Subject: Watchmen of Rome ...recently read
Salvete Omnes!

I recently finished a very nice historical fiction book by Alex Gough,
called Watchmen of Rome. This *is* fiction, but the author seems to have
done some fairly extensive research, so there is a sense of verisimilitude.
It deals with the lives and work of the firefighters in Rome during the time
of Tiberius ..and involves, among other things, fugitive slaves, a very
nasty new cult, espionage, sabotage, and other fun events. The story was
well written and thoroughly engaging, and the characters were nicely
developed. I found the descriptions of firefighting an law enforcement very
interesting, and the conspiracy (of course, there had to be one of those,
right?) though fairly implausible was well drawn, and within the context of
the novel, it worked nicely. I read this on my Kindle, and think it is well
worth what I spent for it.

Valete bene!
C. Maria Caeca (who would have used the Latin terminology, but since I get
all my input via audio I'm not quite sure how to spell some of the terms, so
wont upset anyone by making the attempt :).

ATS:  You haven't forgotten how to ask, have you?  ;-)  There are several of us here who know what most of us should, a little something called 'Latin.' The word for 'fireman' is 'vigil,' pronounced more or less as 'WI-gill,' (hard g).  Augustus established a group of watchmen who essentially functioned as a fire brigade, but policing and similar duties were later added to their responsibilities.  Originally the participants were slaves, but later were freedmen.  (quoth the OLD).   As an adjective, 'vigil' means 'awake,' especially when others are asleep, and at the beginning of the First Catilinarian, Cicero uses the word 'vigiliae' (a related abstract noun) to refer to the watchmen set to protect Rome against the Catilinarian conspirators.

Another word for 'fireman' is 'sparteolus,' a term found in the text we use for the spoken Latin courses we offer.

Are there any other terms you would like to have posted in Latin?

Valé(te)!

Subject: FW: Announcement of Competition 2015-2016
A. Tullia Scholastica quiritibus aliisque bonae voluntatis S.P.D.

I thought that the following announcement might be of interest to at least some of you.  The Vivarium has a good reputation, and several of our students have attended one or another of its sessions (summer or regular academic year).  At least one is expecting to enhance his Latin by attending this summer's session.

Please note that this institution has very strict rules, and that women are not allowed during the regular academic year as the Vivarium is housed in a monastery or seminary.  Women may participate during the summer session.

Along these lines, please note that we (who are unaffiliated with the Vivarium) also offer Latin courses by two different methods, traditional and assimilation.  The introductory traditional course, based largely, but not exclusively, on the Wheelock text, is open for registrations; the accelerated assimilation course is still in session, and cannot be entered, but the slower separate first and second year courses should soon be ready to accept registrations.  All students for all courses MUST have the textbook in hand before being allowed to register, and must prove that to our satisfaction.

The text for the traditional set of courses (Latin I and Latin II, separately) is the very popular and readily-found Wheelock's Latin, by Frederic Wheelock.  Either the Sixth or Seventh edition is acceptable, but the Seventh has additional aids for the student, so we recommend it. The advanced course (Latin III) in this series uses a different text by the same author.  All of the existing assimilation courses use Clement Desessard's Le Latin sans Peine, which is also available as Il Latino senza Sforzo and Latein Ohne Mühe.  We provide a translation into both English and Spanish of the text for those who for unknown reasons cannot read either French, Italian, or German.

Please note that as is the case at the Vivarium, work is involved for all of our classes; very few can learn Latin by absorption alone.  It takes effort.

Valéte!

Ave!

I just finished this part on the history of Rome podcast.

Does anyone have a link that would have every item regulated and the cost of each item in English?

I have seen pics of the stone carvings, but I would like to see what was all listed as complete as possible.

Respectfully,

I'm following this podcast too and like it a lot only I would like it to have spent more time with Greece and probably Egypt too.

He is currently at the brick of reach Rome but has been doing some remastering of old episodes and by his own words thinking how to approach the subject when there is the great History of Rome by Mike Duncan already available.

Great to know you will finally be back home.

Thanks I will have a little more days to prepare myself to another trip to the surgery table. Not that it is the surgery itself that costs, as you know better than anyone else, but the recovery.

My first podcast was Mike Duncan History of Rome and love it. I'm now following him through the revolutions and loving it too.

