desire to share their
passions. The sodlitas are great resources. Yet, they exist in isolation
and in unorganized yahoo group archives. They have no advanced tools to
educate. I hope that the Academia Minervalis will provide a central
location where citizens of various interests can meet, exchange ideas
and build and take courses all towards furthering their own connection
with our culture and Nova Roma. I believe that this project has the
potential to provide a new outlet of expression for the sodlitas beyond
anything ever provided in Nova Roma’s history. It provides yet another
way to live as a Roman through formal education.

This is not the first academia. Some may recall that the Academia Thules
grasped at this goal and faltered. But the Academia Minervalis desires
to go much beyond what Thules attempted. This new academia’s first
primary goal is formal recognition of the Nova Roma senate. Written
directly into the founding charter of Academia Minervalis is the intent
to exist within Nova Roma under its constitution and laws. The Academia
Minervais will not be controlled by one person or one group. It has a
leadership structure designed to link it to leading Nova Roma citizens
from outside the institution and will also have regular leadership
change.

Okay, so what is Academia Minervalis exactly?

(A) It is an online school. It uses the latest in open source internet
technology to provide online courses to anyone at any time for free. It
does not have courses yet, but two are under development with more to
come. The courses contain recorded lectures, readings, assignment,
exams. Therefore, you can learn anytime you want, at your own pace
following a course syllabus. Because of the technology utilized many
exams can be graded automatically, providing instant feedback to the
learner. This is the very same software that is used by many
universities. I'm putting the finishing touches on implementing this
online system right now as the first courses are developed.

(B) Academia Minervalis also provides those citizens who want to
develop their own courses the infrastructure to so easily. Citizens
developing courses will be the lifeblood of this organization. Any
citizen can develop a course which is then reviewed by their peers and
published.

(C) Real time discussion between students and instructors is provided by
a message board operating independent of yahoo. Academia Minervalis
controls its entire infrastructure directly under its own server. You
can see our message board here: www.academiaminervalis.org/phpbb/. Why
don’t you drop by and say hello!

(D) Academia Minervalis also contains a peer reviewed academic journal
where original review articles and research will be published. This
could become a showcase for student assignments and a tool for
instructors who develop course readings.

How you can help:

I can’t make this project a success alone. I care deeply for Nova Roma,
and I believe this project can be an important part of its future. Yet,
without your passion mine will not be enough to carry this through.

(1) We need instructors to develop courses. More info at:
www.academiaminervalis.org/teach.html

(2) We need to make sure we have a solid operating structure. Help us
develop our operating procedures at:
http://www.academiaminervalis.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1&sid=5ce5a78df0d80d12fa647ce6e57f9d15
These structures will protect the organization from abuse and guarantee
that it reflects the best of Nova Roma

(3) We will need students, but not yet! We are developing the courses
right now, so stay tuned! Are you knowledgeable on a topic? Then first
help us develop a course!

I've built this project out of a love for Nova Roma. I want to see Nova
Roma grow into its next phase of development, to become known as the
premiere place to celebrate Roman culture in all its colors. With this
web site I feel like I have built an empty vessel. Without you, my
fellow Romans, Academia Minervalis is nothing but a romantic idea. So I
now go before you all, hoping that you will assist me in nurturing this
fledgling institution into something great.

Now, I leave it in your hands and look forward to your comments.

Valete!

Excellent !! This is probably the best way to do things: simply go forward and do it. I am much impressed by the setup of the website.

I can offer a course in Facultas Artis et Scientiae: Roman Engineering and Architecture. I'll sign up for that one shortly, and record a first part during the Christmas holidays. Main focus of that first course: Vitruvius.

Question: In the Literature Faculty, you propose a course on the Iliad. Why not the Odyssey ? I could do a one-hour talk on the Odyssey right now, without preparation. Care to add it ?

Keep up the good work !!

This looks like an outstanding adventure, and one that is definitely and significantly needed at this particular time in our history.  We have lost many, many great minds and citizens, due to many factors of varying degrees in our history. Hopefully, this will present an opportunity for some of them to return, as well as fueling the fire for new membership from the academic community. The potential of this project is absolutely astounding, once you sit down and ponder the possibilities.  As far as formal recognition, I would wholeheartedly support this project in the Senate. I encourage anyone willing and able to contribute their time to this endeavor to do so immediately.  The faster this thing gets up and running, the faster people will have something fresh and productive to do, instead of lurking around the Forum.  Not to mention it could lessen the frequent and often useless, unproductive political squabbling that often occurs around here for lack of anything else to do.

