So true! I will look it up.  I mean, I just went to that 50 Shades thing (OMG) w/a friend (because I'm a GOOD friend) LOL  I can sit thru this to check up on it.  Sometimes even w/films that get the history or story totally wrong have priceless moments, great cinematic effects, &/or good performances to offset that :D
You see it first & let us know ~grin~

Ave,

Well I wouldn't go to a movie to get fact based anything.  However, I never heard of the movie at all and it looked fairly new so I am curious.

As I am stuck here in nursing land recovering I will probably end up watching it when there is nothing else good on basic cable (yes I am suffering very very much) lol  So, I might throw up something once I do see it. :)

Omnibus in Foro S. P. D.

Today is Matronalea! It is the ancient Roman equivalent of Mother's Day,
so, as good Romani, we should do something nice for at least one of the
women in our lives, :). It is also the birthday of the poet Martial, famous
for his steamy love poetry and his marvelously vicious epigrams.

Valete bene!

CN CORNELIUS LENTULUS : PONTIFEX: SACERDOS CONCORDIAE : QUIRITIBUS : S P D

Salvete et avete, Novi Romani Quirites!

Tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock...
Today is a great day for Nova Roma: we are celebrating the first day of the Ludi Novi Romani, the Concordialia, the 17th Birthay of Nova Roma. This is the day when Nova Roma was founded. Concordia is our Patron Goddess, because Goddess Agreement makes us one nation: the New Roman Nation. Let's honor Her today on the Concordialia!
Nova Roma lives difficult time: we almost seem as a non-entity, and probably some would say NR doesn't do anything, doesn't go anywhere and it is just an empty box with a label on it, but nobody and nothing is therein.
I would disagree: Nova Roma is now a hope. Yes, right, indeed, it is *just* a hope, but it *is* a hope. We have hope, we STILL have hope for a change. Any of you who seriously believe in Nova Roma and believe that we are Romans and we have a mission, it is time to come forward and start breathing life into this community.
Today, that we celebrate our 17th Birthday, let's make a vow: before Nova Roma turns adult, namely 18 years of age, we change this community to become more lively, more active and productive again! We must change, or we disappear. Sooner or later we remain only an idea. Now we are still a hope, we still have potential, we can still become a real active and working community. But the clock is ticking...

Today is Matronalea!

ATS:  Indeed, today IS the Matronalia!  Moreover, in earlier days it was New Year's Day as well as something similar to Mothers' Day, but more like Ladies' Day.

It is the ancient Roman equivalent of Mother's Day,

ATS:  More or less, although the Roman version of this celebration was not limited to mothers, or even married women; presents were also given to maidens and other unmarried women.

so, as good Romani, we should do something nice for at least one of the
women in our lives, :). It is also the birthday of the poet Martial, famous
for his steamy love poetry and his marvelously vicious epigrams.

ATS:  I wouldn't say that Martialis was famous for love poetry (his works were more like hate poetry); that award goes to other poets.  He is, however, quite famous for his sarcastic epigrams, some of which deal with sexually-related topics.

A much more appropriate poem for this occasion is that by Q. Horatius Flaccus, who laments that he didn't have much to do on Ladies' Day, especially since he was a bachelor, but every year celebrates the anniversary of his survival from a tree's attempt to slaughter him.  I shall copy-paste it below.  Further information may be found on this in various classical references; it is poem viii in Book III of Horace's works as they are conventionally arranged, so is easily found.

This being poetry, there are some abstruse words here, and some less familiar ones, so I shall gloss them:

caelebs, 'bachelor;' acerra, 'incense box / container;' caespes (caespite), 'turf, sod;' pice, ablative of 'pix,' tar, pitch; cyathós (cyathus); a word of Greek derivation, 'wine ladle.' 'Cotisónis' is the genitive of a personal name, that of a king of the Getae or Dacians, 'Cotisó;' above one finds the name 'Maecenas,' which should be familiar to everyone here (as should 'Liberó,' the dative of the name of an Italian deity identified with Bacchus / Dionysos).  'Linque' is more often found in its compounds, such as 'relinquo,' but has a similar meaning of 'leave,' here imperative singular.