I'm following too this on the history of our world and one on British history but this last one is very weak and probably will stop listing to it.

I usually listen to them while driving to and from work.

My first was the history of Byzantium.  Then Mike Duncan's history of Rome.  I will be going to his revolutions next as well.  I should finish Rome by today or tomorow, I am up to Constantine and the battle of Mulvian Bridge right now.

The British history one is weak?

I found one on history of religions in the ancient Mediteranean which I will be checking out once I get some time.

ENGLISH VERSION

I. PRAETOR IN PANNONIA

I hereby acknowledge the presence of the Praetor Sextus Lucilius Tutor in my province Pannonia, and by doing so I recognize and declare him as the Ceremonial Head of Pannonia and the Highest Ranking Leader in Provincia Pannonia as far as he stations in the province.

I.A.1 With this declaration I don't interfer with any of the laws, rights and duties pertaining to the office of governor granted by the Senate to me, and I only acknowledge the fact that the Vice-President of the Nova Roman Republic, with imperium over the whole Republic is present in the province and therefore my imperium can only be second in rank after the Praetor's imperium.

I.A.2. With this declaration no rights, powers or responsibilities are given to Praetor Sextus Lucilius Tutor which aren't given to him according to the laws of Nova Roma. The only legal authority responsible to the Senate and People of Nova Roma for the administration of Pannonia remains the governor of Pannonia as appointed by the Senate. This acknowledgement of the Praetor in Pannonia as Head of the Province is only symbolical and acknowledges nothing but the Roman fact of themos maiorum that whenever a higher magistrate is present in the province, the seniority and precedence is given to the higher magistrate instead of the governor, and the governor becomes only the second in rank.

I.A.3. With this declaration I urge and encourage every governor to do the same if they have a higher magistrate (consul or praetor) present in their province. This is the Roman republican thing to do, and we should honor these most sacred offices, the consulship and praetorship, which represent the highest levels of honor in a Roman's life. I encourage governors to issue similar edicts (this one can be used as a template) to give to due respect to praetores or consules present in their province.

I.B. I further declare that in my capacity as governor of Pannonia, I will respect as my superior and (whenever I deem viable, plausible or propitious) follow the guidance and instructions of the Ceremonial Head of Pannonia and Highest Ranking Leader in Pannonia, Praetor Sextus Lucilius Tutor.

I.C. When the praetorship of Sextus Lucilius Tutor expires, the position of Ceremonial Head and Highest Ranking Leader returns to the regular governor of Pannonia.

II. QUAESTOR REGIONIS MARCOMANNIAE

I hereby appoint Quaestor Tiberius Iulius Nerva as Quaestor of Regio Marcomannia and of the Legatus pro Praetore.

II.A. His position is second in rank to the position of Proquaestor Pannoniae Spurius Porcius Gemma, but the Quaestor of Regio Marcomannia shall be administratively independent from the office of the Proquaestor of Pannonia.

II.B. In this capacity, the duty of the Regional Quaestor is to act as vicar and first, general deputy for the Legatus Pro Praetore in all and any regional businesses in Marcomannia, with supreme oversight over all regional offices.

III. LEGATUS REGIONIS MARCOMANNIAE

I hereby appoint Tiberius Iulius Nerva to the rank of Legatus Legati Pro Praetore to fulfill the following functions:

III.1. Personal Representative of the Governor in Regio Marcomannia (the area of Czechia and Slovakia);
III.2. Legatus Regionis Marcomanniae: Lieutenant-Governor assigned to Regio Marcomannia as Superior of the administration of Regio Marcomannia (the area of Czechia and Slovakia).

Subject: Possible Formation of a Sodalitas (related to Roman coinage)
Salvete!

The collection and study of ancient Roman coinage is a popular branch of numismatics.  I would like to know if there is interest in the formation of a sodalitas within Nova Roma that would be involved in that field.  Such an organization would permit ready communication between like-minded individuals, the posting of articles and notices, coin trading, cataloging, authentication, evaluation, and related activity.

If there is sufficient interest, activity may commence without delay.  Once the sodalitas is functioning with goals and organization established, official recognition would be sought under the Lex Cassia de creatione sodalitatum.

The physical headquarters of the sodalitas would be the provincial office of Canada Citerior, the address of which is SPQR, 4333 St. Catherine Street, West, Suite 420, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H4A 2R2.