Omnibus in foro S. P. D.

While I find the concept of this project exciting, and would very much like to see it here, I do have some concerns.  First, I find myself somewhat uncomfortable with the way in which it was presented.  It was presented as an existing part of Nova Roma, almost ready to open its doors for business.  The approval of the Senate seemed to me to be merely an afterthought, of little, if any importance.

Now, I completely understand passion, and I completely understand and sympathize with enthusiasm. These things are much needed, and a breath of fresh air.  In fact, the larger the project, the more passion and enthusiasm are needed, because of the huge amount of effort that will be required to bring the project into full fruition.

However, to minimize or discount the role of the Senate in any major project that claims kinship with our organization, and represents itself as such is, to my mind, unwise, and verges on arrogance.  I would have thought that this would have been presented as a proposal, and that it would have first been presented to the Consuls (with full documentation, or a request for what documentation is needed) with a request to present the proposal to the Senate, and that this would have been made clear to citizens in the initial post.

I also have the same questions asked by the CFO and the Pontifex Maximus.  I have no problem with noncitizens participating in one of our projects, because such projects can and do generate interest, and attract new citizens.  However, I also think that, if this initiative is an acknowledged part of Nova Roma, a few decisions must be made.

For example, would a former citizen who has been banished for cause be allowed full access to this site?  On the surface, I can see why people might not see this as an issue, but this kind of access allows someone who, for example, is a member of an organization that the Senate has deemed hostile to Nova Roma and therefore a competing organization access not just to the courses, but to the forum, allowing that person to interact with new and potential citizens to draw them away from Nova Roma and in to their own organizations.  Yes, this sounds paranoid, and no, it isn’t. This is based on my observations of the conduct of particular individuals in other public venues.

Also, it must be understood that if this is to be a part of Nova Roma, it must not only be approved by the Senate, but accountable to the Senate in some way, on a continuous basis.

If it is to be separate from Nova roma (and I hope that is not a choice that is made), then of course, this organization has no input into the way it is run, or to whom full access is given.

Whatever happens, I wish you, Caece, the best of fortune in this, and I hope to be able to at least take a few courses, when they are ready.  Perhaps there will be other ways in which I can help, though I am not an academic, so I am unqualified to teach anybody anything.  Still, there are always jobs to be done, J.

I'm a new entry in this organization and I see, I'm not surely just the right person to participate in this discussion because I'm not an academic fellow in University for literary matters, on the contrary I'm only a lecturer for Psychiatry in Medicine faculty and only a latinist for pleasure and my satisfaction but I think that this proposal (Academia Minervalis) is a wonderful occasion to express important contents and to build a correct image of New Rome, where men and women with "good will" give their time and part of their life for a project, that will be useful for scholars and lay people all over the world. Moreover, I think the words of  Caeca are deeply correct. Festina lente! ( make haste slowly!) . We need enthusiasm and joy in creative work but also assurance  that, what is done, cannot be used against  New Rome.
Forgive me, please, if I wanted to express my opinion, but I read you carefully and I feel sincere admiration for your positive desire to create substance from a wonderful dream. Yours sincerely.

Maybe I'm reading this differently than you are, but the announcement didn't appear to me to imply that the institution is a part of, or recognized by, Nova Roma. I got the impression rather that it is an independent organization with one of its early goals being to seek recognition from the Senate in order to become part of Nova Roma.

Obviously only the original poster can clarify this, but that was the impression I got, which is apparently different from the impression the rest of you got...

Yes, indeed I read "can," which is much different than "will," and depends on other circumstances, including accomplishment of the stated goal, which you might also have done well to re-read:

"This new academia’s first
primary goal is formal recognition of the Nova Roma senate."

It is indeed explicit that it is not yet a part of Nova Roma.

Ave,

Hence you can see the reasons that we have voiced concerns.

I frankly have plenty of other concerns because the words peer review mean something very specific in academia...compared to the general population.