Thank you very much for your useful remarks, Scholastica. In "Encyclopedia Britannica " I found this article- that I paste here- confirming what you say : "   Matronales Feriae
Matronalia, also called Matronales Feriae,  in Roman religion, ancient festival of Juno, the birth goddess, celebrated annually by Roman matrons on March 1; on that date in 375 bc a temple was dedicated to Juno. According to tradition, the cult was established by Titus Tatius, king of the Sabines. The Matronalia symbolized not only the sacredness of marriage but also the peace that followed the first marriages between Romans andSabine women. The festival consisted of a procession of married women to the temple, where they made offerings to Juno. At home, offerings were supplemented by prayers for marital felicity. Wives received gifts from their husbands and gave a feast for their female slaves."

Subject: Tax Questions
Avete Omnes,

Please consider this a sort of running FAQ

Since I made the announcement I have received about 14 emails asking various questions.  While these are private correspondence it has occurred to me, given my experience as a college professor that there might be others who would benefit from some of this information.

Some of us might be too shy to ask me privately, or they could be intimidated being a newbie, OR they have been convinced that I am worse than Jack the Ripper by those who don't like me.  ;)

Whatever the reason, information only helps those who ask, but I hope that some information can be passed along, even if you don't ask, but still have questions.

1.  Senators, all Senators pay the Class I rate of tax.  This goes for those of us like myself who have been in NR for 17 years to our brand new Senators.

2.  If you wish to confirm what class you are in - you can confirm that with me.  Everything is transparent so it all can be double checked to ensure you are paying the correct amount.

3.  If you overpay taxes, for example you thought you were in class III but paid class II amount, you will need to contact me for arrangements.

4.  If you paid your tax before the tax season began, but after the new year (Jan 1, 2015)and you and you paid the correct tax amount, your tax payment will be applied for this year.

Respectfully,

Happy Nova Roman Birthday Games, Citizens!

We are celebrating the Ludi Novi Romani, our Founding' Anniversary Birthday Games, since we have just completed 17 years with Nova Roma! This year, however, since we don't have aediles curules, the aediles plebis A. Iulius Paterculus and C. Maria Marcella are presiding over these Ludi. Because of the inevitable obstacles in such a setting up of a festival, there will be some delays with the games, and the programs shall also be much more modest than normally. But nevertheless, our excellent aediles will not let Nova Roma remain without a proper birthday party!

Long live Nova Roma!
Long live the aediles, A. Iulius Paterculus and C. Maria Marcella!

Subject: Opening of the Ludi
A. Paterculus aedilis plebis Quiritibus s.p.d.

It is now just over seventeen years since Nova Roma was founded.

A child who was born at the same time would be nearly an adult by our modern standards; by ancient standards such a child would be old enough to have already spent years married or in military service. In either case, after so many years a human being would have already begun to experience a wider view of the world, to view inherited perspectives with a new degree of objectivity, or at least a different and broader understanding then before. How unlike the experience of such a child is ours!

For in Nova Roma, such a shift in perspectives is not an occurrence that happens rarely, to be lauded as a rite of passage. It is continual event, renewed by every new citizen who brings a fresh interpretation of a person, event, or tradition, evident in every debate in which each side learns to see the past a little more clearly. Just as the union of the Mediterranean allowed the spread of ideas from Antioch to Massalia, the union of our republic allows an ever-improved understanding of Rome to reach not only the thoughts, but the lived experience of more people. This may be something which has taken seventeen years to reach the point it has now, but it was inherent from day 1.

In that spirit, I am pleased to announce the opening of this year’s ludi Novi Romani.

 Valete.

To honor Nova Roma's birthday and the soon-to-arrive Vernal Equinox, a Canada Citerior Coin Contest will be held in conjunction with the Ludi Romani.
This contest is open to all and an identifiable ancient Roman coin will be awarded to those with the top three scores.  The theme of the contest will be "The Twelve Caesars."  (Note: this involves the rulers and is not meant as a reference to the work of Suetonius.)  There will be four sets of short answer questions, to be posed in the early morning (all times are Rome times) of March 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th.  The deadline for response is Noon on the Ides, at which time the answers will be posted.  The results will be announced before midnight on the Ides.

You may respond to any set of questions as late as Noon on the Ides.  However, one bonus point will be awarded to those who respond to any set of questions prior to the posing of the following set.  Up to three bonus points may be earned in that way.

ESSENTIAL:  Your answers must be posted to  c.claudius.quadratus@...   Anyone who mistakenly publicly posts answers will not be eligible for a prize.

Send your entries to caninus@... and not to the public fora.