Anyone interested in this prospective activity should respond to this notice.

Avete Conscript Fathers et Omnes,

This will be the last reminder of the tax period, unless something prompts an addendum.  Taxes are due by May 31st - just over  week from now.

As always, if anyone needs to make arrangements please let me know.

Any tax payment made from June 1st forward, without arrangments made in advance will need to include the late fee.  I have tried in the past to not enforce the provision but this year I am going to be more diligent.  So, please if you make arrangments and keep the arrangements we make there will be no late fees.  This is how this works.

Thank you for your time and participation in helping Nova Roma grow and prosper!

Respectfully,

Sulla

Avete Omnes,

I have seen an issue come up twice and I want to make sure everyone is on the same page.

The correct paypal address to submit a payment to Nova Roma is:  payments@....

This has been the correct address for years.

If you send a payment to any other address, other than the one I listed, Nova Roma will not receive the payment.  You will need to cancel the transaction and resend it.

When I have had to reverse transactions via paypal there were no charges to do that.

As always if you have any questions please let me know.

Respectfully,

Sulla

Subject: Moderation Edict

Ex Officio Praetorum Novae Romae:

PRAETORIAL EDICTUM ALH SLT MMDCCLXVIII AUC
MODERATION EDICT FOR THE FORUM NOVUM ROMANUM (AKA MAIN LIST OR ML)

We, A. Liburnius Hadrianus and Sex. Licinus Tutor, Praetores of Nova Roma for the year MMDCCLXVIII, in the hope of increasing the participation of the citizenry and promoting a more free and lively, yet well-ordered, setting for the gathering and interaction of those who are citizens, including probationary citizens, of Nova Roma within our principal forum, the Forum Novum Romanum (also known as The Main List or the ML - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nova-Roma)  promulgate the following edict for civil conduct within the Forum Novum Romanum:

I. The Main List (ML) is open to citizens only. Everyone, regardless of citizenship status, is encouraged to join and participate in the Forum Hospitum (FH), which can be found in Yahoo Groups.

II. Citizens who are 16 years of age or older may join and participate in the ML. The ML is not open to anyone under the age of 16 years.

III. Citizens are reminded that the ML is a moderated list, and all posts sent to the ML must conform to the requirements and restrictions of the Yahoo Terms of Service (ToS), available in summary form here: http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html .

IV. Citizens are reminded that the ML is not classified as an adult group and should govern their choice of language accordingly to comply with the restrictions imposed by the Yahoo ToS. Additionally citizens should be aware that posts that may be considered defamatory, libelous or otherwise injurious could give rise to a cause of action either within Nova Roma under any current relevant leges, or macronationally in courts of competent jurisdiction and should therefore govern themselves accordingly.

V. Prohibited, disruptive or offensive conduct/language, or a combination thereof, as defined by either Yahoo ToS or the Praetores, will be dealt with by warnings and/or imposed moderation. The Praetores are not bound by precedent in deciding these matters, which will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

VI. Serious consideration will be taken of any apology or explanation in defense of a behavior for which a penalty may be or has been considered by the Praetura with the understanding that, ultimately, the decision of the Praetores, subject to all legal forms of redress and veto within the Res Publica, will be considered final.

VII. All posts will be expected to be signed by the poster's Roman name. Latin openings and closings are suggested and encouraged. More information about the use of Latin in email is given here:http://www.novaroma.org/nr/Latin_for_e-mail .

VIII. The business language of this mailing list is English, and its ceremonial language is Latin, but there is no restriction on the use of other languages. However, official communications from state authorities and announcements that concern the entire citizenry must be in, or translated to, English.

IX. If there is any suspicion or complaint regarding messages written in any language other than English, the moderators may either request an English translation of the suspicious message or have it translated by their scribes or by volunteer NR interpreters.

X. Any message, in any language, found in default of either the Yahoo ToS or this Praetorian Edict, will be treated as violating items IV and V of this Edict and the sender may become subject to stricter moderation if his message contained insults that he hoped to veil by the use of a language other than English..

XI. This edict shall take effect immediately.

Given by our hands a.d. III Kalendas Iunias, MMDCCLXVIII AUC, in the Consulship of M. Pompeius Caninus without Colleague.