If peer review is used as the most generic term possible...well we already have that with the wiki.  In which anyone can publish almost anything...and anyone can revise almost anything.   If we are talking academic standard peer review I'd hate to burst anyone's bubble but it's unlikely to work.  I worked with the Pontifex Maximus to establish minimum standards for members of the college.  My idea was to include academic papers every 3 or 6 months on a topic of the cultus deorum with minimum page length and minimum references.   I believe, part of it got adopted but it required compromises.

Anyway,  I'll wait to see the response of the thread originator and I'll review the item when it hits the senate.

Understood. And I didn't mean to start a debate over specific wording, just to mention that my impression of the whole was contrary to the impression that apparently everyone else got.

I like the idea of the project, and think if it were successful it would be a wonderful thing for Nova Roma. Nevertheless, even without the benefit of the experience with Academia Thules, I do share some of your concerns. It is a massive undertaking, not just with the founding of a peer-reviewed academic journal, but with quality control for the courses, etc. It's hard to expect success in such an endeavor.

And although I think an academic institution would be great for NR, I'm not sure NR is the best place for an academic institution. A liberal arts curriculum (and let's be real, we aren't going to be teaching much modern science and engineering in a classics-oriented school) needs a certain amount of independence that, considering past issues hinted at in this thread, the Senate would probably (understandably) be reluctant to grant.

Well, I'll watch with interest and see what comes out of this...

Vergili Figule omnibusque sal.

This is a open letter to those who have raised concerns.

Figulus, thank you for pointing out our intentions. You are exactly correct. I'm quite confused as to where this confusion stems.

Let my reiterate Academia Minervalis intentions explicitly for their is no uncertainty.

Academia Minervalis is a CITIZEN driven initiative.

From it's founding we seek eventual recognition of the senate. The form which this takes is open to discussion. But we seek this recognition once we are operational. All I've personally done so far is to build a framework to get the ball rolling and facilitate healthy discussion. I've donated my personal financial resources towards getting this early framework set up as gift to a cause I'm passionate about. This cause is Nova Roma and our community. Academia Minervalis is made for you, my fellow citizens of Nova Roma. It's a project of passion, optimism and love for this community.  It is nothing more or less.

I have the highest respect for the senate and the leading bodies of our community. This is why I have raised the suggestion of inviting senators, magistrates, and even a pontifex to sit on the it's board of directors which consists of academia instructors. Of course, it is their personal choice if they wish to accept this invitation because we are, after all, just a group of private, but passionate Nova Roma citizens. But I do hope they would offer their time as it would be an effective way to address any concerns they may have while also working towards bringing a positive organization into Nova Roma. Also if think our board should after a different make up then we can discuss this too our the academia message board.

For those who believe our intentions are otherwise, or that we are moving "too fast", I urge you to revisit the actual site, academiaminervalis.org. View our mission statement and more importantly view our charter on the message board. I've attempted to draft operating procedures which address many of the concerns raised. Yet, I know this is just a beginning. That's why I've asked all of you to help write our charter. If you have concerns I urge you once more to join us in developing the charter. Let's discuss on our message board (www.academiaminervalis.org/phpbb/) about how we can make Academia Minervalis best serve our community and how we can spread our mutual passion of all things Roman to each other and the world. To better achieve Nova Roma's mission.

For those who say peer review cannot be achieved, or that our task is "too large" or "too hard" I ask you to encourage us rather than do the otherwise. When Nova Roma was young many viewed it with skepticism regarding its chances for success. Yet here it is today. Instead of being defeatist or being disheartened by the size of our task I urge my fellow citizens to unite behind a project which can strengthen our community. Yesterday there was no Academia Minervalis. Today there is one. We are making progress. The next part of this project's success is dependent on our citizens and their participation. I have faith in our community to achieve this goal, and I must say the support thus far as been overwhelming! After reading the messages of support both public and private I've never been prouder to be a Nova Roman. So much talent and so many willing to dedicate to this cause! I'm excited about the team which we are assembling.

To all who have posted messages about Academia Minervalis, even those with doubts, thank you all for being interested. That's the most important thing at this point! We are together talking about a community project and in doing so shaping its future. That's a terrific thing to witness and Nova Roma is better for it!