Please feel free to add all the details you can about the background and

It is a very brief book that might be best suited to kids in middle school or junior high for an overview. It also could provide quick reminders to adults who want to be conversant in the myths but only want a basic outline on the subject. It is worthwhile primarily because it is free - not sure I would recommend it otherwise.

Bene valete.

Avete Omnes,

I found a very fascinating link about monetary policy, in particular fiat money and the very first section deals with ancient Rome.  The entire article is fascinating, so I hope you all might enjoy it.

Salvete!

Here is the first of the four sets of questions and below is a copy of the procedures previously posted.  Please do not publicly post your answers, but send them to c.claudius.quadratus@....

Participate!  Roman coins awarded to the three highest scorers.  Note:  This contest is rated PG.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first of The Twelve Caesars, of course, was C. Iulius Caesar, the great general and dictator who met his fate on the Ides of March.

Caesar had family ties to a somewhat earlier great general who died shortly after entering upon his seventh consulship.

1.  Who was that general?

2.  How, exactly, were Caesar and that general related?

3. - 4.  That general made some very important changes to the military.  What were two of those changes?

5.  That general was a so-called "New Man."  What is meant by that term?

6.  Name another very famous "New Man."

Caesar also had family ties to another, more contemporary, great general.

7. - 8.  Who was this second general and how, exactly, were they related?

9. - 10.  Something tragic happened (nothing to do with military or political matters) that weakened the relationship between Caesar and this general.  What happened and in what year?

(10 points + 1 possible bonus point are available.)

-----------------------------------------

If you have questions, contact me at the above email address.  Good luck to all contestants.

Subject: Can you trust a Visigoth?
December 24, 2012 | Author Pater Tenebrarum

1600 Years Ago, in the Year 412 AD, or 1156Ab Urbe Condita (since the founding of Rome) …

In 412, the Western Roman Emperor Honorius (full name Flavius Honorius Augustus), the son of Theodosius I.,  teamed up with the Visigoth king Ataulf (also: Atawulf, the 'father of wolves') against the usurper Jovinus.

Jovinus had unilaterally proclaimed himself Augustus and made his brother Sebastianus his co-emperor, taking control of Northern Gaul with the help of the Gallic nobility as well as King Gundahar of the Burgundians and King Goar of the Alans. The Burgundians used the opportunity to establish themselves on the Roman side of the Rhine, founding a new kingdom there with Worms as the capital.

Ataulf marched from Italy to Gaul, with ex-emperor Priscus Attalus and Honorius' half-sister Galla Placidia in tow as hostages, ostensibly to join Jovinus.  While on the way, Ataulf crossed paths with another Visigoth chieftain named Sarus, who was supposed to help Jovinus militarily. Ataulf evidently wanted to be the only Visigoth of importance in Gaul and without further ado decided to attack and kill Sarus.

It was at this point that a slightly miffed Jovinus appointed his brother Sebastianus co-emperor, without consulting Ataulf on the matter. Ataulf was incensed at this perceived slight and thereupon allied himself with Honorius. He then swiftly conquered Southern Gaul, captured Sebastianus and handed him over to Honorius' praetorian governor in Gaul, the prefect Caius Posthumus Dardanus. Shortly thereafter Ataulf also captured the fleeing Jovinus at Valentia after a brief siege and handed him over as well.

Dardanus in turn sent the heads of Jovinus and Sebastianus  to Honorius at his court in Ravenna, where they arrived in 413, slightly the worse for the wear and somewhat smelly. Nevertheless, the heads were mounted on the walls of Ravenna, so as to serve as a reminder that crossing Honorious could be decidedly unhealthy. Later on, presumably in a state of advanced decay, the heads were transferred to Carthage to be put on permanent display with those of four other would-be usurpers.

And so the question 'can you trust a Visigoth?' was answered in the affirmative for Honorius: yes, you can at times (this is to say, you could in 412. In 414, Ataulf would proclaim Priscus Attalus emperor again, the guy he had tagging along as a hostage. Honorius eventually got his revenge on both of them though). It was different for Jovinus, who found out that it can be a deadly mistake to trust a Visigoth.

A siliqua of Jovinus, celebrating the 'victories of the emperor'. His two year reign lasted just long enough to get a few coins with his face stamped on them into circulation. He shouldn't have trusted the Visigoth Ataulf.