Optime valete!

Thank you so much for your clarification!  I will be visiting your site and message board, probably tomorrow, and I expect (smile) to be impressed.  I say that in a very positive mindset, BTW, not as a challenge!

If I like what I see as much as I think I will, then, of course, I will help in any small way I can.  I, also am passionate about this community … and will both help it and yes, become fierce if I think it needs protecting J.

Meanwhile, I have a more clear idea of how you are attempting to proceed, and what you are doing makes sense to me.

Salve,

Like all NR related activities instructors are teaching for pleasure and as a voluntary service to the mission of Nova Roma. Academia Minervalis is entire non-profit.

I want to raise a serious point here and something I'm excited about.  Because of the online system being used actual time demands on the instructors are minimized. We are all busy after all. Efficiency is important. Lectures are recorded and saved. Many types of exams are automatically graded etc. Interaction with the instructor is via the message board. How long an instructor spends on the board is their decision. The rest of the course is self directed. This overcomes two obstacles. First, instructor student scheduling. Second, time zone barriers. This technology being used is the same which is utilized at many universities. It really is what makes this whole thing possible.

Maybe we could offer teaching awards (not financial) to motivate instructors to strive for excellence? Something we can discuss on our message board.

In a nut shell, Academia Minervalis gives the instructor the tools to design a course. After this initial time investment most of ones time would be spent answering questions and maybe marking assignments.

L. Vitelli Triari omnibusque sal.

Our newest instructor raises good points. For any academic institution to thrive there needs to be a degree of independence. I personally don't see this being any different for Academia Minervalis. Senate approval could take various forms, the exact form it eventually would take is something the stakeholders, the Nova Roma citizens, should discuss. The message board at www.academiaminervalis.org/phpbb/ shows the early draft of the rules around these issues. As Vitellius Triarius mentioned, could this proposed draft have too many rules? Maybe? Again we need your input. It would be contrary to the principles of Academia Minervalis for me to hand such rules out in their final form. I also believe Vitellius Triarius' points demonstrate why we should polish these rules up on the message board. There is certainly room for improvement.

Currently the Academia Minervalis is in an embryonic form. It's depending on a few dedicated individuals, one being L. Vitellius Triarius, to grow and thrive. Right now simple collaboration between passionate citizens is enough. But as the academia grows beyond this group of founders it will need some operating procedures to stand on its own two feet. I certainly plan on handing the reigns to someone else in the future. What I don't want happening is what happened in Academia Thules. I hope that our finalized rules will prevent a group or an individual from hijacking the organization for their own purposes. I also want to prevent indoctrination politically. The solution I've proposed is inviting a limited number of individuals for a limited term to sit on its board. This board in my mind would be ideally nearly balanced between external reps and internal reps. I don't think we need to fear any external representation as long as academic integrity is maintained. I think the academia can be better for the external view points.

Can the senate and Nova Roma reject Academia Minervalis? Of course, absolutely! Will both organizations be weaker for it? I believe they will. But I also believe that the Academia Minervalis would not simply go away under these circumstances. It would continue as a organization where many Nova Roma citizens work and learn. It would want to remain close to Nova Roma. I sincerely believe that Nova Roma has more to lose from turning down the academia. Nothing would make me happier than to raise the majestic red SPQR flag on the homepage right next to the emblem of the Academia Minervalis on www.academiaminervalis.org

I want to digress for a moment and talk about something I feel is of critical importance. This issue is bigger than Academia Minervalis. I want to briefly discuss Nova Roma's view on external collaboration. Ancient Rome, the spiritual ancestor of Nova Roma was a melting pot of ideas and cultures. It attempted to bring peoples from across its territories into the fold. It survived the centuries, in part, because of this. The concept of this far flung citizenship is one pioneered by Rome. We must not shy away or fear external peoples from interacting with the res publica. I understand bad experiences have been had in the past. But we must embrace, dare I say it, positive foreign influences. This is essential for the growth of Nova Roma and its future. After all, prior to citizenship we were all outsiders at one time.  Of course we need regulations in place to safe guard Nova Roma from malicious intent. I'm not saying Nova Roma must be vulnerable, quite the contrary. But we must remember that most such collaboration holds the potential of being overwhelmingly positive. I would hope Academia Minervalis reaches out to any individual who wants learn about of share knowledge regarding to Rome without a prerequisite being citizenship. This process is essential to peer review, as Vitellius Triarius mentioned. But it is also essential to gaining more knowledge and getting closer Rome itself. The details on, limits and processes of how external collaboration will work needs to be written. I urge those interested to visit our message board (www.academiaminervalis.org/phpbb/) to propose ideas on this important topic.

If Nova Roma is to succeed in its mission. To grow beyond a wiki and a yahoo group, it needs to adopt this open attitude, and recover from past trauma. We need to tear open the gates and reach out. Academia Minervalis is poised to point many people towards Nova Roma. It desires to gather up the people and send them to Rome. To enrich our community.  I beseech you my fellow Romans, when our provinces are quiet and the conversation within the sodlitas infrequent, can we afford to not reach out?

Few things are more powerful than education. Cliche, yes, but true. Education as a form of outreach and as a way of building a community is what Academia Minervalis is about. From the support received thus far, I do believe that we, as a community recognize this. The inspirational volunteers such as, L. Vitellius Triarius have convinced me of this fact. The many citizens who have exemplified voluntary industriousness towards the lofty goal of Academia Minervalis are the future of Nova Roma. I am utterly convinced of this and excited to see where they will take this project.

I too completely agree with Triarius, let the project stand as citizen project and grow by itself. If it strives great for it and will attract more citizens if not it would be sad but that it is life.

ATS:  Exactly.

If there is that much Senatorial concern, which I have not heard at all, then the Academia Thules/Ebola scare is unwarranted.  The problem with AT was it was pretty much controlled by Saturninus, who got pissed off and took his toys and left the playground.

ATS:  As one of the two teachers from the AT who is still in NR, please allow me to correct some points here.  The course server (there were two servers, one for the courses, one for the AT as a whole) broke, possibly because its tender, Quintilianus, shut it off every time there was a dark cloud in the Swedish sky.  Methinks the switch broke from overuse.  Saturninus has a fetish about time management, and refused to devote the time necessary to repair the server.  Without the course server, obviously there could be no courses offered.  We had flourishing Latin courses taught by two different methods, a preliminary course finishing up, and numerous other courses listed at the AT (not sure if others were in progress, but one taught by MMA might have been) when the server failed.  We found a separate home for the Latin courses (and may add to them next year; Greek may be on the menu for the future, and more Latin surely is), but I suspect that any other courses in progress simply vanished.
I don't think Saturninus took his toys and went home (Quintilianus owned the course server, not Saturninus), but his refusal to have it repaired or to repair it himself was fatal.  I hear that he walked away from the RPR, taking his toys with him, but that was not strictly the case with the AT.

This happened before the "big civil war" issue and does not need to be alluded that it was part of it...just for reference for those who were not here then.

ATS:  Yes, some must be reminded about ACTUAL history, rather than the imagined version.

This is a great project with a lot of potential, however, it is the same exact project, whether it has the NR stamp of approval or not.

ATS:  Yes, and we have reenactment legions which work very well quite apart from any supervision from the NR Senate; at least one of the most successful legions wants no part of that. There is no need for such supervision, which might be more harmful than helpful..

Salve,

If this is the case, why does the state sponsor Sodlitas? What different principles are at play here than with the Academia? What does the state have to loose from endorsing the academia? Not many organizations would refuse to extend a hand to an organization looking to better educate their members on topics of relevance. Especially considering this organization asks for nothing material in return.

State sponsorship could assist in the growth of the academia and this in return assists the growth of Nova Roma, a symbiotic relationship. Right now Nova Roma's only constant daily presence is a wiki and a yahoo list. This is after 16 years. I'm surprised that some citizens desire it to remain as such. Academia Minervalis offers to build a solid academic community within Nova Roma. It's curious to me why the state would be reluctant to formally endorse and get behind such an activity. Maybe I'm missing something?

State sponsorship does not have to equate to total state control. That seems awfully black and white and contrary to Nova Roma's history with the sodlitas and mission statement.