The interesting thing is that Honorius' general Stilicho had previously battled  the Visigoth king Alaric on several occasions when Alaric tried to invade Italy in the years 401 to 408. Stilicho eventually persuaded Alaric to leave Rome alone by paying him a ransom of 4,000 gold pounds of gold, reluctantly released by the Senate. This of course didn't keep Alaric from sacking Rome in 410. And yet, Honorious had no problem forming an alliance with another Visigoth when it suited him.

As it were, good old Honorius really had his hands full in 412. Just as Jovinus tried to make himself the new emperor based in Gaul, another underling tried his hand at revolt as well.  Heraclianus, the governor of North Africa,  proclaimed himself Augustus too in 412. As a gesture of ill will, he cut off the grain supply to Rome. Honorius condemned him to death with an edict, and Heraclianus, who didn't have enough troops to support his claim to rule, was eventually killed when trying to flee to Carthage.

Honorius' reign was remarkable for two reasons: for one thing, it coincided with the collapse of the Western Roman empire. The loss of Britain and the sack of Rome both happened on his watch. For another, he actually died of natural causes in 423 (an edema is suspected), the by far rarest cause of death for Roman emperors at the time. His empire crumbled, but he survived. His contemporaries were appropriately awed by this feat and left the following inscription in his honor:

Inscription in honor of Honorius, the “most excellent and invincible”.

Historians generally hold unkind views of Honorius in spite of his admirable personal longevity, because of his inability to keep the Teutonic tribes at bay and hold the empire together. Moreover, it has been reported by Procopius of Caesarea (a historian who lived from 500 AD to 565 AD) that Honorius, upon being apprised of the sack of Rome, was initially in hysterics because he wrongly believed his favorite chicken (which he had also named 'Roma') had died. When the error was pointed out to him, he was allegedly greatly relieved.

According to Procopius:

Thus far, nine responses to the round one questions, and six responses to the round two questions have been received.  The deadline for all responses is Noon on the Ides (Rome time).  It is not too late to enter this contest!

At the moment there is a tie for first place:  C. Decius Laterensis and Valeria Pavo each has a perfect score of 23 points.  In third place with 22.5 points is C. Claudius Barbatus.  Close behind with 22 points are M. Pompeius Caninus and Quintus Lutatius.  The competition is wide open, especially considering that two contestants with perfect round one scores have not yet sent in round two responses.

The third round questions will be posted shortly after midnight tonight.

So far received:  11 responses to the first set of questions, 10 responses to the second, 7 responses to the third.  It is not too late to join this contest but time is running out.

At the moment, first place is occupied by C. Decius Laterensis with 32 points (out of a possible maximum of 34).  In second place is Valeria Pavo with 31.5, and in third place is Quintus Lutatius with 31. Within two points of the leaders are M. Pompeius Caninus and Titus Sicinius Lupus.  Furthermore, some round two high-scorers have yet to respond to the round three questions, so the top places are still up for grabs.

The final set of questions will be posted shortly after midnight tonight Rome time.  Answers and final standings will be posted after Noon on the Ides, when the contest closes.

2.  In the early years of Nero's reign, three other people were exercising power behind the throne.  Who were they?

3.  What was done to the Colossus Neronis under Vespasian?

4.  The emperor Theodosius II died after falling off a horse.  What prominent Julio-Claudian (not an emperor) suffered the same fate?

5.  Who was the first Roman emperor to have been born outside of Italy?

6.  What did Caligula do that greatly upset the Jews?

7.  Upon what Roman monument is depicted a triumphal procession with the booty taken from the Jewish temple at Jerusalem?

8.  During the reign of Domitian, the Ludi Saeculares were held.  Such games were supposed to be held only after the lapse of a very great interval of time.  What was the interval of time supposed to represent?

9.  Domitian was assassinated in 96, ending the Flavian Dynasty.  The Senate decreed that his statues be destroyed, his inscriptions erased, and records of his reign obliterated.  What is the Latin expression for that kind of procedure?

In celebration of the second Equirria (the first was on February 27th), today I performed the Caremonia Equirriae on behalf of the Senate and People of Nova Roma.  Normally, the ritual is to be performed by the Flamen Martialis, but as that post is currently vacant, I have performed the ritual in his place.  Unless I'm mistaken, there should also be some chariot races held today.  Full details on the background of the Equirria and the details of the ritual itself can be found here:

CN CORNELIUS LENTULUS : PONTIFEX: SACERDOS CONCORDIAE : QUIRITIBUS : S P D

Vivat Nova Roma annorum XVII!