Again, what relationship is formed with the senate is a matter for healthy discussion. But an attitude of, "survive and that's awesome for us, die than oh well". That's not the type of attitude which is going to make citizens motivated towards growing our small organization or taking on increasingly ambitious projects which will extend our influence beyond a yahoo email list.

I don't think this attitude generally reflects the will or interest of the citizen.

Caninus sal.

I support this education project. However, if a relationship with Nova Roma is desired, as the website and discussion here suggests, then we should enter into a memorandum of understanding so the academy and Nova Roma can agree on the general outline of the project. An MOU gives both parties a written document to guide the relationship in broad terms without any legally binding terms. This would likely be a very brief document and it would probably contain much of the same kind of language as the academy's website regarding the mission of the academy and its relationship to Nova Roma. Given the statements made regarding the intended make up of the board for the academy, there will likely be at least a few NR Senators providing guidance. The academy's board and the MOU will provide adequate protection for Nova Roma without placing an undue burden on the academy.

Salve M. Pomei Canine,

Have you seen the charter? The draft was released at the time the academia was launched.

Founding Documents - Academia Minervalis

This is the document which this relationship is outlined. It's not perfect, but it is a start. I've been encouraging citizens to discuss this document on our message board and improve it.

This could be the document we eventually approach the senate with.

M. Pompeius Caninus P. Claudio Caeco spd.

The founding document will probably be of some interest to members of the Senate; however, it does not define the relationship between Nova Roma and Academia Minervalis. More importantly, it does not define what Nova Roma expects from the project nor does it specify and duties or obligations Nova Roma may have towards the project. A memorandum of understanding will define in broad terms what the two parties expect to achieve through collaboration in the project. It will outline the duties of Nova Roma as well as the duties of Academia Minervalis. For instance, the MOU will likely need a clause something like this:

"The Academia Minervalis and Nova Roma will use or display the name, emblem, or trademarks of the other organization only in the case of defined projects and only with the prior, express, written consent of the other organization."

Such a clause provides a means for Academia Minervalis to use the Nova Roma trademark while also limiting the use of Nova Roma's trademark so it will not be abused. A clause like this will also help protect the name and emblems of Academia Minervalis.

Other clauses in the MOU might spell out a code of conduct, a termination date, and a requirement for annual or periodic joint reviews to go over metrics, strategic goals or to develop new plans. It might even spell out what happens when one of the two organizations decides to pack up their toys and go home.

Exactly. That is. Thanks Canine!
Such initiative how the Academia is awesome. I will be near those who endorse it. A formal agreement document is necessary between Academia and Nova Roma. This document will not limit the Academia's other initiative or relations. But it will assure the safety of Nova Roma. I am sorry to disappoint a few who are more emotional but I and a few other here witnessed too much how Nova Roma was sacrificed for other interests. Usually things start with good intention but in time change.

Note:
And NR is not only on wiki and yahoo. It is also in Second Life where we have great interactions with educational sims, where in collaboration with Roma sim we organize conferences, relaxing activities and so on.

Social media have become an integral part of the cyber environment,
and participation in them offers several fairly obvious possible
advantages. They give us a more public presence. They can, and do,
attract new citizens. They allow us to interact in new ways with both
our own citizens and people who share some, or all, of our interests.
We have had an active Facebook group for some years, and I know of
several individuals who began their association with us on that group
and have, since, become citizens. We have had a Nova Roma Facebook
page for some time, and it has received over 1,000 “likes”. “Likes”,
BTW, are a kind of social media “currency” so getting them is a loose
gauge of the page’s popularity. So far as I know, there have been no
serious security issues with either of these, and I doubt there will
be.

In addition, we have a Twitter presence, as well as our own Pinterest
board. In short, we are becoming active in the 21st Century, and this
is, and will continue to be, to our benefit.

As far as Second Life is concerned, before dismissing it as
insignificant and not serious, I suggest strongly that people actually
establish a free account, and look to see what Consuleris and former
Censor Gn. Iulius Caesar and our current Pontifex Maximus, former
Consul, and former Censor T. Iulius Sabinus have created. It is more
than worth seeing, and like all things, one can find both the serious
and the trivial in Second life, and you will get out of it what you
are willing to put into it. However, to simply dismiss this, or any
of our efforts out of hand is unfair, narrow minded and arrogant, in
my opinion.

I wish the Plebeian Aedile good fortune with this new page, and look
forward to watching it flourish.

Nova Roma must grow. Anything which can draw new citizens to our res publica is a great thing! When our provinces are quiet, and our sodalitas nearly silent we do not have the luxury of being hypercritical of the media in which we reach out to the world. Especially when such media is free. Ti. Fortunately for those of us in my immediate area, we are not in the hardest-hit areas, and did not receive four to six feet of snow Tuesday or another foot or two Thursday.  We did get about a foot and a half over the last few days.  Even in the less affected areas, schools, colleges, and universities have been closed since Tuesday, Amtrak was cancelled from Albany to Cleveland (may still be; not sure), the Thruway has been closed from near Rochester to the Pennsylvania line (they are about to reopen it, but not the exits); people have been stranded there for days.  There have been deaths and roof collapses, and due to many driving bans, people are running out of food and gasoline.  The situation is terrible, but unfortunately for those not bonae voluntatis, I am not among the worst affected; we got a good bit of snow, but the roads are clear and good neighbors helped one another, although I have plenty of shoveling to do.

Hope you are well, Maria, and not suffering too much from the polar vortex.  I hear it got rather nippy in Atlanta, too.  Maybe it even snowed…many thanks for asking, and for your note, which, however, did not make it to my primary mail system.  Neither did a post from Mr. Gallagher yesterday, although both made it to the secondary one.  Will try to respond via other means (though not the telephone); the normal mail systems seem to be ailing from the snow.

Caesar Berlusconi I, having overthrown Matteo Renzi to recapture power, gazed at the map of his Roman Empire plastered on the palace wall. He smiled with satisfaction—the Empire now ran the breadth of the Western Hemisphere.

Americus, Britannia, Gaul, Germania, Espana, Italia, Jerusalem...all his provinces. He’d even made peace with the Vatican, though he knew from the disapproving glances that Pontifex Maximus Francis was no fan of his lifestyle.

Looking out the large window at the Imperial Palace, he could see his fleet of chariot-cars: the Ferraris, the Lamborghinis, the Maseratis and the one Alfa Romeo he kept as a private joke.

Not that taking the Ferrari chariot-car to work was all that quick. Damn the peasants and their little Fiats, clogging up the lanes and cutting around like the lines were invisible. Even the Gauls drove better than that.

Caesar Berlusconi glanced back at the map. There was still so much to conquer, but it had been years since his legions had been sent out to seize more countries and turn them into Roman provinces.

He knew who was to blame. Americus Senator Baracus Obami’s peace-at-all-costs attitude was driving him crazy. Why was he not sending the legions to battle the gladiators in the desert? It’s not like he didn’t have a big army at his disposal…what were they all doing, playing Call of Duty on their XBoxes?

He’d had such high hopes for Obami too. He’d appointed him the first black Senator. He might have even considered letting Obami be his successor after his passing… he’d have been only the second black Emperor after Septimius Severus in A.D 146.

But not now. No, he’d let him stay just two more years while deciding who to replace him with. Maybe that ambitious Hilari Clintona, he could make her the first woman Senator in that part of the empire.

Or maybe he should elevate Dickus Cheni, sidekick of a former Senator, but who rumours claimed was the real power at that time. He seemed like a straight shooter too, except for that one time when he went quail-hunting and his aim was a bit off.

Damn, just thinking about that Obami made him mad. He was letting little punks like Justin Beiber run around and corrupt the people with his terrible music...what did they call it, pop? How he missed Pavarotti; his mood was aways better when the fat man was there to sing in his court.

His mind drifted in recollection…

'o sole mio sta nfronte a te!
'o sole o sole mio
sta nfronte a te ... sta nfronte a te

My sunshine, your bright face? Obami was not spreading any sunshine on his face, that was for sure. Why had he not converted everyone to Roman Catholicism yet was beyond him. Look at what was happening because of that. When Obami told him the citizens in Americus were having a gay old time, he didn’t think he meant men were prancing around with men, and women with women. Though, come to think of that…

Maybe he should take the Alitalia Flying Chariot and spend some time to mingle with the women at the White House Piazza. He’d bring his own Chianti though. What was that lousy gift offering of wine that Obami sent him last Caesar’s Day? Napa Valley? What kind of a name was that for a wine anyway?