This has been the closing ritual for the Ludi Novi Romani, the 17th Anniversary Games of the Founding of Nova Roma. Today we pray to Concordia, to Mars and to Anna Perenna, goddess of longevity for a long life of NR. On this day, Roman tradition says one must drink as many couple of wine as many years one wants to live in the rest of his life. Let's drink sone couple of wine today, not only for us, but for Nova Roma, too.

The Nova Romania or Concordialia ends today.

There is much to do for us.

The only question is where to begin.

But we must begin, or Nova Roma ends.

Let's revitalize Nova Roma!

(I offered incense on the altar and poured a libation of wine on the altar.)

POETICAL CLOSING

CONTEMPLATION
Poem by C. Maria Caeca

This, my Nova Roma.
This, my home, impervious
To , place to boundaries;
Drawing together from
Many cultures, many native
Tongues: each with a vision,
Each vision connected: separate:
Each personal ideal
Creating imperatives that must
Mesh to become one
To form something unique; each citizen
A brick in an edifice always
Being built; changing yet solid:

Dea Concordia, be the mortar
That holds our bricks, keeping
Them together, strongly bonded;
Holding our patterns; making many
Into one; dreams into dream:
Energy and effort united
Making of us a structure that
Can and will withstand all tests:
Defined by its unity,
Celebrating each living brick
And always mindful that it is you,
Concordia, that holds and keeps
This, my Nova Roma safe
For all of us.

Subject: Ludi Novi Romani - Canada Citerior Coin Contest Closed - Answers
Salvete!

Noon on the Ides having arrived, the Ludi contest is concluded.  A hearty "Thank You" to all who have participated in this event.  Here are the questions and answers.  Final standings and prizes will be announced shortly.

Round 1:

The first of The Twelve Caesars, of course, was C. Iulius Caesar, the great general and dictator who met his fate on the Ides of March.

Caesar had family ties to a somewhat earlier great general who died shortly after entering upon his seventh consulship.

1.  Who was that general?      A:  Gaius Marius

2.  How, exactly, were Caesar and that general related?    A:  Marius was married to Caesar's aunt.

3. - 4.  That general made some very important changes to the military.  What were two of those changes?
A:  There were many.  He opened the military to the capite censi (head count), created a standing army, reorganized legions into cohorts instead of maniples, etc.

5.  That general was a so-called "New Man."  What is meant by that term?
A:  Someone who was the first ever in his family to become Consul or to enter the Senate.

6.  Name another very famous "New Man."       A:  Best answers - Cicero, Cato the Censor, Tacitus.

Caesar also had family ties to another, more contemporary, great general.

7. - 8.  Who was this second general and how, exactly, were they related?     A:  Best answer -  Pompeius Magnus, who was married to Caesar's daughter, Julia.

9. - 10.  Something tragic happened (nothing to do with military or political matters) that weakened the relationship between Caesar and this general.  What happened and in what year?             A:  Julia died in childbirth in 54 BC.

Round 2:

1.  What was Claudius's complete name?    A:  Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus.  Later,  Caesar Augustus added.

2.  How many times was Claudius married?     A:  4

3.  How old was he when he died?  (in years)     A:  63

4.  A satire on the death of Claudius and his introduction into the afterlife is generally attributed to whom?      A:  Seneca

5.  What is the usual name that this satire is now known by?    A:  Apocolocyntosis

The following questions are based upon the satire.

6.  What were the last words of Claudius?  (1 point for English - which differs in various translations - 1 bonus point for the exact Latin quote.)
A:  Oh, dear.  I think I soiled myself  -  a polite translation of  "Vae me.  Puto concacavi me."

7.  What is the Latin name of the divinity referred to in a popular translation of the satire as "Our Lady of Malaria?"    A:  Febris

8.  The senate of the gods debated the possible deification of Claudius.  Which divinity spoke eloquently in opposition to his deification?   A:  Augustus

9.  Claudius was ordered deported from heaven within a specific period of time.  What was that period of time?     A:  30 days

10.  What was Claudius's ultimate punishment and fate in the underworld?       A:  To spend eternity working as a law clerk.

Round 3:

1.  This may be difficult, but write something nice about Caligula.  (sarcasm encouraged)       A:  Almost anything goes here - but this is the one I liked best:
From Laterensis:  Through his appointment of Senator Incitatus, Caligula proved that social standing, wealth, and accidents of birth (such as being a horse) were no impediments to advancement.  His example stands as an inspiration to anyone who aspires to be more than they are.

2.  Which of the twelve Caesars probably died a natural death?  (2 points)      A:  Augustus, Tiberius, Vespasian, Titus

3.  Which of the twelve Caesars wore the "purple" for the shortest time?  (omit Julius Caesar from consideration)     A:  Otho

4.  Why is the Colosseum known as the Colosseum?
A:  Because of its proximity to the enormous statue of Nero, known as the Colossus Neronis.

5.  Tiberius was not Augustus's first choice to succeed him.  Name those Augustus preferred before he had to settle for Tiberius?  (2 points)
A:  Marcellus, Agrippa, Gaius Caesar, Lucius Caesar

6.  Who was the powerful Prefect of the Praetorian Guard under Tiberius?   A:  Sejanus

7.  Tiberius was unaware of treachery by this Prefect until he was informed of it by whom?     A:  Antonia

8.  During the Julio-Claudian Era a female was deified for the first time.  Who?      A:  Caligula's sister Drusilla

Round 4:

1.  What title was given to Nero in 51?      A:  Best is Princeps Iuventutis.  Also accepted was Consul Designatus.   (Both titles appear on coinage.)

2.  In the early years of Nero's reign, three other people were exercising power behind the throne.  Who were they?
A:  His mother, Agrippina, and later on, Burrus and Seneca.

3.  What did Vespasian have done to the Colossus Neronis?     A:  He had a radiate crown added to it, after which it was known as the Colossus Solis.

4.  The emperor Theodosius II died after falling off a horse.  What prominent Julio-Claudian (not an emperor) suffered the same fate?    A:  Drusus

5.  Who was the first Roman emperor to have been born outside of Italy?      A:  Claudius

6.  What did Caligula do that greatly upset the Jews?    A:  His image was installed in sacred places.

7.  Upon what Roman monument is depicted a triumphal procession with the booty taken from the Jewish temple at Jerusalem?     A:  The Arch of Titus

8.  During the reign of Domitian, the Ludi Saeculares were held.  Such games were supposed to be held only after the lapse of a very great interval of time.  What was the interval of time supposed to represent?         A:  The maximum length of a human lifetime.

9.  Domitian was assassinated in 96, ending the Flavian Dynasty.  The Senate decreed that his statues be destroyed, his inscriptions erased, and records of his reign obliterated.  What is the Latin expression for that kind of procedure?          A:  Damnatio Memoriae

10.  Perhaps the most iconic line of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti is  CVM  SCRIPSI  HAEC  ANNVM  AGEBAM  SEPTVAGENSVMVM  SEXTVM.  Furnish an accurate translation of that line.          A:  When I wrote this I was in my 76th year.  (Augustus was 75 when he died.)

The maximum possible was 44 points, including three bonus points for prompt submissions.

The three highest scorers were (trumpets blaring):

GAIA  CASSIA  PRIMA           42.0 points

C.  DECIUS  LATERENSIS      41.0 points

VALERIA  PAVO                      40.5 points

The eight remaining players all scored between 35.0 and 40.0 points and are listed below in alphabetical order:

C.  CLAUDIUS  BARBATUS
M.  POMPEIUS  CANINUS
Cn.  CORNELIUS  LENTULUS
M.  MARTIANIUS  LUPUS
T.  SICINIUS  LUPUS
Q.  LUTATIUS
A.  SCRIBONIUS  NASICA
Ti.  ULPIUS  PULCHER

Prizes:

The top three scorers have won Roman silver coins.

In 2013, Canada Citerior sponsored a seminar on the subject "An Introduction to Roman Coins" at Concordia University in Montreal.  One of the participating numismatists was Charles Euston, a specialist in the coinage of Gallienus.  Mr. Euston has donated some coins for this contest so I am pleased to announce that all of the players will be rewarded for their efforts with a small piece of ancient Rome.

To hold virtually any office in Nova Roma you must be a tax payer.  Thus, if you are  public servant, senator, governor, magistrate, scribe - please pay your tax.   Without an arrangement or payment beginning June 1st you could lose the position.

Has anyone heard of this game or played it?

Alea Jacta Est

“ALEA JACTA EST” (The Die is Cast) is what Caesar said as he crossed the Rubicon River when he learned that the Senate had removed him from his command. Crossing that small Italian river was equivalent to disobeying Rome’s orders and entering into open rebellion.