And what about that other important province, Britannia! Was SenatorDavid Cameroni losing his grip? He almost let Scotland break away from the Empire and become independent. Today it would be tiny Scotland, tomorrow it might be mighty India. Wait, what...when did that happen? Hadn’t a previous Emperor sent Sonia Maino of Vicenza to India to become Senator? Damn it, he should learn to use this new-fangled internet thing to get the news, the courier pigeons couldn’t be trusted to bring him bulletins any more.

He heard this internet thing had a whole library of information on a site called Wikipedia. But the site was run by some Jimmy of Wales. Didn’t sound very Roman. Hopefully this Jimmy of Wales wasn’t going to do a Scotland and try to get independence for Wales too. If he had true allegiance to the Caesar, he’d change his name to Walesi or Waleso or Walesa…not that adding the vowels made it sound much better.

Luckily he heard there was a new internet House of Knowledge being built, and it had a grand Roman name too, Quora. And it had fine contributors with authentic Roman names like D'Angelo and Balaji and Saito and Vranaand Beixi and Virali and Siri.

Hey, wasn’t Siri the name of that fine performer he watched on the Roman XTV network last night? Nah, what was he thinking, a performer like that who was also intelligent? Ha, ha. That reminded him, he should throw another “bunga bunga” party. He could invite Sabina and Mara and Angelaand Alessandra. It wasn’t like Empress Veronica was around anymore to throw a fit.

Or maybe he could ask Obami to send over that woman from Americus with the sex tape, what was her name, Paris Hilton?

Yes, he could always have Paris.

Salve Scholastica!

I am extremely relived to hear from you!

I am happy to hear from you as well!

I was in the process of unearthing your address, preparatory to calling the PD in your town to do a “check on the welfare of”, which would have annoyed them, being busy I’m sure,

I'm sure!

and you, no doubt, inordinately, but I was determined to make sure you were OK, and had food and such.

I'm in reasonably good shape.  Today the absence of snow and presence of sun has helped get the roads open; even most of the Thruway exits are open now, although many roads are still closed.  Not right here, though.  My immediate area rarely gets the worst of this type of storm, and this time did not.  We got snow, but not impossible volumes thereof.

Glad all is at least passably well with you, and no, we didn’t get snow, just cold and lots of wind.

Glad to hear you are doing well, and did NOT get snow!  I know you have no love for that stuff!  Still, anything below 90 must be unpleasant in Hotlanta  ;-)

Um, last time I checked, Atlanta isn’t on the equator, quite …so anything below, oh, 40F or so is cold, and anything below freezing is …unthinkable.  As to snow, well, I have reached the point in my life when I can look out the window, pretend it’s all a pretty postcard, turn up the heat, wrap up in something, and just ignore the whole show J.

Salvete omnes,

I would like to thank to all five candidates to Quaestor and I will be voting in all of them. It is very reassuring to see so many candidates to the Quaestorship to many the first step in the Cursus Honorum.

As said I will vote in all but would like to say some words concerning the candidates I had the opportunity to work closer and more often.

Ti. Cassius Atellus is actually scriba to both Consules and have shown immense dedication and work to Nova Roma including Live Broadcasting among other projects. I'm sure he will be a great Quaestor and hope to see him in other higher offices in the future.

I have been lucky to work with C. Claudius Quadratus both with him as Tribunus and Augur and always had his immediate assistance whenever I requested. More I remember the talks about the Roman calendar when he have just joined NR and keep by my side his amazing calendar he sent me.

Cn. Cornelius Lentulus doesn't need introduction and as also always been a great help whenever I need a Pontifex assistance.

I haven't the pleasure yet to work Gnaeus Rutilius Viminalis and Tiberius Iulius Nerva but I'm certain they will perform well as Quaestores.

I ask all citizens to vote on all five candidates in these elections.

Valete optime,

I think we have an excellent slate of candidates for Quaestor this year, and my only comment is that I am very happy to see the number of candidates who are running!  I can’t remember the last time we had 5 qualified candidates for these entry level, and therefore crucial, positions.  I wish each candidate the best of Fortuna’s gifts, and, because of the number of offices, will be able to vote for all of them!