The great confrontation with Pompey was about to begin… One of them would become the Master of Rome, and the other would die…

Alea Jacta Est is the first historical strategy game on the PC to cover the main Roman civil wars, created by a dedicated team of experts to bring the epic battles that pitted Romans against Romans in conflicts such as those between Rome, Sertorius, and Mithridates.

With an incredible level of rich historical detail and historical accuracy, it is one of the few strategy games where the player must face the real dilemmas and challenges of the Romans during the time. Not only must you build and train armies, maneuver them and engage the enemy, but you must also maintain an economic and diplomatic balance with your neighbors.

Using the successful and famous AGE engine, Alea Jacta Est covers the whole of Europe, Northern Africa, and part of Eastern Europe, part of more than 2,800 regions, complete with cities, roads, fortifications, weather types, tribes and kingdoms of the time of the scenario. Featuring 5 campaigns from 87 BC to 197 AD, hundreds of historical leaders, units and events, Alea Jacta Est is a must-have for any grand strategy fan.

Features

  • Ancient Command System (based on the Wars in America system), allowing for a good representation of historical army command in the Roman era.
  • Quick and simple system of Construction of Units, allowing players to choose and purchase their forces as they wish (or can).
  • Decisions features, playable on the map, like wild cards assets
  • Diversified set of historical events, allowing multiple choices events and options, hereby enhancing flexibility and re-playability.
  • Different updates and other rules, in particular combat system adapted to the Ancient warfare.
  • Map: all of the Roman Empire and neighboring lands, with over 2800 different regions and seas, a lot of room for maneuvers.
  • Over a thousand of leaders and units with specific pictures.

Ave,

I just found this game....it also looks interesting - especially for those who like the Ludi.

Welcome to the Roman circus!

If you have come here it is because you wish to manage your own chariot racing team. Train your drivers and give them the finest equipment and horses. If you do this well, your chariots will provide you with both wealth and fame. but beware! Chariot races are dangerous. Accidents may occur and rival teams might try to harm your charioteers during the race. Make sure you do not grow too attached to your charioteers and always have a replacement available. Good luck!

Qvadriga is a tactical game of chariot racing in ancient Roman circuses, where you take control of a four horse chariot team. Choose your preferred upgrade combinations and prove your skills at the arena. Select the most cunning actions which your team could perform against the best drivers of the old world: shake reins, whip horses, choose lanes, hold tight while negotiating curves, avoid incoming attacks, block enemies path, lacerate and whip them until achieving victory.

Start an epic campaign from the most modest tracks of the empire corners, assemble a mighty team and build your fame through the provinces until reaching enough wealth to finally open the gates of Rome's greatest competition at the Circus Maximus, where you will be able to enter history and reach favour of gods.

Experience the full range of warfare from reconnaissance and raids to field battles and mountain blockades as you campaign across a continuous satellite-accurate map of ancient Greece. Siege and starve your enemy by cutting their supply lines or burning their crops, all the while building and protecting your own supply network to support your growing kingdom. Play as Macedonia, Athens, or Sparta in the three historical campaigns, or choose one of the 26 factions in the epic sandbox mode and forge your own empire. With dynamic new diplomacy options and greatly expanded tactics, Hegemony Gold sets the new standard for ancient warfare.

Subject: Another ROman game :)
Avete Omnes,

I just found another Roman game.

Raise massive armies, embark on epic campaigns to expand the Empire, and take control of the known world! Engage in grand-scale city building and create magnificent cities with creativity and control like never before. Intuitive controls make it easy to launch bone-crushing combat missions and manage every aspect of your thriving civilization.
After decades in exile, your family name has been all but forgotten in Rome. But, the departure of the tyrant Sulla has changed everything, and Rome stands on the brink of a new era. Sides must be chosen as Caesar and Pompey battle for control of the Republic. The stage is set for you to gain power and influence over one of the greatest civilizations in history.
Advanced Battle System
Take command of 18 different military units, including naval command, elephant cavalry, and mercenary forces. Recruit citizens of Rome, draft captured enemy forces, and pay foreign squads for their special skills. Defend and expand the Empire by land and sea with exciting RTS gameplay.
Intense Multiplayer
Online multiplayer functionality with 6 different strategy modes — play competitively or cooperatively. Create buddy lists and challenge your friends to a battle, or use the matching system and take on an unknown foe with the same skill level. Advance your career and increase your rank from praetor to consul and beyond.
Epic Campaigns
Rub shoulders with Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Cleopatra and more in a non-linear historical campaign featuring over 40 missions. Choose your own fate as you create and destroy alliances with more than 20 different historical figures. Celebrate your victories by erecting legendary monuments such as the Coliseum, Circus Maximus, the Pantheon, and more.
Complex Economy
Flow resources eliminate tedious micromanagement, giving you the freedom to create thriving cities with multi-leveled economic systems. Information overlays visualize the city economy and satisfaction of the people on every location on the map.
4X REAL-TIME STRATEGY:
ExplorE — Journey to ancient Gaul, Britannia, Egypt, and more to colonize barbarians and establish new trade routes.
Expand — Stake your claim throughout the known world in the name of Rome! Help build the empire through military conquest and economic prowess.
Exploit — Natural resources are yours for the taking as you establish farming, mining, and logging operations. Raze barbarian villages for riches, labor, and property.
ExtErminatE — Destroy all who stand in the way of Rome's glory! Defend your territories by land and sea to secure peace and prosperity for the empire.
  • Detailed citybuilding alongside rtS combat dramatically widens audience.
  • Competitively priced within the genre.
  • Extensive online multiplayer connectivity — play competitively or cooperatively.
  • Game's scale is far beyond the city of rome, allowing players to experience all areas of the roman Empire by land and sea.

Subject: Ancient History magazine fund raising
Salvete omnes,

I'm a reader of the Ancient Warfare magazine from some time now and although I'm not an expert on history I find the magazine very informative and well illustrated.

The editors are now making a fund raise to make a try run with a new magazine on all other aspects of ancient history and I thought maybe some of you would like to contribute to it so here is the link to the magazine page:

Subject: Hadrian's decision to abandon....
Avete Omnes,

I have been reading some articles and one of them specifically states that Hadrian's decision to abandon Trajian's conquests was directly related to the losses suffered during the Kitos War (115-117).  Is this commonly accepted or were there other considerations?

Thanks,

Sulla

Salvete!

Available today, free for Kindle on Amazon:

The Thunderbolt (Book One in the Carthage - Rome Series 1)

Hannibal Barca has grown up in the pearl of the Mediterranean, Carthage. The sole power of the seas, and feared upon the land with their mighty war elephants and Numidian mercenaries. He has ever known the main threat to their power, the upstart empire of Rome. Now a chain of events will set him upon a path that will march him on into history. Will the desolation of Rome consume the fire that burns within him, and at what cost?

Subject: Free Online Courses
Avete Omnes,

I have found some link that might be of interest.  These are for free online college courses on a variety of subjects, but focused on history.  Since I have been recuperating this has been helping to keep me sane since I have been very limited.  I hope you enjoy these links, descriptions and classes as much as I have been.

Respectfully,

Sulla

Subject: Great new find!
Salvete Omnes!

I just started reading this book, and so far, I am finding it extremely
interesting. It isn't free, but I considered it potentially good enough to
spend money on, and, thus far, I have been proved right. It is available on
Kindle, (where I got it) but I'm sure it is also available in paper form as
well. The title is: Carthage Must Be Destroyed, and the link to the Kindle
version is:

http://www.amazon.com/Carthage-Must-Be-Destroyed-Civilization-ebook/dp/B004I

age+must+be+destroyed

This link will also provide information on other formats, I believe.

Happy reading!

Salve Caeca!

Excellent find. Carthage Must Be Destroyed: The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Civilization is easier to read than a dry military history like The Fall of Carthage: The Punic Wars 265-146BC. It may rely more on opinion than fact to provide a different perspective from the obviously biased surviving original sources but it is interesting so far. Thanks for sharing this with us, Caeca.

Fac valeas!

Salvete!

The traditional "birthday" of Rome is April 21st.  Weather permitting, I plan to walk around much of the city starting at the Pyramid at 9:00 and ending up at the Ara Pacis.  I expect to meet some citizens for a celebratory dinner that night.  Anyone interested in joining us for the walk or the dinner should contact me at c.claudius.quadratus@...

Subject: Reminder tax season
Avete Omnes,

I wanted to remind everyone that it is still tax season.

All payments for the tax pay for the website, domain, accounting and software related charges. Also the tax payments go for the expansion of Nova Roma's presence both in the internet and in the physical world that we live in. As there are long term plans being worked on.  But without your help it will be very difficult to achieve those goals.

Tax payments are tax deductible - please consult your tax preparer for details.

If you have any questions regarding the amount, how to pay or anything, please contact me @ robert.woolwine@...
